Tour de Slovenie - Stage 4
Tour de Slovenie

Stage 4: Flat ITT, 52.9km

Welcome to stage 4 of this Tour de Slovenie - and it's one where we don't really know what to expect from. We have a 52.9km individual time trial today, which lets us assume that the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Fl├╝gel will struggle today. But as you can see in the profile, the parcours is a steady up and down, as we have four hills (and descents). We do have three intermediate checkpoints, too, all of which are within or just after one of these uphill sections. Is it hilly enough to still leave the puncheurs some chances? Or will the pure ITT specialists dominate? Will it take a good mix of strengths to win today? Time will tell!

Let's look at the stats and positions of some stage favorites, as well as the current GC Top 20.

18h42'50pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier64728071

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier definitely won't like the "TT" stats of the riders sitting behind him, as up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Figueiredo on P11, all of them would probably beat him in a pan-flat ITT. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu has got the best position of the stage favorites, and is likely to fight for the leader's jersey against pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda. Or can pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Shikai benefit from his better resistance and create a surprise? Will we even see former winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland repeating his 2015 victory? And how far back will the best puncheurs be after this stage? Let's find out!

But just before starting the race, let's look at how the bookies consider to be the stage favorites. They seem to completely ignore the hills, as the name the expected riders as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel on top, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Dempster and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Sterobo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich should have a good shot at the Top 10 as well (well, the latter will definitely aim for more). But now, let's jump into the race, as already the third racer will be an interesting one...

And indeed, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin crushes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pszczolarski's time by 49", setting a first mark of 19'03 at the first checkpoint. The Pole actually is a decent TTer as well - so either he has a very bad day, or we'll likely see huge time gaps - really huge ones.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Li follows soon after, with just 5" back, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthart loses 8". Everything still possible for these two, with almost 40km to go.

The same holds for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Sterobo, who posts the 4th time with 14" back.

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin sets quite a mark on split number 2 with 35'22, being already 1'33 ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pszczolarski halfway to the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Li has already overtaken teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Galdoune and posts the second time at the 2nd checkpoint - 10" behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthart is again 3rd, 16" back.

Now, we have one of the bookies' 1-star-favorites reaching the first split time - and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich takes the lead! The clock stops at 18'56, meaning he's 7" faster than...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin, who's already at the third intermediate time - 51'33. He has just overtaken pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pszczolarski, who still posts the 2nd time - 2'26 back. Just to say: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin is rated with 79 for time trials, whereas pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pszczolarski has 74 - but is much better on the flat. This is actually an incredible time difference!

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Li already passes his next teammate in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Banaszek, and reaches the 3rd time check still in 2nd position - 18" behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthart still 3rd, + 28". Can these two riders claim back some time on the final section? It still seems possible with more than 10km to go!

This picture showing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Sterobo arriving at the second split (4th with 26" back) makes clear how enormous the time gaps will be today, as he closes in on his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Gavenda starting two positions ahead of him, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Gavenda himself has already passed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Albanese - meaning that at the halfway stage, the Dane has already caught the rider starting three positions ahead!

Another favorite in French ITT champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Robert passes the first checkpoint being 15" back - P5 at the moment. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Christian does not much worse, being 7th with a 22" deficit.

And here comes the third Frenchman among the top ITT riders - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet posts the 2nd time at the first split, only 4" behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich - who at the same time posts the new best time at the second checkpoint, 35'07, which is 14" faster than ...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin, who has just missed out on being the first rider to finish the race. Still, his final time 1h09'17 definitely is a mark that will be hard to beat!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Sterobo seems to be out of contention for the lead at the third split time, as he's 33" back. This is still P4 for him, though.

Brasilian ITT champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Nascimento passes the line at the first checkpoint - but 9th with 25" back is surely not what he had hoped for. Let's just have a quick look at the Top 10 at this point:

1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich 18'56
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet + 4"
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin + 6"
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Li + 11"
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthart + 14"
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Robert + 15"
7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Sterobo + 21"
8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Christian + 22"
9. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Nascimento + 25"
10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Van Zandbeek + 43"

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Robert passes the 2nd split time: 4th with a 27" gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Li then reaches the finish line - without any surprise, he's still 2nd. However, he lost as much time on this final section as on the three first sections together, making it a 36" deficit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthart keeps his 10" deficit on the Chinese, finishing 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Christian still has a good pace, posting the 7th time at checkpoint 2, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Golovash takes the same position on the first split time - 16" back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich is still travelling at high-speed, as he closes in on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Christodoulos when reaching the third split time. He has posted the best time at splits 1 and 2 - and he does the same at split 3! 51'13, having gained another 5" on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin for a total of 19"!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet, 2nd at the first split, posts again the 2nd time at the second checkpoint. 7" now for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Sterobo was just 5" behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthart at the last checkpoint - and he was able to overtake the Dutchman! But not only, as he finishes 2nd, losing 21" on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin - meaning he has gained back 12" on the final section!

