Tour of Southland - Stage 5

Last stage in Southland and despite some weird actions, the GC is rather fix. Though with lots of small gaps here and there or even s.t. todays stage position might be important or someone grabbing a bonus second here or there.

Stage wise it`s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero`s to lose as so far he had a day off and one podium but no win as best sprinter on paper.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Cavendish as most complete sprinter did win both stages and could be named top favourite due to this. He is the leader in the point competition and should be able to keep it no matter what.

Then several riders, who had some solid results but not the speed of those two. But surely they all will try to find that perfect position to sprint from.

7 riders in the break and maybe some KoM attack?
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Onodera
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Zekavica
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Mendes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Daspuntsag (KoM`s 2nd, 7pts)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xer.png Ait El Abdia
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Afonso
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xbr.png Molano (KoM`s 3rd, 3 pts)

It`s a total of 10 points to give today and this means Daspuntsag is the only one to beat the 15pts of Boonratanathanakorn, who is not in the break!

And the first Cat.4 already goes to Daspuntsag. He is up to 12 points now and even a 2nd at the next could give him the shared lead.
And it`s not like the others didn`t challenge him, they simply went too late or not strong enough.
Al Abdia and Mendes following next over the line grabbing the first KoM points this way.

Not good news for Spar as Daspuntsag also wins the next and this way the KoM ranking! El Abdia again 2nd, moving him up to 3rd as Molano did get no points! Mendes again the last point moving him to 5th shared with Major. Molano will end 4th.

Carrefour earlier, Kraftwerk mainly later did the chasing and with 4km to go they almost have caught the group and it might be another chaotic sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Nechita, 26th in the GC had a puncture and will lose time today.

Daspuntsag as last is caught in the 3km range and hte sprint behind doesn`t look that chaotic actually. Kraftwerk with the strongest train and Fablok a bit behind while Carrefour is just as bad in setting up a train as in the early sprint stages. Main problem might indeed be Coppel in the race lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cfe.png Lo Cicero

So while it all looks good for Cavendish (who is still in the "yellow" jersey as apparently it`s that colour for the point competition very similarly to Coppel`s yellow jersey for the GC), Guardini is a bit behind his train and 2-3 sprinters in between.
And then there`s Carrefour. 5 leadout riders in the mix with only two being in a row and Lo Cicero like 10 positions behind as 7th Carrefour rider only as Coppel and another is also ahead! That`s how you screw up a sprint really.

It looked better for KRaftwerk early on. Now with Kreder going out with 1,2km to go and Willwohl taking over with Cavendish behind, they have lost some positions.

Drapac on the left going fast while on the right Stepniak has to go for himself with Guardini too far behind and behind him Brus and Wippert have a great leadout just like Tewelde.

Carsi, Stauff or Itami also in the mix behind Cavendish and Meyer behind Drapac on the left.

600m and Drapac is past Cavendish, head to head with Brus and Wippert on the other side.

Stepniak though still in the lead, which we also have seen on the previous 2 sprinter stages.

Drapac can`t go faster and now blocking Cavendish, who would have enough room on the side but is not really moving there and Itami is soon to take this open room from him.

And also Stepniak with the same struggle as before. Far too early in the wind and Guardini blocked behind.

Instead it`s now Wippert taking the lead as Brus also struggles.

Behind Carsi in the slipstream.

But no one able to pass Wippert and Rothaus on fire. Behind him Carsi takes 2nd, but was too late to attack him for the win.

Cavendish, who finally moved over past Drapac in 3rd and taking another solid result but not the third win though. Still the point competition.

Stauff 4th ahead of Drapac and Itami with Serebriakov having another top10 and just had this one stage off.

Lo Cicero as 21st with his 2nd day off though and all 3 leadour riders finished better than him, which shows the potential, they had.

Coppel though the deserved leader. 2 time trial win, which led to the GC win over Zmorka and Durbridge.

Only notable change I see is Reus as new 11th swapping spots with van Rensburg.
