Tour takes Riis off winners list
Riis beat Telekom team-mate Jan Ullirch to the 1996 Tour title
Tour de France organisers say they no longer consider Bjarne Riis the winner of the 1996 race after he admitted using performance-enhancing drugs.
Tour spokesman Philippe Sudres said: "We have removed him from the list because of the doping admission.
"We consider philosophically that he can no longer claim to have won."
Riis's team-mate Jan Ullrich finished second in the 1996 Tour but there is no indication yet that the title will be awarded to him.
Sudres said it is up to cycling's governing body, the UCI, to formally revoke Riis's title which would be a first in the Tour's 104-year history.
The UCI said last month the time limit for sanctioning Riis has expired but urged him "to return his yellow jersey, the symbol of his victory".
After his confession last month, the 43-year-old said: "My jersey's at home in a cardboard box. They are welcome to come and get it."
Riis, now the sporting director of Team CSC, confirmed that he used the blood-booster EPO between 1993 and 1998, including during his '96 Tour win.
His was among a string of similar admissions by former Telekom team riders, including Eric Zabel, Udo Boelts, Bert Dietz, Christian Henn and Rolf Aldag.
The revelations were a further blow to the Tour de France, which begins its 2007 edition in London on 7 July.
Last year's winner, American Floyd Landis, faces losing his title and being banned for two years after he tested positive for synthetic testosterone at last year's race.
He is awaiting a decision from an arbitration panel on whether the victory will stand.

Again, it doesn't have any formal meaning. Riis did win the Tour in 1996 even if he isn't present in ASO's records. In UCI's records, he's still there
Anyway, I think it's really stupid only to delete him from the rankings. What about their own darling, Richard Virenque, who was caught during the Festina-affair in 1998? And what about Erik Zabel's green jersey in 1996? Or Thévenet, Indurain, Pantani (eventually Ullrich). And both Eddy Merckx and Joop Zoetemelk have also been caught with doping. If Riis is deleted, those should be too. Especially if they are caught in a doping control. Riis wasn't caught, but decided to admit it himself (yes, I know he was pressured to do it, but still. He could have kept his mouth shut ) |

It would have been better for him to keep his mouth shut.
And that's not my headline. It's the BBCs.
But now i wonder will he give back the Jersey or keep it. We'll find out in a few days i suppose. |

My reply was a reaction to the article, not to you - don't worry But it's quite old news now. Riis said "come and take the jersey" on the day he confessed -and that's like two or three weeks ago. I don't think he will send it with the mail, but if they come to take it away from him I'm sure he will give it away. "It doesn't mean anything to me", he said at the press conference. |

yeah, this is about the ASO mainly saying that they don't think of him as the winner any more.
The ASO amuse me sometimes though. It's way past the date that a title can be formerly taken away, and they have no hard proof (other than his admission) that he actually doped.
In other things as well the fact that they aren't allowing certain teams to take part in their races because of their sponsors. It's just bizare. |

Well, Riis was doped, but so was his contenders. I mean, the winner would be Peter Luttenberger if we excluded all the non-dopers. That says a lot, doesn't it? |

who's to say Luttenberger wasn't doped?
pretty much anything's possible.
his performance dropped significantly after that year. maybe he stopped?
or maybe he was just blocked by bigger riders who he had to work for (at times he definitely was).
we can make conjectures all we want, but we'll never know the truth.
that's pretty much why I prefer to look to the future and what we CAN do.
these confessions by T-Mobile staff seems pretty much pointless...

In cycling weekly there is an article saying that this make this issue about doping worse, Maybe this is why he was so quiet hanging his head in shame. |

yes there is a lot of reports on english races, and worldwide races equally
for example they've got a full spread on andy schleck and a full page on the National '25' championships, but they get reports on the all the premier calendar races and some non-premier calendar ones too
and there's Q&A sections, advice on equipment and lots of stuff, i would recommend it to everyone within the UK and maybe Europe
