An action-packed month of racing, let's get right into it.

Race Day #6-9 at Tour de Yorkshire
May 3-6, 2018
Back in the saddle for my first race on home soil.

Stage 1:

Spoiler
i.imgur.com/Ux0Vxf6.jpg

Summary: A sprint finish won by top dog Fernando Gaviria.

i.imgur.com/RUi0LlO.jpg

Result: 87th - I got free rein to join the morning breakaway on my big day. I wasn't going to pass up this rare opportunity to get my face in front of the field. I attacked from the gun and rode up front until I was dropped on the second KoM climb.

Memorable experience, even though I finished 7'24" behind the peloton.

Spoiler

Summary: Two for two for Fernando Gaviria.

Result: 84th - A recovery day, I stayed out of trouble and fetched some water bottles for the team. Can't be the hero every stage.

Stage 3:

Spoiler
i.imgur.com/tHlhoS7.jpg

Summary: A crash halfway through the stage takes down 66 out of the 93 cyclists in the field, myself and the yellow jersey included. It was a long day playing catch up and only the best made it back to the front. Lilian Calmejane took the yellow jersey with the stage win while Gaviria still managed to come back and finish fourth.

Result: 72nd - I never made it back to the front and finished 5'15" down. But, at least I didn't re-injury myself. Now I got a pretty colorful bruise on my other leg. Just what Canvey Island coach Nicky Forster wanted to see when I arrived for our football match later in the evening. And yet... somehow I got extremely lucky and our game got postponed due to weather. Pushed back to May 8th.

Spoiler
i.imgur.com/ezHQLaS.jpg

Summary: Crazy close finish with Tim Merlier beating out Bram Welten and Marc Sarreau. The little bump in the final 5kms created a chaotic sprint with no sprint trains. It was everyone for themselves.

i.imgur.com/DPsmKIH.jpg

Result: 21st - I tested my luck in the mad dash and didn't fairly too bad. I beat my teammate Ian Bibby (24th). Although, Bibby finished 5th in the GC and I took 84th after my failed breakaway on Stage 1 and crash on Stage 3.

Race Day #10-12 at CCC Tour - Grody Piastowskie
May 11-13, 2018
Hills, hills and more hills.

Stage 1:

Spoiler
i.imgur.com/CWcY8uT.jpg

Summary: Home soil advantage for Lukasz Owsian, as he outlasts everyone to win it in a select bunch sprint.

i.imgur.com/HwhmXNr.jpg

Result: 8th - Co-captains Ian Bibby and I keep our cool and get to the sprint at the end. I managed to beat Bibby (9th) to the line. The Top 20 riders all finished on the same time.

Stage 2:

i.imgur.com/F2Gb1je.jpg

Spoiler
i.imgur.com/zEZDTZb.jpg

Summary: Most Aggressive Rider of the Day: Marcus Diamond. Following orders to create havoc for Ian Bibby, I attacked on the final climb in pursuit of the remaining breakaway riders.

The favourites didn't like that and pulled me back on the downhill. But, they had no interest in putting in the work to catch the breakaway.

So, I went again.

i.imgur.com/6xCY2z0.jpg

A gap opened with 3kms to go.

i.imgur.com/t8c6oge.jpg

And would you like at that, the breakaway was in sight coming to the 1km to go banner. A little effort goes a long ways.

Could I actually win my first stage? Or even get the yellow jersey?

i.imgur.com/vQNYlit.jpg

Nope the breakaway cyclists had saved their energy for the final sprint.

Result: 4th - It might be a weak field, but I'm proud of this result. Nobody wanted to make the big move to risk dropping in the GC. I went for it. The race organizers screwed me over though, giving me and the breakaway the same time as the charging peloton behind us.

There was clearly a gap, but whatever. Bibby sprinted to 7th. I've moved up to 4th in GC, 10 seconds off the lead.

