Movistar - US Postal {2015}
State of the Team #1 : TVG and Breakaways

Van Garderen following Ponzi for 2nd at Classique du Grand-Duché.

The first Pro Tour standings update has been released.
So, it's time for our staff to reflect on the team's results so far.

Well, I guess the good news is we aren't in the drop zone.
The bad news is it's only 19 points away in the GTs are coming.

So you might ask, why is this bad news exactly?
Because our top duo of climbers haven't performed.

Fothen and Ratiy both went to race Tirreno - Adriatico.
Both got beaten in GC by their helper Lawrence Warbasse.
Warbasse (23rd), Ratiy (27th) and Fothen (33rd).

While climbing duo debut wasn't very promising.
We can be proud of our team stepping up in their absence.
Breakaway warriors like Warbasse, Paulinho, Borges and Abreu.

Abreu sprinting to 3rd during Stage 7 of the Tirreno - Adriatico.

For us to survive in the Pro Tour this breakaway success is needed.
It has to be all hands on deck from the start all the way to the finish.
Especially if our leaders (Fothen, Ratiy, Maksimov and Altur) struggle.

So, to conclude this first update of our team for this season.
I'm content to see 6 of our riders in the Top 150 of the Ind. Standings.

Lovely little overview. Guess your headline stands pretty well for your latest results in Spain Smile TVG is doing great and will help you moving up into the safety zone for now.

Again my congrats to his victory of Pais Vasco!
Luis Leon Sanchez
TVG with a great recent win which will put you in a good position now!
Looking forward to Garby taking Corsica in a surprise attack. Pfft

Somehow, some way we still aren't in relegation territory yet.
Even after a pitiful Giro, Vancouver and California in this stretch
we managed to gain 806 points mainly on pure strength in numbers.

Also TVG winning the Vuelta al Pais Vasco helps as well...

But, that excitement has been well documented already.

Ratiy and Plaza helped break the non-Top 15 placing at the Giro
in the final week which was a nice burden to get off our shoulders.
And we are pleased 7 out of our 8 starters finished the race.

In Canada all eyes were on youngster Marc Christian Garby.
The loanee from Carlsberg - Danske Bank was team captain,
but was tested in this HC race by loanee David De la Cruz.

Vancouver prologue was won by former team captain
David Abal who now rides for PCT Buff - Polska.

Garby got the bragging rights by finishing 22nd overall.
Just one spot better than De la Cruz who finished 23rd.

Fothen was to carry our torch at the Tour of California but
absolutely imploded on Stage 6 and finished 102nd overall.
Meaning we have failed our second team goal of the season.

To wrap things up here is a look at the individual standings.
Hard to believe that Fothen, Ratiy and Maksimov makeup less
than 6% of our team's total scoring output so far this season.

It's literally TVG or bust at this point. Not good, but it's all we got.

We knew it was coming eventually, but it still stings.
The Ardennes classics went okay and the Vuelta went okay.
But, apparently okay isn't good enough at this point in the season.

Strada Appia Antica was disappointing considering Young (21st)
placed better than Altur (35th), Tsatevich (23rd) and Insausti (65th).

Borges edged out for 2nd on Stage 13 on the Vuelta.

My thoughts on our Vuelta perform, our leaders failed us.
The support guys like De la Cruz, Warbasse and Borges
deserved better for all their efforts over the 21 stages.

Then Ardennes. Tejay Van Garderen should have done better.
Amstel: Beat by Tsatevich. Fleche: Decent 7th. LBL: Barely 8th.

TVG playing catch-up after missing the winning move at LBL.

All hope of surviving really comes down to three things.
1. TVG Heroics. 2. Fothen Exceptional TDF. 3. Depth Scoring.

The individual standings really highlight the team doing their best
to pick up the slack from guys like Ratiy, Maksimov and Fothen.

The Man, The Myth, The Legend

Roman Maksimov

The Russian Rocket : Journey to First Pro Tour Stage Win

Maksimov puts his head down, the promise land in his sights.

Once upon a time, in a land far far away, there was a man who liked this girl. Seven months later a little boy named Roman was born. A year after that the boy had learned to talk and six months after that he was already riding a bike.

At least that's what folklore says. He was always too fast for his own good.

Roman Maksimov, 27, is an one of a kind sprinter for Pro Tour cycling team Movistar - US Postal. Most know him by his nickname, The Russian Rocket, which was ironically stolen from the former NHL great Pavel Bure.

