Something's bugging me
issoisso
I'll get right to the point:

there are quite a few riders that seem out of their depth at the ProTour level. but those are mostly youngsters who might have potential and just be adjusting.

however, there are a few people who keep getting their contracts renewed and I fail to see why.

the most dreadful cases as I see them are these two.

Ian Mcleod (Française des Jeux)
Mads Kaggestad (Crédit Agricole)

Mads one can argue is a worker for Hushovd. but seriously, have you ever seen him do anything other than fetch bottles? couldn't pretty much anyone do that?

and McLeod...I just have no comment to make, really, other than I've seen him on breakaways a few times, and he gets dropped by whoever else is in the break, every time.

can anyone offer any fresh views on this?

pherhaps pointing out some qualities in these two (or others) that I might be missing?

I have never even heard about Ian Mcleod, but Mads Kaggestad's role is pretty simple, I think. He's Norwegian and is therefore a great support for their Norwegian top-sprinter, Thor Hushovd. I honestly don't know if they are good friends, but I think they are - and that's more than enough reason to keep him at the team.

honestly, keeping him there just because he's a friend of the star?? doesn't just seem weird to me, it also seems wrong. as in unfair.

Its not as if Kaggestad is denying someone else a chance is it?

actually, he is.
I bet a lot of other riders would love to ride the Giro and the Tour. instead, he's there. playing bottle-boy.

the key word there is talented. Putsep and Tombak are actually reasonably talented, and Mandri is very good, but what has Kaggestad got?

I am not still shure if they had made it without Jaan.
This is like F1 situation..i am not 100% shure that all the best riders is in race...lot of lobbyism and money..good for us in cycling that isnt that drastic.

I can perfectly understand Thor telling the management "okay, here's a norwegian with potential" and them signing him. I just can't understand why these two guys keep getting their contracts renewed after showing nothing.

Especially McLeod. a South African on a french team is definitely not there because of his nationality Smile

I agree with you that it seems pretty unprofessional only to hire riders because of the rider being friends with a good rider. It's unfair, but again, it's normal. CSC only had Lombardi because of Basso - and as far as I remember, Cancellara was not in the Tour team in 2005, because Lombardi took his spot. It's not fair, but that's how the sport works.

Good news is that continental teams stepping hard on pro tour tail. We got Garzelli, Weseman, Relax team, Tinkoff...etc..If that continues after couple years UCI is in real trouble.

actually I can buy Riis' explanation that Lombardi was supposed to keep Basso out of the wind. he did that for a few riders throughout his career. Cipollini being the biggest example.

Also, the next year, that same job was done, this time by O'Grady.

besides...if anyone was left out, it was most likely not Cance. most likely a climber. who? no idea. but most likely not Cance.

Nope, Cancellara has not rode the tour for CSc - the last time he rode Le Tour, it was for Fasso Bartolo - where he won the Prologue.

what I mean is that Cancellara wasn't the guy who was left out to put in Lombardi. not without a TTT on that year's Tour.

yeah, I forgot about that.

let's hope he's back. it's always nice to have more well-funded teams in the business.

Ferretti was always a bit like Patrick Head at the Williams F1 team:
a jackass who everybody hated and who didn't get along with anyone..... but if you happened to be mentally strong enough to take it, he would really take you to the next level as a rider

I guess the only resonable conclusion to your issue here is to say 'that is cycling and that is how its gonna be' and move on with your life.

I guess so. Thanks for your views, everyone.

I was hoping to be missing something those guys brought to the team, but I guess not
