The Race
The organizer’s favourites show no real surprises.
It took nearly two of the 13 laps today until the peloton allowed some riders to get away. The three leaders at the moment are Fjellheim, Reddish and Klahan. Loland is some seconds behind, Singh and Varotsos are also within range of getting to the front. Schleck and Grand also try to bridge to the break, but they still have quite some way to go. We’ll see who’ll get to the front in the end.
Apart from Schleck all of those riders came together, they were also joined by Sheffield. Orins also tries to get to the front, but he’s still 1’25 behind. The peloton trails by another 2’44.
We’re pretty much halfway through the race and the chasers never made it to the front. The 8 leaders have a gap of 3’10 to an already reduced peloton, but no important riders were dropped yet.
With 45 km to go the break is still in front. But a group of 7 attacked from the peloton and is only 1’32 behind them. In this group are Gaze, Ringheim, Carr, Zhupa, Kulppi, Van Moer and Touze. 58’’ behind them is another group of 23 with most of the favourites. Van Lerberghe and Richardson are the main names who missed this group.
With 20 km to go all of the chasing groups are back together and are only 48’’ behind the break. Nareklishvili and Kolev have been dropped though.
In the penultimate climb the break is over. It seems like a big group is together in the climb, but there will be splits over the top.
In the result a group of 25 riders is in front with 6 km to go. Schäppi and Insausti are the bigger names who were dropped in addition to those riders mentioned earlier.
Roosen attacked in the flat and got a small gap. With 2.5 km to go Zepuntke himself does the chasing.
As a result a group of 9 enters the final km together: Roosen, Hvideberg, Zepuntke, Teggart, Moulingui, Orue, Marzuki, Van Lerberghe and Arissol.
With 300 m to go the sprint is on its way. Teggart leads in front of Hvideberg and Moulingui. The next row consists of Roosen, Marzuki and Van Lerberghe. Zepuntke and Orue seem to be out of it while Arissol has already fallen back to the first chasing group.
But in the end it’s Marzuki who adds another win to his C2 season! Teggart in 2nd makes this another big day for the PCT teams. Hvideberg in 3rd is the best CT rider. Then it’s Van Lerberghe and Moulingui in 4th and 5th.
Behind them it’s Zepuntke, two more PCT guys with Schäppi and Miltiadis, Centrone and Muhindo in 6th to 10th.
Congratulations to Marzuki who continues to take the CT cobbles classics from the CT teams!
