Liechtenstein hosts the ninth edition of the PT mountain classic and we have an all-star field that has turned up this year. Before we get to the contenders though, let's look back at the history of this race. Two-time and defending champion Taaramae is not here this time and neither is 2018 champion Spilak. Three-time champion Andy Schleck (consecutively in 2014-16) is also not here while 2013 winner Cunego has retired. We have to go back all the way to the inaugural edition in 2012 whose winner Madrazo is here and top favourite this time around!
The course consists of a circuit with a difficult but not too long climb which will be tackled a total of thirteen and a quarter times by the peloton over this 240+ kilometer course. On the final ascent, they will veer off halfway up the climb to a taller section, taking them higher up into the clouds with near 14% slopes. The finish of this race comes at the summit of this humongous climb. The length of the race is another factor which is sure to have some effect, so stamina will become an important factor. No two ways about it though, if you can't climb mountains, you're not meant for this race!
| MON | STA | RES | ACC | Madrazo | 85 | 81 | 80 | 72 | Lecuisinier | 85 | 78 | 80 | 74 | Phinney | 85 | 77 | 74 | 75 | Herklotz | 84 | 79 | 80 | 76 | Dombrowski | 84 | 80 | 78 | 75 | Morton | 84 | 79 | 78 | 67 | Pluchkin | 84 | 77 | 77 | 73 | Alarcon | 84 | 71 | 74 | 78 | Sicard | 82 | 80 | 79 | 70 | Quintana | 82 | 77 | 76 | 66 |
As already mentioned Madrazo starts as top favourite for this race, along with Lecuisinier. The former has a stronger setup accompanying him in this race, with the likes of Formolo, Vysna and Konrad here to help, while the latter has Barta as the strong domestique.
Phinney is the other rider who is an equally strong climber, but his support stats are a little weaker than the duo mentioned above. He does however possess a stronger kick and if it comes down to a small selection sprinting to the line, he could have the edge. Roglic and Novak are a strong pair of helpers sent along to help their leader for this race.
Herklotz, Dombrowski, Morton, Pluchkin and Alarcon are equally good when it comes to climbing. Herklotz and Dombrowski boast some of best support stats among the top contenders and this will surely help in a race like this. Morton too is no slouch, but his acceleration could hold him back in the final lead-up to the line. Pluchkin represents wildcard team Popo4Ever, and despite age having an effect, he is still one of the top contenders in a race like this. His support stats are a bit weaker than the top contenders, but he still should a Top 5 candidate at the minimum. He also has perhaps the strongest set of domestiques among all the top contenders. Alarcon's energy stats are not ideal for this race, and could well hold him back to a certain extent, but he has the best finishing kick among all of the favourites.
Sicard and Quintana are somewhat weaker on the steep slopes than the rest of the favourites. The former's support stats are good though and he has developed a habit of putting in surprising results against seemingly stronger climbers. Quintana looks more likely to be a Top 10 contender in this race.
| MON | STA | RES | ACC | Olivier | 81 | 76 | 80 | 71 | Galta | 81 | 78 | 79 | 66 | Hirt | 81 | 77 | 79 | 76 | Keizer | 81 | 75 | 79 | 73 | Henao Montoya | 81 | 74 | 78 | 72 | Berhane | 81 | 77 | 74 | 68 | Meintjes | 80 | 77 | 76 | 69 | Roglic | 80 | 75 | 76 | 74 | Schelling | 80 | 75 | 76 | 70 | Padun | 80 | 72 | 74 | 75 |
A casual glance at the outsiders' list shows you just how strong the field is, and how close the sub-top contenders really are to each other!
Olivier carries the hopes of his team on his shoulders, and so does Galta, in the absence of Taaramae. In fact, all but two riders on the outsiders list - Roglic and Padun, are team leaders, and will look to perform better than where this preview puts them! Henao Montoya is another leader riding on a wildcard ticket.

Wow, that startlist
I'd have loved seeing all of these in the Giro, but for obvious reasons they aren't
Looking forward to the report, will surely be a fun race with all those top climbers in!

Come on Angel! Looking at the competition I don't even expect a win. But please deliver a podium.

Insane startlist but had to be expected once we saw the Giro startlist.
Personally, i never liked this race and decided to send most of our climbers to the Giro. So it's just tvetcov as sole somewhat capable rider and he is far away from being mentioned in the preview - would love if he gets into the break himself to maybe survive to a higher result than he might otherwise achieve. The aim is to get as many riders to finish as possible.

Strong startlist. I don't really expect anything from my team, but would be nice to see some of them at some point in the race. Looking forward to the report! |

Herklotz should win if he's on a decent day.
But I'm rooting for Isostar with Phinney, Roglic and Novak

Well I have null expectations for this given my lineup obviously. Considering this clashes with the Giro, where Spilak is scoring his heart out thanks to a superb support cast, it just didn't make sense to send my best climbers here

Looking at how we perform in the Giro, we have to win this one. I suspect it will be another massive blow though.

Missed this discussion thread before.
Stat wise a top10 was hard to reach, finishing just outside as best of the rest as 11th is very good and pretty much the maximum I guess.
So it`s good to see him doing quite well here after he didn`t perform to his best in some of his races this season.
Thanks for the report and congrats SotD. Lecuisinier on fire really, while Phinney did show some weakness here. |

I agree. Right? :-p

Congrats! Should make up for your Giro worries

Not enough. Strange to see the "weaker" riders mixing it up here. Congrats to SotD and the other surprises on the podium!

Congrast SotD. New Lecuisinier looks strong.
Madrazo was once again pathetic. Losing more than three minutes and getting beat by Berhane and Sicard.

Finally a win in "one of those" races, which kicks his PPrD right up to where it belongs before his final race of the season.
William Barta with a good result getting more than minimum points too, and just one rider not finishing the race too is better than expected.
A real horrorshow of a season Madrazo is having so far.
Berhane with a pretty amazing result! Nice to see ISA performing this well.
After the pathetic show in the Giro this certainly is a nice change of events. If Lecuisinier can win the Vuelta it can become a good season, but if he can't then it will likely be mediocre (5-10th).

A nothing race for us, as expected. With our limited set of climbers in the Giro, I'm not surprised that we only managed two finishers here.
Good fight for the win! Congrats on a big one, SotD!

Disappointing.
Dombrowski and Morton on the podium means Herklotz could've won this.
He wasn't right at the front for that entire finishing climb, but that wasn't why he got dropped, we're just not having much luck with race day form this season yet.
Stüssi and Vasyliv around where they should slot in, sadly just outside the >10 points range, and Helme also sadly losing out on 5 extra points on s.t.
At least Herklotz is no Madrazo, but I expect the latter to bounce back in the TdF because it would be just too perfect for us if he didn't, and we all know that violates several rules of thermodynamics.
Congrats SotD! I hope this alleviates some of the pain you experienced throughout the season, and is a good sign for the Vuelta.
And thank you Abhi for your report.

Totally missed the preview yesterday! A pleasant surprise to not worry about the startlist (even though one could have guessed it even without the preview) and read the report first Morton did once again well here, which is obviously crucial after our drop off the PT Top 10 recently. Power adds a Top-30. Which ain't spectacular, I know.
Congrats SotD and thanks for the report!

Missed the preview as well.
Was hoping for a Top 10, but with all the big names here 12th seems about right. Quintana maybe could have been a bit stronger to finish alongside Berhane and get a Top 10, but I guess he ran out of energy. Congrats to SotD
Thanks for the report.
