Race Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/profiles/pthc_nor.jpg

The Tour of Norway has been a constant feature on the Man Game calendar since 2013 when Matthias Frank took the overall win without actually winning any of the (then) eight stages. The number of stages were reduced to four in 2015 before it became a five stage race in 2016, and that's how it has stayed ever since.

The race profile has two stages at the start which should favour a sprint finish. Stage 1 is not simple though with undulations that run deep into the stage and ends less than a dozen kilometers before the finish. Stage 2 is more routine however. This is followed by a nearly 30 kilometer time-trial which could prove to be the decider, as was the case for three of the last four years! Only in 2018 did Edvald Boasson Hagen put his stamp on the hills and turned around a deficit from the TT to go on to win the GC.

Talking about past winners, Boasson Hagen is the only one that starts this time. Can he become the first two-time winner of this race? The competition will be fierce as a host of strong punchers and time-triallists have turned up to try their luck in this race. Let's take a look at them in the next section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen is among the favourites, but he's not near the top, as his TT skills leave some room to lose time.

Instead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Taylor Phinney starts this race as the bookmakers' favourite to take out the win. The bulk of his advantage should be built in the TT, but he's no slouch on the hills, and should be able to hold on to the pack unless there's some never before seen carnage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Izagirre have become familiar foes in races like this, with their combination of puncher and TT skills. Both riders come into this race having done quite well so far this season. They'll be hoping to continue in the same vein.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Wurtz is the first 'pure' time-trialist on the list and he's been in red-hot form for the past season and half. The Grieg man will be hoping the hills don't lead to too much selection though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Keizer is built in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney's image, with climbing being his forte along with time-trialining, and not quite his puncher skills.

The first pure puncher on the list is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png De Bie, who'll really be hoping to turn his season around to justify the investment made by his team in the past two seasons. He's similar to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen and probably a little better when it comes to skills required to succeed in this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kangert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Navardauskas are not the strongest puncher of TT rider, but their combination of stats put them among the possible Top 10 contenders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brandle is yet another rider who'll look to overcome weaker hill climbing abilities with a strong TT and competitve mountain climbing skills.

A lot of the TT favoured riders who can hold their own on the hills make the outsiders' list for this race. An exception to this is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski, who is the best climber and puncher in this list. The likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Stake Laengen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Vangstad have done well previously in this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Phinney is the best TT rider in the race with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Wurtz his closest competitor.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Keizer is expected to use the TT to stake a claim in the GC but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Vlatos would need to do something special on the hills given his puncher capabilities. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Sutterlin is similar to the latter.

There's quite a few challengers for the Top 5 places among the TT specialists.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png De Bie and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen are the best punchers in the field and the latter will be looking for a repeat of the 2018 race on the final two stages. The former needs to up his game for the sake of himself and his team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge wil look to continue his good form while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric will be looking for a turnaround, given he's not been able to make an impact yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Buchmann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Izagirre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Koretzky are strong punchers in their own right and all of them have been having a good season so far. The hill stages will be especially important for three of the four of them, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Izagirre can also use his TT skills to gain an advantage.

Quite a strong sprinter field is here to challenge on the first two stages. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard should top favourite with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand not too far behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Appollonio is as strong a leadout as they come in support of the latter.

The undulations could favour pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Kristoff or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Kump on Stage 1 while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Howard can be expected to remain as consistent as he always is.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Haller and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Boeckmans have done well so far this season, and will want to continue the same.

We have a strong team here, but whether that will bring any points is anyones guess.

Vlatos for the TT, Coquard with Nizzolo for the sprint and Koretzky for the Hill. I doubt we will be able to get anything from the GC though so we need to be active.

Nepomnyachsniy could potentially do a decent GC result here, but I'm not holding my breath. Our best bet at scoring some points is probably Boeckmans, although getting past Coquard and Ahlstrand is unlikely.

I'd like to see us try something from the breakaway for a change.

Thanks for the preview Abhi Smile

Hard to predict whether we'll score here. We have some riders that might do well in GC if the gaps in the hills are neither too big nor too small.

This is our home race, which also explains why Kwiatkowski is here. Don't believe in any GC result due to the TT and this being PCM 18, but I hope we can fight for at least one stage win, the Queen stage on day 4. The final day could be too easy for Kwiatkowski and the other puncheurs, but it would be good if he can mix it for the win there too. I suspect this will turn out to be bad value for five race days, but it was too tempting to send him here, after all we're racing in Norway!

Regarding Vangstad, we need big luck with his daily form in the TT, and then he might be just strong enough to hold on through the hills to bring us a good GC result, but that can't be expected, as he shouldn't really be strong enough Pfft

Aquarius97
Novak broughy us decent GC results in the last couple of seasons, and current Dunbar being a similar rider to him, though stronger on hills, hopefully gives us another good GC result. The hilly stages are much easier than Scandinavia, so i shouldn't worry about a total colapse like it happened in the final stage there.

