Race Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/pthc_fgp.jpg

A shiny brand new race greets us and the riders in Gabon. 19 sectors, mostly flat with some small inclines thrown in await the peloton, with the best cobbles specialists hoping to write their name in the history books as the first ever winner of this race.

We're all excited to see how this turns out. So let's get the action underway.

A slow start for the opening few kilometers as the riders took in the scenery of new destination.

Action soon got underway with nine riders breaking away just before the first cobbled sector. They are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Martinez
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Rowe
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pons

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Verwilst

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%201.jpg

We catch up with the peloton as they come past the fifth cobbled sector. All the riders are together following a puncture to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Trakhov. He has made his way back to the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%202.jpg

Oh hang on! That sector did cause splits at the back. 46 riders have been dropped but all the big names are safe.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%203.jpg

Five riders from the early break are caught with 153 kilometers still to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pons, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Martins Sandoval and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Verwilst remain at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%204.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Feng attacks and catches the break with 141 kilometers to go, to make them five strong.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%205.jpg

Talk about bad luck and timing! Just as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Feng catches the break, he suffers a puncture on the cobbles and has to do it all over again. He would make it back again.

122 kilometers left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Grieg have things under control at the front of the peloton. They trail by 2'53". They're about to finish off the seventh sector.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%206.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydock, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Bolivar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Roosen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Manokov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Grand don't want to stick around with the pack and go on the attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%207.jpg

A few kilometers later, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png van der Hoorn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Cominelli have the same idea.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%208.jpg

The attacks keep coming as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Jansen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Havik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Broers and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Yechezkel leave the peloton behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%209.jpg

And we're not done yet! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Nooytens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Van Baarle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Richardson also get away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2010.jpg

All these riders would make it to the break for it to become a 20 man strong breakaway.

We see the pack now with 75 kilometers to go and 155 riders strong. They trail by 1'45". We're on the tenth sector.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2011.jpg

Five riders - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Broers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Yechezkel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Nooytens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Richardson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Van Baarle, are dropped from the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2013.jpg

The five riders are caught with 65 kilometers remaining.

50 kilometers to go for the break as they are about to start the eleventh sector. Their lead is down to 1'28".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2014.jpg

Jumping ahead another 10 kilometers, the leaders hold their gap at 1'25".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Martins Sandoval attacks 2 kilometers later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Verwilst is dropped, with lapped rider Pereyra next to him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Verwilst is caught by the pack soon after.

Up ahead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Martins Sandoval is also caught by the break.

The peloton completes the sixteenth sector with 113 riders. The gap has gone up to 2'9". 24 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Van der Hoorn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Cominelli attack the break with 19 kilometers left. The break's lead has gone up further to 2'30".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2019.jpg

15 km. Two cobbled sectors to go. The peloton can't seem to close the gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2020.jpg

The break come back together a couple of kilometers later. The chase has increased their lead to over 3 minutes over the pack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2021.jpg

Vanbilsen thinks enough is enough and attacks to maybe try to bridge the gap on his own. 12 kilometers remain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Vanbilsen would be caught 2 kilometers later, without making much inroads into the break.

7 kilometers to go for the surviving 14 man break. Their lead stands at 3'24".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Vanbilsen launches another attack, this time with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Pedersen in tow. The gap has come down slightly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2024.jpg

The break comes past the last cobbled sector. Just 3 kilometers remain for them and surely they can't be caught now. Their lead is still over 3 minutes!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2025.jpg

Back in the pack, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Summerhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fab.png Van den Berg attack as the earlier move is reeled in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2026.jpg

19 riders have got a gap in the peloton, as they try to chase down the latest attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Sulimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Lampaert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Vanspeybrouck are not in the lead group, among others.

The peloton is made up of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Senechal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Wisniowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Trentin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Zhupa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Palyi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Gerts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Spengler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Bohli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Pedersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Molingui, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Debesay, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Kristoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Vanbilsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Fenn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Orue, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Ngandamba.

1 kilometer to go for the break where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Van der Hoorn is leading them out. Bad time to catch some lapped riders though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Manokov has taken the lead with half a kilometer left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Havik is coming through fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2029.jpg

The situation changes again with 300 meters to go:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Havik
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Manokov pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Jansen pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pons
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Martins Sandoval pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Rowe
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Van der Hoorn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Feng pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Roosen pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydonck

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2030.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Havik extends his lead as we move into the final 100 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pons and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Jansen are gaining on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Manokov for 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2031.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Rowe is catching both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Jansen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Manokov with 50 meters left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pons is up into 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2032.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Havik holds on for the win! The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Vesuvio rider gets his unwanted moment being lapped at the most (im)perfect time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2033.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pons is 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Rowe comes past to claim 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Jansen too comes past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Manokov for 4th, while the latter has to settle for 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Martins Sandoval is 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2034.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Van der Hoorn takes 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2035.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydonck makes it 7-8 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Aegon. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Roosen is 9th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2036.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios completes the Top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Feng, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Grand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Bolivar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fcj.png Cominelli compleye the order for the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2037.jpg

2 kilometers to go for the pack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Summerhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fab.png Van den Berg hold a 20 second lead over the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2038.jpg

21 riders are in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2039.jpg

the next group has 28 riders including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Vanspeybrouck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Sulimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Lampaert.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2040.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fab.png Van den Berg rides away from his more illustrious rival with 500 meters left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2041.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fab.png Van den Berg takes 15th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2042.jpg

Just a 3 second lead for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Summerhill over the chasing group 200 meters to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2043.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Summerhill is swamped before the line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Pedersen takes 16th, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Kristoff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Trentin. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Summerhill is 19th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Vanbilsen completes the Top 20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2044.jpg

Today's winner - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Yoeri Havik.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PTHC/Franceville/FC%2045.jpg

That was...different! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Yoeri Havik becomes the unlikely first name to go up on the honours board of the Franceville Classique. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pons and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Rowe complete the podium. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Jansen saves pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Grieg's race to some extent with a 4th place finish. They'll probably still be dissatisfied having had two huge contenders for this race. The teams of the other favourites will be scratching their heads for a while as to how they let the break take this one, especially after having come so close to catching them.
