New Cycling Game Project

Hello again guys Smile currently doing some concepts for the sponsor and goal system in the game.

I am toying with various ideas but feel free to answer the following and help me in the process:
- Which paramters should a sponsor have? (ambition level, budget level etc)
- How much influence do you as a player want the sponsor to have in your career?
- How should sponsor goals for the team be determined? does the manager choose himself or does the sponsor dictate everything.
- What other things should matter to the sponsor than pure goals?

Lets raise a discussion about the topic and help me shape the concepts for this essential part of the game Wink

I don't think, sponsors should have a large impact on the goals. Just see Bjarne Riis and Saxo Bank ... think I've said enough already.

Influence: Well a sponsor can pretty much run the team. They provide the money, and no money means no team. Certainly they should be the primary force in Goals and should have an influence on the squad (nationality bonuses or signing particular star names)

Goals: PCM currently does this pretty good. They can provide a list of goals which you as a manger can edit. This editing effects you budget, bigger goals gives more money.

Other important things to sponsors are Results, Squad (nationalities, star names), Schedule and Who rides what races (big names in key races etc.)

I remember the huge work you did for your pcm 2006-2007's 2005 db, and I'm almost certain that if you really want to do it, you will succeed. This game will be a great thing. A focus on the management? many player had been asking for it for many years.

Too bad if we loose some thing compared to pcm, if the franchise is a succes, these thing can be added later.

If you do realize this dream, be sure I would be glad to pay to buy a copy of your game.

Greeting from Montreal and best of luck Smile

One thing I am missing in PCM is reward for breakaway appearances.

Well, if you get the KoM jersey, it's possibly rewarded, but we often hear cycling commentators say how this or that breakaway member is presenting his sponsor that way, how the sponsors get coverage through being in the break etc.

I'm not saying that it should have a massive influence, but undoubtedly it has an effect on sponsor satisfaction and it's also a nice thing for the player if he gets anything out of the try in case he fails to win the intermediate prizes or a win that way.

Maybe simply recording the amount of breakaway kilometres per race or month or just overall, and then converting that into a value that gets added to the standard one determined by achieved actual sponsor goals.

@Cio - I always remember that George Hincapie was the rider with most TV time in the Tour de France when working for L.A. because he was just always at the front of the peloton.
I think it's a good idea, but it would be nice to see it scaled between WT races and small races with 60 riders in a swap in Indonesia. One will gain you 1 billion views, the other 6 frogs Pfft

thanks for the feedback guys. Seems like we all agree what matters most in this aspect of the game.

After a small break during my exams the project is back on track and the engine is making progress as we speak Smile more news as they become available.

Sorry for the random question but me and my friend have been going on an argument about what you mean by the "Dogma"

I claim its is the bike the "Pinerello Dogma"

He claims a dogma is a graphical term used in bike creation.

Please help us settle the score

Just asked Google ''What is a Dogma'' ?

Answer was :
Dogma
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For other uses, see Dogma (disambiguation).
Dogma is a principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true.[1] It serves as part of the primary basis of an ideology, nationalism or belief system, and it cannot be changed or discarded without affecting the very system's paradigm, or the ideology itself. The term can refer to acceptable opinions of philosophers or philosophical schools, public decrees, religion, or issued decisions of political authorities.[2]

The term derives from Greek δόγμα "that which seems to one, opinion or belief"[3] and that from δοκέω (dokeo), "to think, to suppose, to imagine".[4] Dogma came to signify laws or ordinances adjudged and imposed upon others by the First Century. The plural is either dogmas or dogmata, from Greek δόγματα. The term "dogmatics" is used as a synonym for systematic theology, as in Karl Barth's defining textbook of neo-orthodoxy, the 14-volume Church Dogmatics.

That gave me an idea:

How about a team can possess or develop a certain reputation, in terms of what kind of a team it is. For instance, Movistar or Sky would be a stage racing team, Argos is a sprint team, Lotto is more of an allround team, Europcar or Bardiani are teams known for their breakaways and Wanty is a breakaway/classic hybrid team. Your reputation can slowly change, depending on you riding style, the main source of ranking points and the riders you sign (fighters -> breakaway team, climbers -> stage racing team etc.).