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Nascimento continues losing time, as he's alread 49" back at the second split. P9 for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Hussein is the next outsider reaching the first split time - and he does OK: 8th place being 19" back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Robert then reaches the third checkpoint 4th with 39" back. The French NC shirt doesn't give him wings, but it's still a solid performance until now. 13km to go for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Christian approaches the third split time as well - currently 7th with 55" back.

And it's still the same as we had some minutes ago, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Golovash posts the 7th time as well - this time at the second time check. + 33" for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet continues losing a few seconds - this time it was just two of them. So he's still 2nd at the third checkpoint - can he gain back these 9"?

Or do we already have today's winner here? All we know is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich had a great race and posts the new best time, as the clock stops at 1h09'00! However, he lost 3" on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin on this final section - and the Frenchman wasn't the fastest, either...

With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Cheung, we then have another "77 TTer" reaching the first split. His 34" deficit is rather disappointing, though, and it's just P12 for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Nascimento still hasn't found the next gear, either, as he's alread 1'14 back at the third checkpoint - P9.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Hussein is just 6" faster than the Brasilian at the second split, making it P10 with 43" back.

Now it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Robert crossing the finish line - but he was unable to gain any seconds back. He even lost some more and posts the 4th time, 45" back. He may have hoped for more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Christian, on the other hand, had a great last section, gaining back 4" on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich and posting the 5th time! 51" is his deficit, and he'll surely not be unhappy about it!

We finally get a picture of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Golovash, as he reaches the third split. Whereas he had posted the 7th time at splits 1 and 2, he has now gained a position and is currently 6th, + 47".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet lost some time on each section - including the final one. Still, it's the 2nd time with just 13" on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich, but he sure would have preferred getting the best time. Well, it wasn't to be today.

And it won't be for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Cheung and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Archbold, either, the first being 1'09 back at the second split (P12), the latter having already lost the race at the first split (13th, + 36").

It wasn't pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Nascimento's best day, either, as he posts the slowest time so far of the pre-stage favorites/outsiders. 9th place for him, + 1'24.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Hussein is a tad faster than the Brasilian so far, being 58" back at the 3rd checkpoint. P10 for him.

In the meantime, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Golovash finishes his decent race and gets the 6th time, 48" back. He just lost one second on the final section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Hussein had a great final section and almost beats the Ukranian! He clocks at the same time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Christian, but beats the Brit for 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou then is the first decent hybrid rider - OK in TTs, OK on the hills - and he gets the 12th time at the first checkpoint, + 28". So it seems to be mostly pure TT strength that counts, as he wasn't able to beat many stronger TTers.

As we've quite much reached the half-time of this time trial, let's have a look at the current Top 10 final times:
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich 1h09'00
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet + 13"
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin + 16"
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Sterobo + 38"
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Robert + 45"
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Golovash + 48"
7. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Hussein + 51"
8. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Christian + 51"
9. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Li + 52"
10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthart + 1'02

10 riders, 10 teams. And none of the riders having reached at least checkpoint 1 currently seem to be able to claim a place in this list.

However, this changes as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant quickly approaches the end of the first section: 8th place, 19" behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich. A solid start for the Brit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou, the only other rider currently on course and maybe having a shot at the Top 10, still isn't far behind at checkpoint 3: 11th with a deficit of 1'11. He'd have to gain back 9" to match the time for P10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Archbold meanwhile finishes what must be quite a disappointing race for him; only 17th, and with a huge time gap of 2'17.

Another good TTer reaches the first checkpoint - and he does quite well: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev stops the clock at 19'12, which is 14" behind the leader. 5th place for him, making it a great start!

But it's even a better start for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge, as we have a new best time after the first section: 18'54, which is 2" faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich! With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet completing the leading trio at this point, 3/4 of the stage's top favorites have passed, and they are all ahead. Expectations must be high for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel, then!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant reaches the second checkpoint, and he's still travelling fast: 8th with a 35" gap.

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou actually gets the virtual Top 10! What a final section by the Byelorussian, who was 10" faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich on these final kilometers! 10th place, + 1'01.

The fireworks continue at checkpoint one, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Balloni posts a Top 10 time as well! He currently is 9th with 16" back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev loses some time on the second section, and now is 6th, + 27".

Well, actually it's 29" now, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge keeps his two-second advantage at the halfway point - we're set for a great duel!

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant crosses the line at the third checkpoint - and he is now 6th, + 43". Just five seconds faster, and he could be 4th!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Balloni is even faster at the second split, as he posts the 8th time, exactly 30" back.

Now it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev posting the best time behind the 3 uncontested leaders - 4th with a 37" gap, and "best of the rest" so far, which means after 3/4 sections.

