Volta a Portugal
Stage 5
165.4km Hilly Mountain Stage

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/01.jpg

Valter leads the list of likely leaders for what could be the first major GC stage of the Volta a Portugal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/02.jpg

It’s a battle for the breakaway to form by the first sprint point but they do. Hocevar takes the points ahead of Van den Broek and then Kench who has worked very hard to get the group going. Attacks still behind but not many getting away. Vabo and Van den Berg sit directly between the peloton and breakaway, 37 seconds each direction but slowly making progress to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/03.jpg

A very hectic next 15km leaves us with a situation of: Hocevar, Kench, Vabo and Van den Berg up front. Van den Broek punctures out to a 2nd group which now only has 15 seconds over the peloton and appears full contained by the overhead. Alongside him there is Sunderland, Neilands, Wilksch, and Tikhonin but this group only has 15 seconds over the peloton. They’re quickly swallowed up before the next attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/04.jpg

Daniel and Piccolo are the next to breakaway as Kench is struggling after being dropped. Noia and Sunderland wait a minute and then attack as well. Kench is passed by the first pair while the 2nd pair isn’t allowed away from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/05.jpg

With 123km to go, the breakaway is now finally formed(?). Daniel and Piccolo make it across, Kench is taken back by the full group and now it’s a group of 5 up front. The gap overall is still only 2:45 which makes things very complicated for this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/06.jpg

The first KOM of the day is a 3rd category climb and the easiest of the stage. No one has points so it shouldn’t matter much, but there’s still a battle. Hocevar wants it most while Vabo is trying to protect his teammate’s jersey. Piccolo manages the remainder.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/07.jpg

The 2nd climb is still 3rd categorized even with a much longer ascent. They’ve motored this climb in the break with Piccolo taking the points over Hocevar and then Van den Berg. However, the peloton is flying with the break down to 90 seconds. Aker-MOT and Fastned are those controlling things at this point. 83km to go. Xero providing some assistance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/08.jpg

Hocevar is trying to make the most of this breakaway by winning the next sprint point with 77km to go. Daniel is the only other one even sprinting for it. The gap has extended just a tad to 2:05, but the chase is clearly still on behind. Van den Berg officially takes 3rd at the sprint.

With 67km to go, Van den Berg is dropped from the breakaway. The hills are just too much for him today and he slowly heads back toward the peloton. The rest of the breakaway has pushed the gap to 2:30 again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/09.jpg

The final sprint point of the day comes with 32km to go and then it’s mostly climbing for the next 20km. The break is down to 1:20 and this should be their last thing to win. Hocevar as before is the most active with Daniel also showing interest. Piccolo scores the remaining with Vabo just trying to hold onto the break.

Behind, Jura and Kraftmark are the teams joining the chase alongside those from earlier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/10.jpg

27km to go and on the 3rd category climb, the breakaway is taken back into the peloton, mostly from the work of green jersey wearer Andersen on the climb. He continues to stomp out a high pace. The climb goes full to Aker-MOT domestiques and Davies of Tryg-Eni taking 1st. The 1st category climb await 7.3km at 5%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/11.jpg

With Aker-MOT crushing the pace for most of the climb, sprinters were beginning to fall back, but no major damage was being done, so the pace slows at 2.8km to go in the climb. Just as it slows, Yates bursts through for an attack matched only by Schlegel. Van Poucke next trying to follow and does break away himself before Aker-MOT gets back on to pace again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/12.jpg

Yates crests the top in 1st with Van Poucke 2nd but struggling as Schlegel takes 3rd. Velasco will take 4th ahead of Galta, Donovan and Bol for the remainder of the points. Still, the group is 146 strong with just a small plateau and a descent to the finish, although an attack could definitely get away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/13.jpg

Schmid is the first to make an attempt as the descent begins and grabs Teuns for the ride down the final 8.4km. Van Poucke, Gaudu, Valter and Schlegel are the most attentive at the front of the peloton. Officially they’re all together at 5km to go with just no gap able to be created.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/14.jpg

Pure descent until 2km to go leaves this to positioning. Schmid is on the front still with Teuns. Pidcock 3rd, Valter 4th before we turn to sprinters. Steimle, Van der Kooij, Banaszek, Coutinho are all at the front as well with Rodenberg just popping back into picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/15.jpg

1.1km to go! Schmid is still sprinting but Pidcock looks strong. Valter doing well too, with the next row featuring the sprinters. Rodenberg is moving fast while Banaszek, Steimle and Van der Kooij all look ready to strike as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/16.jpg

400m to go and the sprint is fully on. Pidcock now 1st but Schmid isn’t giving up. Valter now flying as well with Banaszek and Rodenberg also strong. Coutinho in 6th with Phinney and Rumac ready to break through if a gap arises. The win should come from these 8.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/17.jpg

The quick turn stops any remaining moves with Schmid taking the win! Pidcock 2nd! Valter holds onto 3rd for a great result. Banaszek and Rodenberg are surely surprised finishers as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/18.jpg

Coutinho 6th, Phinney 7th and Rumac 8th ahead of Teuns and Schlegel to round out the top 10!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/S5/19.jpg

Another strong result from Pidcock jumps him into 1st place by 10 seconds! Rodenberg will still hold onto green for now.