Developing this idea further, you could say that some sponsors want you to change your reputation towards a certain direction (for instance you get a new sponsor at Cannondale that wants you to turn it into a stage racing team). And then you can chose if you want to follow that path or develop the team in another way and risk making your sponsor unhappy.

Also, your team's reputation could influence whether a rider is likely to sign with you. A strong stage racer might not be keen on signing for a classics team, fearing he has no support. On the other hand, if you're already a breakaway team, strong fighters and rouleurs might be more interested in joining you. And iirc, you wanted to implement rider personalities, so maybe an ambitious, but rather mediocre classic rider might want to go to a stage racing team to claim the leading role for the classics, while a rider with the same qualities, but more of a team player, would rather go to a classics team to join forces with stronger riders.

I think you get the idea, and I think it has the potential for even more background stuff, but it might also need a lot of work to be properly implemented. I'd be interested to see what you guys think Wink

First of all, I think it's a good idea. But does this mean, that when I win a GT like TdF with Argos, that the sponsor doesn't like this, because i have to win the green jersey?

Otherwise a great idea Grin

That would be a detail to work out, but of course no sponsor would be unhappy about a TdF victory. I was thinking more of something like, the sponsor wants you to concentrate on sprints and classics, and if you go and sign a major stage racer and let go your best sprinter in exchange, the sponsor may not be happy, even if the new signing might be able to win the TdF.

But this feature shouldn't be too far reaching, there could be enough sponsor who either don't care for the reputation, want you to be an allround team, or simply want you to develop any reputation at all, if the team hasn't one already, so that they become known for something specifically, no matter what that is.

That said, one could also make the whole feature optional: There would be normal careers, and those where you get some sort of szenario from your sponsor, like a five year plan or something. A szenario that could change when the sponsor suddenly folds, for instance. I think there are lots of possibilities.

It could be negotiable sort of like the Philosophies thing in FM14 when you sign a contract with a team. In that game certain philosophies include "playing attacking football", "signing young players to challenge for the first team" and things along those lines. Its also possible to negotiate not having any philosophies or including your own if that is something you want.

In this case when getting a new sponsor or joining a new team or anything like that, its something that could be discussed with the sponsor and could affect other things like budget, depending on how for or against the sponsor is with it.

I suppose it could work similar to how nationalities work, where the sponsor is happier with a leader of a certain speciality over another, e.g. if a sponsor wants a sprinter team then it would rate sprinters higher then a similar rider from another speciality when you go to register your squad for races. E.G. he'd prefer Kittel to Contador as a notable rider in the race whereas a stage racing sponsor would have it the other way around.

Also I'd imagine they would want a percentage of your riders to be of said speciality, or maybe it would be simpler and more realistic for them to want it to be the most prevalent speciality in your squad, e.g. 5 sprinter, 4 stage racer, 4 time trialists, 3 puncheurs, 2 climbers would be fine for a PCT sprinter focussed team.

Great discussion guys!

I am looking into stuff like that. Team has some ratings related to their perfomance in specific categories of racing and the sponsor negotiation can be tied into those stats Smile

Next up comes the way the manager earn sponsor satisfaction. There will be a lot of ways but certainly the sponsor might prioritize certain above objectives, to put some numbers on the aspect it could be like this:
A sponsor that favors ardennes classics
Win LBL: 8 Points
Win Fleche Wallone: 7 Points
Win Tour de France: 8 Points
Win Paris Roubaix: 4 Points

Some scaling like that could be the route i take for the game Smile

The scale depending on what the sponsors/team prefer, there should be some ability to negotiate with it. For example, If I am Omega, they prefer the cobbles races, but the manager can add things like Tour de France Stage Wins and things like that.

is it possible to have more sponsor satisfaction if you achieve your objectives with riders from the regions they prefer? so you get an extra when you do it with a rider your sponsor targets instead of a guy from another country

please?

I don't know if anybody mentionned it yet, but the domain of the sponsor should have some sort of impact.

For exemple, transportation company could reduce race participation fee. Or a bicycle company could improve the equipment/reduce the equipment price.

Also, two company comming from the same branch would be unlikly to co-sponsor a team (like the old secondary sponsor system from pcm).

Certainly an aspect i will look into Smile sponsors already prioritize certain riders and can tell the manager that they want certain riders on the team for the next season.

For the domain of sponsors, thanks for pointing that out, i will look into that.