Then, we don't have to wait for long until the new "best of the best" reaches the third checkpoint, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge stops the clock at 51'06 - he has extended his lead to 7" by now! Does he have enough energy left to preserve his advantage?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant definitely paced himself very well, riding 6" faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Sch├Ądlich on the last section and claiming the 4th place, just one tiny second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Sterobo!

Meanwhile, we get pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Pok├Ąl├Ą's first intermediate time - and it's OK-ish. He's 15th, having lost already 23".

One of his teammates follows directly behind, and is 4" faster. Only 4", we have to say, as it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel, one of the stage's top favorites! Very disappointing starting section for the German, who is only 11th!

It's a much better day for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Balloni, who continues his great ride and even gets the 7th time at the third split, 45" back!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev continues his great ride, gaining back 9" on the final section and posting the 4th time, 28" behind the current leader!

OK, we now have to say: behind the former leader, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge extends his advantage to 13" and posts a final time of 1h08'47! Can anyone still keep the Aussie from winning this stage?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel probably won't, as he even loses a spot and is just 12th at the second split, 37" back. What a bummer!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Balloni is on the final meters - and he gets the 6th time, edging out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant by a mere second! 49" back he is, and that's definitely a good performance!

Which unfortunately can't be said of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel, who's definitely not singing in the rain today! He drops to 14th and has already lost more than a minute! What did pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Valio have for breakfast today?

Things aren't really better for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Dempster, either, as he's already 22" back after part one, getting him only the 15th place at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Koren following two positions behind him does two seconds better, claiming 12th at the first checkpoint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Pok├Ąl├Ą then finishes his race on P15 with 1'11 back, which is probably OK for him - and he was exactly 20" faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel, who loses another 4 positions and is currently 18th! What was wrong with him today???

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Dempster (16th, + 44") and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Koren (13th, + 40") are riding +/- at the same pace - which should be quite OK for one and a bit disappointing for the other.

Whereas pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Dempster's race is showing kind of a pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel-like trend, losing time and positions (18th, + 1'14), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Koren has gained a spot and is now 12th with 56" back. 13km to go for them.

Meanwhile, we're getting to the Top 20, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Affonso is the first one of them reaching the first split: 40th with a 49" gap. He's followed by:
25. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Barbio + 35"
97. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens + 2'08
136. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Bratashcuk + 3'35

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Dempster then reaches the finish line, and he will not want to see his result. We'll tell you anyway: 22nd with a 1'45 gap! What was that?

And what a final section was this? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Koren gains 8 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge, making him jump up 6 positions - he finishes 6th with 48" back! Which makes it 1-3-6 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png cycleYorkshire - what a fantastic (temporary) team result!

And we're getting some more times at the first checkpoint:
110. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras + 2'22
114. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry + 2'28
70. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Feng + 1'18
81. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Houle + 1'38
118. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Fl├╝gel + 2'30
29. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Figueiredo + 40"
69. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Chiarello + 1'16
59. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Costa + 1'04

Of all these, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Figueiredo is surely the positive surprise, whereas pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Costa is really disappointing. But the race is still long. However, we won't really focus on these riders.

We'll rather focus on the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre, who has a solid start claiming P12, 20" back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Nepomnyachsniy on the other hand will rather go in the "disappointing" category - 26th with already 34" lost. He has the same ITT rating as the Spaniard, but definitely wasn't on the same level on these first kilometers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland is only slightly faster, losing 30" on P24.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Shikai is in the same region as well, as he just misses out on the Top 20 - 21st with a 26" gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu was one of the pre-race top favorites for the leader's jersey after this stage - and he has a decent start, matching pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre's time for 12th. But he should actually be faster...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda is almost as fast as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu, as he loses just 2 seconds! Remember, the South American just has a 9" margin on the Belgian - these two should battle for the leader's jersey!

A jersey that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Mraouni will definitely not take today, as he's already 1'46 back - 95th place. This gap wasn't really expected.

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier already knows he won't be able to keep the jersey - and very probably not win it back tomorrow, either, as he loses already 2'28. 126th place for him.

Meanwhile, the fight among those who might take it from his shoulders continues on the second section. At its end, we have the following times:
13. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre + 40"
26. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Nepomnyachsniy + 1'07
25. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland + 1'00
22. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Shikai + 51"
13. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu + 39"
21. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda + 50"

At this point, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu is the new virtual leader, as he has passed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda by 2 seconds! Let's see the virtual GC at this point:

1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu + 0"
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda + 2"
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Shikai + 24"
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland + 35"
5. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre + 44"
6. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Nepomnyachsniy + 1'01

None of these times will however worry pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge in the hot seat - unlikely that anyone gains back the accumulated deficit of the first half of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Barbio is the first of the Top 20 riders posting a decent time: 22nd with 1'34 back. Given today's time gaps, he could even jump into the Top 10 with this performance! Something which pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Affonso, coming in 2'29 late, will probably miss out on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre loses 14 more seconds, but gains two positions by the third checkpoint - 11th, + 54".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Nepomnyachsniy is constantly losing time, too - now he's at 1'33 and definitiely out of the "Race for Yellow" (which is green here).