Stage 3:

Spoiler
i.imgur.com/pjklqXF.jpg

Summary: With the breakaway brought back, I was going to diesel my way up the final two climbs and see who in the peloton could follow.

i.imgur.com/6zwd9vB.jpg

I had successful kept everything together over the final climb and that's when Janez Brajkovic made his move. I followed with Lukasz Owsian on my wheel.

i.imgur.com/Y7Igoh7.jpg

We stopped Brajkovic, but that just handed the win to Youcef Reguigui in the sprint. The victory gave Reguigui the overall win as well.

Result: 4th - Another fourth. I think my tactics were OK. Who knows what would have happened if I decided to attack instead. I'm happy to come out of this tour with a 5th in GC, plus Bibby took 7th overall and JLT Condor won best team.

Spoiler
i.imgur.com/X1jHt9E.jpg

Summary: Every second counted as the gap between first to last was 37 seconds. The profile doesn't do the route justice, it was fairly steep.

Result: 52nd - First time I have rode a prologue like that. I'll chalk this one up as a learning experience. 22 seconds back on the leader.

Summary: Turning onto the prologue climb to finish Stage 2, a sprint up the narrow roads would ensue. Blocking was at its finest.

i.imgur.com/uyyUr8d.jpg

Result: 3rd - Using my big frame, I tried to take up the whole road. I was the second wheel at the start of the climb and just barely lost a spot to finish on the podium. My best finish ever. Yet, so close to that first win.

Result: 8rd - A five-way fight for the win and I had to watch from the second row. I just don't have that top speed to keep up with these guys. I finished 30th in the GC because of my average prologue on Day 1. Eighth in the points and youth classifications.

Monthly Review

The final month of the season. What a journey it has been. Let's finish off strong.

Match Day #43 at Mildenhall (13-18-11)
May 8, 2018
Game was pushed back due to weather, the whole league was watching.

Spoiler
Canvey Island 3, Mildenhall 3

i.imgur.com/O1aZlf1.jpg

Summary: Doesn't get crazier than that. Down 3-0 in 76th minute and down to 10 men after a red card in the 12th minute, we mounted an insane comeback.

Star striker George Sykes one-timed a free kick whipped in by Sam Collins, centerback Jerrome Sobers powered in a header off another free kick from Collins (from about the same spot) and 16-year-old Terrance Johnson scored his first goal with the club five minutes into stoppage time — a counter-attack off a failed corner where Ryan Charles chipped off to Johnson on a two-on-one break for a back post header.

This was the definition of never give up. A well deserved point.

Rating: 6.6 - Meh... But, it sure was fun to be a part of this and rushing the field from the bench when my substitute in the 89th minute scored the game-tying goal.

Player of Game: Tom Debenham, Mildenhall (7.8)

I had to miss Match Day #44 against Romford (14-20-9) to race the CCC Tour - Grody Piastowskie, but it was the news that came the day prior that shook the team to it's core.

Due to finances, President John Batch announce the team had let the contracts of league-leading goal scorer George Sykes and winger Ryan Charles run out and they were let go on a free transfer with three games left in the season.

The team was devastated. These were good players... Nobody's job was safe.

George Sykes: Big George, 23, arrived on the scene with a hat trick in our first game of the season, and he just kept scoring. In 111 appearance with club from 2014-18, Sykes scored 50 goals. He had 23 goals this season, tied for most in the league with Haringey's Helmut Ari. He had the third best average rating in the league (7.24) as well. It was no surprised that teams from around the league flocked to his inbox upon hearing the news.

Ryan Charles: The creative winger had the third-most goals on the team (10) and the most assists (12). The Charles cross to the head of Sykes was a common occurrence. It was a breakaway season for the 25-year-old. He will surely find a new home quickly as well.

The only good news was the boys somehow picked themselves up to beat Romford by the minimum, 1-0, on a 46th minute by Sam Collins.

Match Day #45 vs. Potters Bar (8-23-13)
May 19, 2018
My final match of the season against a relegation fighting team.