Maksimov is one of the fastest sprinters in the peloton... If there is no wind, completely flat, partly cloudy with the sun peaking out, his equipment works properly, no one blocks him in, and he launches at the perfect moment.

He is a complicated fellow. He is never one to sit still. He bounces around:

YearTeamStage WinsRanking Points

2010(PT) White Bear - Wild Horse065 (346th)

2013(CT) Team Privatbank [Loan]4168 (52nd)
2014(PCT) Project: Africa1394 (50th)
2015(PT) Movistar - US Postal1TBD

After three seasons of developing and hiding his face he found himself as the lead sprinter on the newly found Team CSC - Orbea in 2012. Mresuperstar gave him a hefty contract and expected great things. That didn't happen.

Maksimov put up a goose egg. His notably results were a pair of third places at the Tour of America. Frustrated by his performances Mre shipped him East to Privatbank so he could be closer to his family and gain his confidence in the lower division.

First Career Stage Win. Tour of Southland - Stage 3.

It paid off. A quiet season turned upside down with three stages win at the Tour of Southland. He went on to win another stage in Slovenia a few weeks later.

It was all fun and games until things started to get heated...

His house was set on fire, police reports later found Privatbank CEO Dubilet was responsible for the accident. Maksimov sued, but the case was mysteriously dropped. Never to be talked again, many figure the two came to private settlement valued in the millions.

In the end, Maksimov fled the scene and went to Africa. A Russian in Africa? That's what happens when desperate managers have too much money on their hands.

"I showed up. I got the biggest house in the town. I won a stage. I left."

Maksimov is always good for an entertaining interview.

Winning Stage 1 of the 2014 Vuelta a Mallorca.

After the stage the Russian Rocket had some candid words for his old teams.
But, what caught the media's attention is what he said over the race radio.

"I feel better than I did when first visit to strip-club at age 12."

Not a very professional thing to say after winning a race. As a results, strip clubs across Russia were inspected and shutdown. As for Maksimov, he took the questions like a champ.

Grabbing a bottle of vodka out his bag he left the press conference. Needless to say his time at Project: Africa was short lived. The rocket crash landed back in Spain at the feet of Mre.

Since then it's been a bumpy ride - with way too many hills to keep Maksimov happy - at Movistar - US Postal in the Pro Tour. In February he checked himself into an alcohol rehabilitation center unannounced to the team.

In April, he told a reporter, "I have spent all my money. There is nothing left. If you're not buying bottles, you can't get the girls."

Mre has consistently denied the rumors of Maksimov quitting on the team. Then the Tour de France came around.

"Everyone is fighting for their jobs. Maksimov especially. I have told him this might be his last chance. Not just here, not just in cycling, but in his life."

The Russian Rocket nearly finished the Tour getting to Stage 20. Then things just started to click. He went home for the GP Moscow and finished 5th.

Then Maksimov went to the Vuelta a Colombia. A mountainous tour with a flat first stage. No one expected him to do anything, he hadn't done anything all season. Then it happened.

Maksimov wins his first career Pro Tour stage. Vuelta a Colombia - Stage 1.

Since then he has continued to prove he deserves a fourth, fifth or sixth (?) chance to be the fastest man in the peloton. With two second places at the Tour of Northern Europe, he is doing his best to keep his squad in the Pro Tour.

"I always want to win. I still like to have fun and party. I've just realized the girls on the podium put out more than the girls in the club do."

Yep, the media was all over that comment. Since then three podium girls have been let go by the MGUCI. As for Maksimov? He is on the best form of his career and the only thing going to slow him down is probably another change of teams at the end of the season. At least that's what history indicates.

Going to be a Bacardi / Volkswagen / Movistar battle for safety.
One thing we have on our side, promotion/relegation experience.
We have been in these type of situations the last two seasons.

Sure, both time we have failed.
But, with luck and kindness of MGUCI we did prevail.

The best place to start the recap has to be the Tour de France.

De la Cruz settles for 2nd on Stage 17 on the Tour.

The Good: Four stage Top 10's. 7 out of 8 riders finished. Breakaways.
The Bad: Fothen (14), Maksimov out on Stage 20, Garby still missing.