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens finally reaches the finish line - he loses almost 7 minutes and will be looking forward to tomorrow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland crosses the line at the third split as well, and he's only slightly faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Nepomnyachsniy: 24th, + 1'25, meaning pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre has passed him now in the GC by 2".

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland's teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Shikai does better: 17th, + 1'04, meaning he currently is our virtual leader at this point, 21" ahead of the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre!

But this doesn't last for long, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu posts a time of 52'05, only 59" back, extending his lead on the Chinese to 17".

An exhausted pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras then crosses the finish line, almost 8 minutes back. The white jersey will change shoulders as well.

He was almost overtaken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Feng, starting two positions behind him. He finishes currently 70th, + 4'08. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Bratashcuk (17th GC) arrives only now, 11'26 back!

And the fight for the leader's jersey will only be decided on the last kilometers, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda loses only 6" on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu! Having gained back 5" on the Belgian in the third section, he now again leads the virtual GC, but by just 3"!

In the meantime, we get pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry's final time - 111th, + 7'55. Followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Houle, 84th with a 5'28 deficit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Figueiredo does much better - 25th with 1'44 back, and he takes the virtual GC lead ahead of his teammates pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Barbio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov. As only 10 riders are left - and many of them with no good times at all - he'll surely be within the Top 10 by tonight.

And that's already safe now, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Chiarello is 3'53 back and will lose some positions. Just as his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Fl├╝gel, losing exactly 8 minutes.

But now, we have a new virtual GC leader! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre rides the final section 14" faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge, and with a 40" deficit is currently 5th in this stage! Could this even be enough to overtake all the others?

Well, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Costa surely is part of the riders who didn't have their best day today - 3'31 back, currently 63rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Nepomnyachsniy had a decent last section, too, riding 7" faster than the stage leader. He finishes 1'26 back, currently 22nd, and 2nd in the virtual GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland is unable to beat pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre for the virtual lead, too, as he is just slightly faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Nepomnyachsniy with 1'21 back, 12" short of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre's overall leading time.

A leading time that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Shikai beats easily, as he was even 20" faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge on the final kilometers! 44" back means currently P7, and 27" ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre overall!

And now we're waiting for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu. Was the Belgian able to pull off such a great final section as well? He was 12" ahead of the Chinese at the beginning of the stage, meaning he must match a time of 1h09'43 for the lead... and comes in at 1h09'48! A disappointing result for him, as with 1'01 on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge he even misses out on today's Top 10!

Here comes the final competitor for the leader's jersey - and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda makes it! He even gets an absoultely amazing stage Top 10, as he finishes 9th with only 49" back! The Argentine is our new race leader!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Mraouni arrives a lot later, as he loses 5'50 to finish outside today's Top 100.

But that's still less bad than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier's time - 120th with 7'47 back. And that's it, all riders have finished the race.

And here is today's big winner - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Luke Durbridge! The Australian wins ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Lucas Sch├Ądlich and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Emilien Viennet - double podium for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png cycleYorkshire!

And if that wasn't strong enough already, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Kristjan Koren finishes on P8 behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Hugues Mottin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Ion Izagirre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Mikhail Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Chen Shikai. The new GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Eduardo Sepulveda and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Alfredo Balloni complete the Top 10.

Here are the next positions:
11. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant
12. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Sterobo
13. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Robert
14. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu
15. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Golovash
16. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Domagalski
17. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Hussein
18. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Christian
19. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Li
20. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png De Luna

As announced repeatedly before, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Eduardo Sepulveda is the new race leader - and he's got great chances of staying up there! He leads 16" ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Shikai and 21" ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu, who are both clearly weaker puncheurs.

However, on 4th position is lurking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre, one of the top puncheurs. 43" is a handicap he could catch up, but he'll need a way better performance than on stage 2, where he arrived side by side with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland is probably not strong enough on the hills to improve his position, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Nepomnyachsniy could still get a good result. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov as the next great puncheur is already 2'33 back, and all others of them are way more than 3 minutes behind. It will be interesting to see though if someone will try a long ranging attack - which could really hurt some of the current Top 10 riders! Let's find out tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the points jersey remains on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier's shoulders (why?), and we don't have any changes in the KoM standings either (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Hermans leading).

We do have a change in the U25 standings, though, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Jose Fernandes takes the lead. Finally, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png ISA - Hexacta take the lead in the team standings with their good ITT performance.
