Oh, I had a general question to the more knowledgeable cycling fans out there
I watched the wonderful German documentary, "Hell on Wheels" that follows Deutsche Telekom through the 2003 Tour de France. During that year, Ullrich was on Team Bianchi and then I guess he went back to T-Mobile the following year. Does anyone know why he switched to Bianchi and what happened to that team after he left?
thanks in advance for the info! |

Ullrich was banned from driving, due to drunk driving in May 2002 and tested positive for amphetamine in June 2002. He was baanned for 6 months and Telekom ended their contract. He went to Team Coast for 2003, who ran into financial problems. As they had a place in the tour, Bianchi took over lead sponsorhip role.
Ullrich and Ángel Casero left after 2003, and the squad pretty much fell apart due to a lack of any strong riders. Bianchi instead chose to sponsor other teams, such as Liquigas.

Bianchi was, if im right, team created after what happend (as NS wrote) by Ruddy Pevenage. He built that team around Big Jan, so he can be the rival for Lance at TdF03.
But as SN wrote, that team dissapear after that year, because Telekom/T-Mobile took Ullrich back.

agreed, i'm still trying to find a DVD of the full commentary because it's the best tour i've ever seen. Also it being the closest my boy Ullrich got to beating Armstrong. |

If it was, I have to agree. Finally, there was some action. Beloki challenged both Armstrong and Ullrich, and that was exactly what we - the viewers - needed. |

Originally Ullrich had recieved an offer from CSC. But the Team Coast contract involved a lot bigger payment. |

Arh, I remember it. I was in a swimming pool in Turkey while I watched it with lots of other Danes. |

Long live the kaiser!!!!!
It's a shame how his career ended, He'll always be my favorite sport figure. Don't know why, but I've never been more attached to a figure than Jan.
