The much delayed Olympic Games of Tokyo is arriving into the MG world!

Running in PCM18 (the game engine for the 2020 season), and with rider's stats as they were for the 2021 season, finally we will see who has what it takes to win the gold medals on offer, and follow on from previous MG Olympic Champions.

Courses

The Olympics Road Race course is a mountainous affair which features three sets of circuits:
- The big climb up the Mt Fuji Sanroku ascent, featuring twice earlier in the race
- The Fuji Speedway Circuit is visited during the race, and returned to for the finish
- Mikuni Pass, also featuring twice, where decisive moves could well be made

The time trial course is based around Matsuomyo, taking on a circuit that has featured in one of the top long running MG stage races, the Tour of Japan. Not so familiar for time trial efforts, but with three ascents up the Shimohisakata climb, they know they are going to have to work hard to do well.

Other Courses

But that's not all. Two brand new formats will also feature in these Olympics, offering opportunities for more riders to not only compete, but challenge for victory.

The Keirin. Get set for many big sprints in the Velodrome, featuring all of the world's best sprinters.

Mountain Biking! It's cobbled, but with some very steep climbing to contend with as well. Whose skills will most translate to a successful ride here?

Schedule

First, there will be an Opening Ceremony to reveal who is taking part, with more information of the format of the events. But some clue on that can be seen in the planned schedule for the rest of the event. There's going to be a lot more to do it than just 4 single races!

Oh my, this is amazing!

Silvio definitely among the top favorites in the RR if things go to plan, after already being strong enough to be in the break of the day in the last Olympics.

Too bad Zepuntke's mtn training won't be included, as else it should have been an easy win in the MTB race. Maybe Keizer has an amazing day in the RR. Even in the TT he should be a factor, if Phinney has a big off day. Maybe Manninen has a superb day in the Keirin event. Any medal would be celebrated at LPH obviously. Looking forward to the races.

Opening Ceremony

Every contracted rider for the 2021 season was eligible to ride the Olympics, although of course not all can be included.

Every single country is included however!

It is also the case that not just all 2021 teams, but all 2022 teams, do all have at least one rider competing in at least one event!

Road Race and Time Trial lineups were chosen (about 11 months ago!) with support from tsmoha, Mre, hillis and Fabianski.

Country jerseys were compiled from forum sources, with many countries getting a MG touch with a former national champions jersey. Thanks to hillis, the_hoyle and bikex who also helped with the creation of a couple of new jerseys from scratch, or removed some team branding from a former NC shirt.

Format

How will all these countries fit? Well, that's where the multiple rounds come in.

Road

Nations with single riders will compete in the preliminary round for both Road Races and Time Trials. The top 4 finishers will then qualify for Round 1.

Round 1 will feature 4 heats, and the first six countries to have a rider finish, witll qualify for the final.

Keirin

Round 1 of the Keirin will see 10 heats of 6 riders. It's winner takes all here.

Round 2 sees the 10 victors join 50 more competitors. 10 more heats, but this time the top 3 will qualify.

The third round will have 5 heats of 6 riders. The Top 3 all qualify for the semi finals, and there will then be three winner takes all repechages to give the others a final chance.

Three semi finals of 6 riders will see the top 2 in each qualify for the final.

Mountain Biking

80 riders will compete in four heats for a similar qualification process to mke the final.

76 riders are pre-qualified, while 4 more will qualify through the invitiational race.

The invitational race consists of 24 nations, 1 rider each - all nations who don't otherwise have a rider included in the first 76.

For all mountain bike and keirin races, while races may see multiple riders per country, they all will be racing individually.

The Mongolian squad got a good round for the heats in the TT. Erdenebat should be able to compete for a top six I think.

In the road race it'll be a bit tougher. Should be a very exciting and interesting edition of the Olympic games! Cant wait!
