Stage 2

Stage 2 is the first mountain stage, so in addition to a KoM leader we’ll get a first clear picture of the GC as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0017.jpg

We have 6 riders in the break and one of them will also be the first KoM leader after the stage: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Bernard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Bourgoyne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tlt.png Glivar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Seboka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Brenner and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Skjerping.
The leaders are already in the first climb of the day (Isseki; cat. 1; 15.4 km at 5.7 %).
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Sinkeldam also tried his luck, but he was never able to connect to the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Bourgoyne soon pays the price for being the wrong kind of rider for this kind of stage and is dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Seboka (16) wins the sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Bernard (12) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Skjerping (10). The other two were dropped in the final part of the climb and are already a minute behind. With the next KoM climb already in sight it’s probable they won’t make it back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Seboka (22) led the whole climb and just rode pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Bernard (16) of his wheel in the end. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Skjerping was dropped right away and is back in the peloton which is 2’36 behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Seboka (32) arrives at the top of the next climb solo. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Bernard (24) made it just over the line before being caught by the peloton which is also down to 53 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Seboka had to rider the descent and the valley all on his own, but as soon as the next climb (a cat. 1 from the look of it, but uncategorized as it seems) begins pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Fortunato joins him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Seboka is dropped even before the categorized second part of the climb (Ait ou Azik; cat. 1; 6.6 km at 12.1 %) begins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Fortunato wins the KoM sprint but has to repeat this in all the following ones to match the classification lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0025.jpg

The Italian is caught in the next cat. 3 climb after a fruitless attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Smith.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Egger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Petelin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Carcueva attacked over the top of this climb one by one and try to get away in the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0027.jpg

They don’t really get a gap, but at least the latter two are able to follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Smith’ next attack for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0028.jpg

40 riders are back together at the last KoM sprint, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tlt.png Munoz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Kuss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Leemreize attack over the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0029.jpg

Those four are brought back in the descent. With 13 km to go we have 32 riders in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0030.jpg

The finale begins with 1.6 km to go when the leaders arrive at the last bump to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0031.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Smith is once again the one to make the first move. He leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Berhane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Barguil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Meintjes under the red kite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0032.jpg

Those four are still in the lead with 600 m to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Vasyliv and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Godoy were the only other riders to follow before a gap opened.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0033.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Barguil takes the lead with 400 m to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Meintjes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Godoy seem to be the only ones able to still contest him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0034.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Barguil wins the stage! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Meintjes is next while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Smith just holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Godoy for 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Berhane beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Vasyliv for 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0035.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Lopez wins the sprint of the peloton for 7th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Sosa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tlt.png Primozic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Gaspar complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0036.jpg

In the end no gap was awarded at the front, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Barguil adds the GC lead to his stage win nonetheless.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0037.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Seboka is the first KoM leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0038.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Leemreize leads the U25 classification by quite some margin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Maroc/PCM0039.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Team Popo4Ever p/b Morshynska is the leading team.