Spoiler
Canvey Island 2, Potters Bar 0

i.imgur.com/AmK6KQY.jpg

Summary: Complete domination. Should have been more than 2-0. Maybe we don't need George Sykes and Ryan Charles?

Rating: 7.4 - Nearly everybody on the team had a good day. But, shame I couldn't get on the score sheet again. I'll finish the season with just one wonder goal and one assist, plus five yellow cards. Average season rating of 6.84. Not great.

Player of Game: George Craddock, Canvey Island FC (8.2)

The final match of the season, Match Day #46, pitted Canvey Islands against Aveley (20-15-10). Two mid-table teams. A win and some help could move us up all the way to sixth in the standings.

Instead, Aveley broke hearts. A 83rd minute goal by Nathan Koranteng on a ball not cleared in the box ended the season on a sour note. A 1-0 defeat.

Calendar

League Standings (Complete)

i.imgur.com/Ok1cRnX.jpg

Eighth, could have been sixth. But, after our start, a decent turnaround. We had the second-most goals in the league, just didn't have the defense to back it up.

Maldon & Toptree and Barking head up, Bowers & Pitsea, Waltham Abbey and Norwich United heading down.

End of the season, so I get to sit back and relax a little. No training ground.

What's Next

Contract Talks

(Option 1) Re-sign: Marcus Diamond sat down with head coach Nicky Forster and was told the team wanted to re-sign him for next season... But, couldn't provide weekly compensation. Bonus of € 100 per goal and € 15 per appearance was offered.

(Option 2) Join George Sykes: Teammates help teammates, George Sykes is in the process of signing with Enfield Town in the Isthmian League Premier Division (7th tier in English football, one step above Canvey Islands) and recommend Marcus Diamond to the coaches. Diamond was offered € 75 per appearance to join a team he knows nothing about. But, it's only an hour and a half away from Canvey Island and closer to London.

(Option 3) Join Ryan Charles: Not only did George Sykes want to lure Marcus Diamond away, Ryan Charles had the same idea. Charles is staying in the Isthmian League First Division North to sign with Witham. He is getting a nice contract and they offered Marcus a good deal as well: € 260 per month. Witham is only 43 minutes up the road.

(Option 4) Walk: Marcus Diamond could also just let his contract run out and see if he can impress scouts at some of the development camps over the summer. If you want to make it big, then you got to take a risk.

Although the financial terms are better, I do not see the benefit of joining an unknown and weaker team, that finished 19th, while Canvey Island underperformed. Furthermore, Canvey Island played a lot better under Coach Forster. Finally, the departures of Sykes and Charles have opened up two starting positions that Marcus has previously played in.

As such, I would go for option 1 and at the same time discuss a move back to winger to replace Charles. Marcus' skillset seems to fit that position.

sammyt93
Option 3, A small pay rise, still getting to play alongside someone that Marcus knows. They could integrate into the new team together, and seeing as Charles has been an Assist machine for Canvey Island following him could give Diamond a chance to learn from him and improve his own passing game to a point where he can make more key passes and start getting some more assists himself to take some of the playmaking burden away from Charles.

Football Decision Made: Marcus Diamond decided to sign on with Witham and join Ryan Charles for the 2018-19 season. The Canvey Island supporters were enraged that a local talent would decide to betray his hometown team to join a rival for more cash. Marcus can't walk around Canvey Island without getting scolded... "Traitor!"

Diamond's loyalty rating and relationship with Canvey Island has dropped significantly. He'll be forced to watch the 2018 World Cup from his couch because he certainly isn't welcomed at the local pub. Canvey Island at Witham, Match Day #2, mark it on your calendars! Should be fun.

+3 Cobble,

Little harsh of the fans seeing as he wasn't offered a guaranteed contract at Canvey Island, only a pay as you play deal.

Hopefully he's extra motivated and fired up for when he faces them after this and can put in a strong performance to show they should have offered him a proper wage.