Next up? Deutschland Tour. TVG takes 4th overall. *High Five*
Then, GP Moscow. Russian Rocket takes 5th. *Double High Five*
Followed by Baltic Chain Tour and the Youngster Tour... Just ugly.

Outta nowhere Maksimov wins first career PT stage!

Maksimov on fire. Stage win to open the Vuelta a Colombia.
Two second places at the TONE, plus 2nd in the points competition.

Who is this man and what has he done to the old useless sprinter...
Too bad his season is now over. Where was this early, seriously!?!

That brings us to five PT races left. This is who we have to lean on.

That's what needs to happen to survive.

Fothen seems to be the man who let you down so far. I know he isn't a top rider anymore but 264 points is extremely low for a rider of his capacity. He should have been somewhere around 400-500pts imo. Similar riders are positioned thereabout.

Cyclist's Development

The results are in, the training complete!
We are going to have some beastly cyclists next season.
They have been working hard all season and deserve the recognition.

I really like your top 4 talents.
Finally a very solid Spaniard for the cobbles again. Also with needed backup stats except acc.

Warbasse is a nice 2nd tier stage racer, while Fraile basically is Rolland in Spanish and Young a nice leadout or for smaller points in several cobbled races.
Agree with roturn here. Those top 4 talents are really nice. Also the point with Fraile = Rolland is almost true. Fraile is better - Quite a bit imo.

+2TT +2HI

I think Fraile is going to be a very very good PCT rider. He will need some training to be a very good PT rider, but it is definately possible. If he was 81TT he would be one of the most interesting small GC riders in the peloton. He could survive semi rough terrain better than riders such as Coppel, Cornu, Cancellara and Ignatiev. Riders like Kai Reus, Brent Bookwalter, Matthias Brändle, Lars Boom and Kristjan Koren have been really valuable in the past.

Us here at Carlsberg - Danske Banke would like to express our immense gratitude for training Marc Christian Garby this year, and our deepest apologies for how useless he's been for your team.
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy
That Maksimov article  I was so happy to see him take that win! He's a strange character, but he's a legend. I like him so much now that he's not on my team.

I see you have some nice American talents there. I know of an African team who has a few lonely American teams on its roster. Wink

Nice to see Warbesse improve and he's had a good year again after a very solid year last season at RBC also like the look of Abreu his stats look great for a domestique / breakaway rider.
Thanks everyone! I'm really happy with my talents. Especially Altur and Fraile, can't wait to see what they can do finally maxed out. Smile

State of the Team #5: Survival

Total Team Triumph. TTT of Dreams in Copenhagen - Malmö.

In the last update staying in the PT looked bleak, but it was possible.
We needed to make up 83 points and past two teams in five races.
Well, we did it. Against the odds we get another year in the PT.

We findselves on the right side of the cut line again.
2014: Narrowly got promoted to the PT due to inactive teams.
2013: Should have been relegation to the CT. Activeness kept us up.

We like to make things interesting, to say the least.
Here is a brief recap of the last month and a half and
how we managed to miss the drop back down to the PCT.

We began in the small nation with the large name: Liechtenstein.

Thrown off the back. Fothen and Ratiy dropped over 40kms to go.

Something we will certainly have to look into during the offseason.
We thought having two 80+ climbers would be better than Abal.
Hindsight is 20/20, but I think we made the wrong decision.

Abal to make his return to the program in 2016? We shall see...

TTT have never been our calling card. Until it had to be.
First off the start line, we blitzed the course and set the time to beat.
Only TTT powerhouse Oz and Project 1t4i could knock us down a peg.

The effort was badly needed after a complete no-show
in our next race at Praha - Karlovy Vary - Praha.

Still trailing two teams going into the final two races,
we turned things over to our main man: Tejay Van Garderen.

TVG pulls us through at Tour of Tasmania and Giro d'Lombardia.

Van Garderen with a seven place overall finish in Australia
and a sixth place monument finish to cap the season.
Thus, catapulting Movistar - US Postal to safety.

Our big name, top free agent purchase, pulled us through!
As you can see we relied on him heavily this season,
but it's a loanee that had quite a good year as well:

Congratz on staying up in the end! Smile
As you said Tejay was surely the difference, so glad me overbidding you on Brajko weren't the deciding factor for your time in PT.
Anyway, now that you made it through your first PT you get some good depth to build on, and should be in for a much better/safer season if you manage to get another star into your lineup.
