Iban Mayo?!?!
sakai5
Correct me if i am wrong. But in TdF 2003 Iban Mayo won the stage in the Alpes d'Huez?
I don't understand why according to youtube movies Iban Mayo was always in the wheel of Lance Armstrong and now he seems he is no longer a climber.

Did he lost anything? Isn't he a very good climber and a big contender or in that Tour(2003) he was surprisingly powerful?

(I don't know either what was his classification in the end of that Tour)Wink

it's natural that some riders fade through time. some can't handle the pressure. I'm not saying it's the case, but nobody expected anything from him then so he had no pressure. not the case since then.

maybe he had an injury that he never fully recovered from.

maybe he was doing something then that he isn't anymore.

there are a lot of reasons, but none of us can say for sure...

anyway, he finished that Tour 6th, one place behind Zubeldia

He didnt fit in well with Euskaltel I dont think, he needed change and is more rejuvenated at Saunier Duval, he won a mountain stage in the Giro after all.

transitional stage, actually. he did well. but nothing compared to what he did pre-2005.

True, but at least it was something. A sign that he still has some talent.

let's see what he does in this Tour. my personal bet is that he'll be quite anonymous

A bit like Beloki I guess... After the crash, he never recovered.. But has Mayo been in a major crash like Beloki?

TDF 2004. cobbled stage.

but I doubt that had any influence.

He actually crashed today, but he Millar, and De la Fuente finished safely in the front group. He's Saunier's leader, hopefully he will perform as their leader, unlike Simoni last year who got beat by Millar overall.

Iban Mayo started to stink when doping tests got better. Plain and simple.

that is extremely cynical and frankly, an uncalled for accusation.

also: I agree.

This phenomenon should have a name. I offer up two names: Mayo theory or the Rumsas theory.

the Mayo-Rumsas theorem it becomes then. should we add Aitor González and Stefano Garzelli?

lance never sucked. he went through to the end.

Isidro Nozal, anyone?

"oh look, I almost won the Vuelta on my first season around...."

then the UCI significantly upped out-of-competition testing...

and that was that.

I think he'll do better than the last years. Maybe a break away win on a mountain stage or something.
