Giro d'Italia Discussion

Our crash curse strikes again. Pretty much kills off any top 10 chances for Kwiatkowski. Shame, as he had done really well up to this point.

Ponzi better win the Ardennes triple...

Me, too. Stupid mountains
Who could have guessed that there are mountains in GTs ... :/

We only had one rider below 66mo in the lineup though, while you only had two guys slightly above that from the start...

Of course. Not really complaining about that fact as i had to expect that but rather commenting jokingly about discomfort due to mountains who are not beloved within my team. Van Stayen is the only one who has to finish the Giro of my team. Everyone else is just a little bonus.

Alarcon is really strong this Giro! Definitely one of the winners of this GT. I'm surprised that it is still that close in the last week as I expected Pluchkin to be miles ahead of everyone else. Pluchkin is one of my favourite GT riders so his win would be appreciated from me but it's cool to see another climber in the pink jersey this late (and especially Alarcon with his unique skill set :D ).

I dislike Alarcon winning the stage though as that puts him into the lead of the points comp. The peleton 1-2 that went to a break and the nearly uncontested last flat stage are coming back to haunt Van Stayen. He still has the two hilly stages to collect some points as well but the first of them will propably give the GC stars a better chance to score than Van Stayen so i have to hope that 3 domestiques are enough to win the last stage. That said: I'd really love a break appearance from Smirnovs on stage 19 and Dzamastagic or Smirnovs on the final stage!

Thanks for the nice reports! It is impressive how steadily you put them out at 20:00 !

Alarcon going in the TT - well assuming nothing big happens in the hilly stage - with the Maglia Rosa and Maglia Rossa boost. 40 seconds for Pluchkin is absolutely nothing, but those infamous PCM bonuses might well spice it up slightly - let's not forget Alarcon is nowhere near sure of a podium!

Elissonde 9th real shame he had the week were he crashed and rode rubbish but he's now started to really ride well and slowly moving up the GC with a couple of stage points too hopefully the Cataford can have a good TT now

Thank you for the report, sgdanny!

Guldhammer dropping to 8th is kind of disappointing, but we came here with a sponsor goal of a top 10, which looks rather safe, meaning I'm happy nevertheless. Impressive showing by eBuddy on that stage means the teams competition looks out of reach, eventhough Stake Laengen did well there. Hopefully that's a good sign for the TT, where he might fight for a top 10-15 considering the fatigue of the TT specialists.

Alarcon proving to be the best climber in this Giro, which is somewhat surprisingconsidering the two other riders on the current GC podium. Pluchkin still the huge favourite with the TT coming up, but he has by no means been as dominant as I thought he would be. And with a two minutes gap down to Madrazo, Alarcon must start to fancy his chances for second place overall, if the hilly stages don't give any significant gaps.

Congratulations Smowz!

Wellens up into seventh, still duelling with Guldhammer. Hopefully he can hold on to his lead through the upcoming TT. He certainly seems to have more energy left than Guldhammer.

Ah poor Warren Barguil, there was almost a hope of you breaking into the top 10. Can't complain though, I've been very rarely affected by crashes over the years, was almost certainly my team's time

Nerz did the best he could to take back the time on Brambilla and Olivier, but sadly in the end it might've been smarted to put his eggs in the final climb basket.

Still, if he stays with Brambilla in the hilly stages, he could still get him in the TT.

Quick question, do we still have the feature of getting extra sponsor points if we miss a goal due to a crash, as Nerz would be comfortably in the Top 10 without his 3 minute loss earlier? (though I think I remember that only worked if the goal was failed completely anyway and not just missed by a couple of positions..)

Congrats to Smowzy, that'll be an interesting TT!

As far as I remember it depends on how far away you are from your goal. If you finish only one off then that's already better than what the crash category accounts for so it doesnt matter as long as Nerz can hold onto his spot in GC.
If he drops to like 14th then you'd surely get the crash adjusted sponsor bonus just as if he failed it completely due to a crash. At least that was how it was last season Wink

I would not be so sure...what if Alarcon makes it 50-60 seconds in the hilly stage and daily form deletes the majority of the difference in TT stat? But i am still fairly optimistic, i have some feeling we can even gain on todays stage. Smile
I'll be back

Worrying time losses to Denifl if we're going to keep this top 5, fingers crossed. Nibbles lack of acceleration means he never attacks and never gets mentioned so I only know where he is at the end of reports Pfft

Well until now we have got absolutely nothing out of this Giro, so come on people if Kolesnikov attacks please let him go Grin

Great effort from Alarcon to give Pluchkin a bit of run for his money. This will be no problem for Pluchkin to take back in the TT though, but atleast it brings some excitement in terms of those final hilly stages.

Campero as highly placed as I think he will be. With two hilly stages and a TT he is likely to drop back to 23-25th I think. Hopefully Novak can keep attacking though (he did two times so far this race), as it will probably be a good move at some point. Also his TT shouldn't make him drop further.

I need both to stay in top 30, and preferably as close to 20th as possible. A stage top 10 would be highly appreciated also. I had one so far.

Congrats Smowz for the third stage win and the pink jersey, dont know what else to say...and thanks sgdanny!

Lets not also forget that Alarcon is 'only' MO 84. I do feel very lucky.

In a way you could possibly role play it that Pluch and Madman are waiting for chrono to pour theor energies out - but really both lacking those stage wins really. Pluchkin in particular very unspectacular Wiggins style ride - perhaps he forget to inject?

Very pleased though - my sprinters are really underwhelming at the moment so lucking out elsewhere is great.

You know those hill stages look tough after the chrono - makes most nervous. Vory nice for Jose to be in pink for chrono... doubt he will hold Madrazo but still you can but hope.

Acceleration and fighter stats must be extremely important, because Pluchkin is better in every other stat I think... This is also why Andy Schleck will win the Tour ahead of Spilak (or someone else).

Not entirely happy with what Bongiorno did with his only attempt at achieving something in this race there in the end, but who cares as for some reason, Nerz took this stage better than Brambilla and is now in a prime position for that last Top 10 spot Grin

As expected both Campero and Novak didn't do well here. With almost 4 minutes up to 20th, Campero can only look down in the GC now. The TT can cost some spots.

Having 69TT he should be able to keep Penasa behind him, but as we are in Italy there are no guarantees (I know the bonus doesn't exist)... Kangert will blaze through, but I think - and hope, that will be it.

Novak should not lose time to those behind him, and if lucky his 76TT can pose a threat on Bongiornos 68, Kunshins 71 and Pantanos 54.

If everything goes according to plan I will have Piter Campero in 22nd and Jakub Novak in 25th after the TT. Let's see...

Nice that Alarcon kept the jersey btw, it will make for a much more exciting final TT, despite Pluchkin probably smashing it by 3 minutes or so to him.

It will be interesting to see what the top 10 riders will do. There are a fair amount of those who are not very strong timetriallists - Especially not when looking at the volume of GC riders not present.

Meh, a top ten for Van Stayen should have been possible :/
At least he tried to attack...

And now a tt -.-
Cant we skip right to the final stage?