Other than that, i hope we are active in breakaways, Rodriguez and Mosca can be KoM contenders if they go into the attack

Surely higher expectations for me here, with Howard and Bobridge as possible threats for the single stages. Howard needs to bounce back from a disappointing performance though. Bobridge has a surprisingly good year and the profiles here look like the MO deficit may not hurt too much (at least here's hoping it won't). Opposing to Jack Haig, Bobridge somehow disappoints in stage race TTs, but maybe he can turn things around here.

So. Don't disappoint me here. The setting couldn't be much better after all.

Bikex
This is a race where Brändle usually does very well in. Hope he can perform again and successfully wrap up this already successful month for us.
For the victory it's hard to imagine Phinney not taking it.
Should've sent Gidich here as well as he would also be a threat for the top 10 and an auto white jersey win. Don't know why I didn't.
Thanks for the preview Abhishek!

Yeah we went all in here with maybe our strongest line-up all season. Sounds crazy, but it's actually true. We need a win and some more good results.

I'm a bit offended that Kangert is listed as a tier 1 favorite, even Cosnefroy makes the outsiders list, and Stüssi isn't even mentioned by the preview...we'll prove you wrong. Pfft

I mean, I get the worry about 73 hill, but I'm optimistic stage 4 will require climbing legs, and then stage 5 is mostly about positioning, meaning the GC up until that point is going to be decisive.

That means, if Stüssi has a good TT and keeps up in stage 4, he could be in a position to get preferential treatment at the front of the peloton and survive an uneventful stage 5 for a Top 10-15 overall.
We'll see.

Furthermore, Vasyliv is here to reinforce our lineup and play backup to Stüssi if MO gets relevant, Bevin is always a good allrounder to have for these stage races, and Niu tends to surprise on this level.
For the first two stages, we bring Aregger, who I fear might be just one point away from actually participating in sprints. If we do get lucky though and he's in the mix, I like his chances for a surprise result as many 78 sprinters have achieved before this season.

And for the TT, we bring Sütterlin who should be able to fight for a Top 5, but is barely above a whole bunch of TTers who will sneak by if he's not having good legs. Ganna is probably one season away from performing in a startlist like this, but he also can overperform at times.

So all in all, we're bringing an underdog for every stage and the GC, and hopefully at least one of them strikes to make this race worthwhile.
I mean, we had to come here anyway, with this being the Hallstatt and Deutschland Tour band.

tastasol
We have a strong team here in our home race. Hopefully a podium or two is possible and to have a couple of riders in the top 20 in GC.

Should be a win for Phinney 100/100 times.

I have close to 0 expectations regarding our results here, jsut hoping to score a few points ngl! Thanks for the preview!

Tough one for Howard, but a fair result in the Top 3, I guess Wink nice opening stage for Bennelong with Bobridge avoiding an early drama like what Hagen did to his manager/team..

Coquard cruising to the victory was quite impressive. Congrats!

SotD
Great win. Nice to see the pre-stage favorite win for once (in a sprint that is). I must admit I was a bit worried when Nizzolo was dropped (Farantakis as the other leadout was even further behind I see).

But then it began to look very very interesting with all my key riders (including Koretzky, Vlatos, Zoidl and Coquard) being in the very elite first group. Too bad really that no more gaps were awarded as that would have played into our hands very nicely with an actual benefit in terms of a possible GC result. We need whatever "luck"/"fortune" we can get from these splits to allow Koretzky to maybe land a top 10-15 result and Zoidl to stay in the game aswell... The latter have performed hopelessly all season, so I don't have too many hopes for him. I wonder if his low RES is a problem. For many of my other low RES riders it hasn't been though.

5th is not bad by Boeckmans, but not great either. Hopefully he can go one or two better tomorrow. I'm happy Nepomnyachsniy found himself in the front group by the end, he needs all the help he can get. I would've liked to see Penko in the front group instead of Poljanec for the outside chance for some U25 points.

Coquard with a beastly performance, congrats SotD Smile

A strong support team for De Bie here, not the most ideal race for him obviously with the amount of TT kilometers against the likes of Bobridge or Phinney but hopefully still a decent top5-10 and stage results in the hilly stages.

Just read the report of stage 1, wow...in especially Boasson Hagen has already lost a lot and surely can attack the hill stages now, which might change the race. Also Buchmann.

Luckily De Bie was attentive or just once in this A1 group there.

Except for my 2 loanies, all riders in the peloton which is good as some might score decent depth points here. Stuyven already showing him a bit here. Nothing big point wise but nice to see the team active.

Surprised to see those puncheurs lose time, especially EBH on home soil. Very worried when Kwiatkowski and Vangstad were reported in A1, but luckily they made it back. Having those two and Yzeiraj in the peloton was good. Hopefully we can join breakaways too, as we don't have any sprinter, nor GC favourite here. That really should make it possible to join the early attacks.

Good to have already the U25 lead to add a few extra points than expected

What a weird stage?! At least the podium looked regular in the end.

Aregger getting dropped first is a joke, we don't have to discuss that.
Seems like I totally fucked up his planning.

Stüssi and Vasyliv made the selection, which on the one hand isn't promising regarding team depth and minor points scoring, but it's definitely reassuring to see them attentive and it likely gifted us some GC positions on day 1 already with good puncheurs inexplicably out the back.
