BTW, does anyone know offhand who finished 2nd in the Giro last year? Seems to me that if the authorities can establish that he was doping leading up to the Giro in 06, then they would probably strip his title. A possibility anyway.

I never liked basso. But I must admit, I have mad respect for him now. He, unlike the others, has come out. He might be a snitch now, but I think this is necessary to clean up the sport. The names linked to this are friggin amazing. If it was just an isolated incident, I would be angry at him...but just looking at the list...almost everyone was a cheat. |

I have no respect for him what so ever. He just tells everything he knows and implicate others to lower his suspension with a year or something. |

Phanekim: Come on -- I don't think respect is neccesary here. He has been denying everything for almost a year now, and he didn't admit anything before they had 100 % non-deniable evidence.
Also, I don't support lowering his punishment. Yes, he might be helpful, but it seems to me as if they have all the evidence they need. His help will probably not provide any new, "stunning" information. |

I can't say I have "mad respect" for him but i do respect the fact that he appears to be admitting to what he did. I find this much more preferable to other riders who, in the face of overwhelming evidence, continue to plead their innocence. Ullrich. .. Landis. . . Hamilton. . . what about Heras, did he ever 'fess up? These guys will probably never admit what they did, and thus we'll always have to wonder to ourselves as fans, "Well, I guess there's a chance that Hamilton had an evil twin or that the testing in Landis' case was faulty or some other bullshit conspiracy theory". At least with a handful of guys who come clean (Millar, Basso, others?) we know for sure that they cheated. I appreciate them for that. |

Just a clarification, I don't support lowering his punishment. I do hope his example will make it easier for other cyclists involved to come out of the woodwork. The fact is...he is the first one to admit that such a doping ring exists. This is huge. Everyone even Fuentes has denied its existence until now. I do retract "mad respect"...but I do have respect for him for sticking his neck out first like this.
I feel bad for cyclists that have never cheated throughout the years. How screwed they all were. Moreau, Leiphiemer, julich.
As for the riders that cheated? I am probably more lenient than most of you guys are on them. These cheating schemes sort of build upon themselves. If Jan cheats...Ivan has to cheat as well to stand a chance. If Ivan doesn't cheat, you bet you mancebo and others will. Where does that leave Ivan?
Its sort of a snowball effect at times. Sometimes the pressure to cheat is just quite simply too great. Of course this is no excuse, but you can imagine the amount of pressure some of these guys are. Its almost like...cheat or you won't get the results to get a contract...which means you can't do the sport/job you love and you can't feed your family.
Again, if this was just Basso cheating i'd hate him a lot...but since everyone and their mama is involved....i mean just look at the list. Now, even Valverde is implicated.

I have no respect for a man who is doped, ok so he has admitted the whole thing... Couldn't he have done that last year? come on it was so obvious that he had something to do with OP
Dwight K. Schrute: 'I'm not a hero. Im just a mere defender of the office. You know who is a hero? Hiro from Heroes. That's a hero. And Bono'.

Now, it's being said that Basso wasn't doped at any point, but wanted to dope himself for the Tour.
Personally, I don't think it makes any sense. After the Giro performance, who would need dope? |

Nice point Mike. He killed the field in Italy last year so why dope up for the TdF?
As for Phanekim's comments, these are exactly the arguments that Greg Lemond made. He claims that the year after he won his final TdF, he was racing and was so far behind the peloton that the only explanation he had was that many of the riders were juiced up. His argument was something like: "Last year, I was the best cyclist in the world. This year, I suck. How could that be unless everyone is doping this year?".
So the "keeping up with the Joneses" theory of doping probably does motivate many of the cyclists to cheat. But for me, that argument only makes me want to stamp it out even harder. If you can completely eliminate doping/performance enhancing drugs in the Peloton, then this argument no longer applies.
I think there are a few things to consider about these matters. (1) The image of the sport is critical. Fans want to watch a race and say, "Well, Valverde won because he's the best cyclist today". With doping, fans can see the same result and say, "Well, he won because he was doped up the most". So the human element is gone from the sport and it gets reduced to cell biology. Sponsors do not pay millions of Euros for fans to watch cell biology. (2) Getting rid of doping is really about protecting riders from themselves. These people are DRIVEN to win. It's engrained in their minds. So if you have to boost your hematocrit up to levels where your blood is sludging around in your veins like molasses in order to win the TdF, some riders, many riders will do that. And they can die.
Anyway, I know you aren't condoning doping Phanekim and I feel the strength of your arguments. But certainly the sport needs to really really crack down on this form of cheating if it is to survive. Perhaps Basso's admission of guilt will help the sport in this regard.

Great. So much for singing Basso's praises for coming out about doping. Now, his stance is that he ATTEMPTED to dope but NEVER DID dope. So the lies just keep coming:

And here's a nice rundown on all the doping offenses in recent years. It just shows how naive I am to think that the sport will ever be clean.

That chronology completely missed out the Cofidis scandal in which Millar was caught and banned. |
