Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 3
Smowz
i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3a-parcours_zpsb4d3f5a2.jpg

The favourites allowed a group of late attackers take the glory yesterday. But today is a new opportunity with another uphill finish following some tough circuits. The climbs are not categorised that high, but do have some steep sections.

Still current leader i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sagan and the rest of the five men who broke away yesterday will be difficult to crack without a concerted effort. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lotto’s tactics in particular will come under scrutiny.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3b-Thebreakoftheday_zpse51714ed.jpg

We join the pictures now just 3.5km from the first mountain prime of the day. White jersey wearer i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam just four points back on KoM leader and team mate i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Vanendert is in the break. Alongside him is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png McEvoy, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Rodriguez Segura and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Riblon. However they only have 30 seconds on a reluctant peloton.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3c-reluctantpack_zps01cfc36b.jpg

The prime at the top though is the chance for the break to extend their time gap.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3d-KoMprimepushesbreakclear_zps14d3b97a.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam makes a mess of it.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3e-Delagetakesit_zps19edacf1.jpg

Nethertheless the attacking brings the break to a lead of of a minute as they begin to move clear. By the first sprint point which is at around 110kms to go they have a four minute lead.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3f-Delagetakessprinttoo_zps56b29e35.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage wins the sprint over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam, who could move into the youth jersey lead today. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Riblon is third here with the other two seemingly unbothered about sprinting being well down on GC.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3g-Venchitakeleaderjobseriously_zps3cb3b280.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Marinangelli and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Favalli lead the pack cheered on by their nations fans, they are keeping the gap between four and five minutes.

The next KoM prime again sees i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam struggle.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3h-Delagecontinuestodoagoodjob_zps1d2bff2b.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage takes another one as he begins to make a move in the competition, having won the first as well he moves to 11 points. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png McEvoy is trying to continue Pendletons great tradition of KoM point grabbers picking up second at both so far for 7 points. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Riblon is choosing the snail’s pace with third at both for 3 points.

We head down to the three hilly circuits and the final third of this stage.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3i-thetripleheader_zps281eaf6e.jpg

The lead five are seeing their lead dramatically reducing. It’s i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Venchi who are really cracking the whip much like i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Milka did yesterday.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3j-Venchicontinuetolead_zps68b59660.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage takes the next sprint ahead of i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Riblon and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam as they head to the Cat 4 KoM prime.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3k-McEvoysurprise_zpsa233fc73.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png McEvoy surprises i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage this time moving to 12 points with i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage up to 14 points. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Riblon again taking third place, just edging out an increasingly frustrated i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam.

The pack have been playing games again with the gap to the break still hovering between 3 and 4 minutes. It is a twisty descent this one all set up for an exciting finale if the riders care to produce one.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3l-switchbackdescent_zps6e3a512d.jpg

Sensing i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Venchi who have reduced the gap to the break to under three minutes i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Rabon makes an attack.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3m-Rabonattacks_zps9b96edff.jpg

Clearly i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Milka have moved on from protecting i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Bewley as they did in a fine effort yesterday. Up front the man for the primes today i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage once again takes the maximum time and points at the sprint. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam again second with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Riblon is third.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3n-Delageagain_zps6a39786a.jpg

It’s a similar situation at the mountain prime as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Delage now moves into provisional joint lead of the KoM with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Vanendert by nabbing the full five over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png McEvoy and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Sinkeldam at the penultimate mountain prime.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3o-DelagepipsMCEvoy_zpsb5fa491d.jpg

35 km to go and the lead five have a minute over i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Rabon who is hanging a minute ahead of the pack. The pack drastically reduced by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Aker and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Pearl Adidas to about 70 riders.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3p-Packisreduced_zpsed8aa240.jpg

All the race favourites are there. Onto that descent into to the finish area for the penultimate time and we could see a spectacular one next time as the pack are in sight of the breakaways and the chasing i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Rabon.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3q-Thedescentrevealsthegaps_zps18fd4deb.jpg

It’s i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Wikipedia who make the catch and as they all look at each other i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Rabon attacks again marked by i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png McCarthy .

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3r-RabonandMcCarthy_zps18e589d6.jpg

Neither of these two are big favourites then again i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sagan and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Rabottini were not big favourites either and they managed to win the day yesterday. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Bobridge makes a move a kilometre later as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso marks.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3s-Bobogoes_zps50ce2a92.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Van den Hugenhaben also goes with this but it is just pulling things back together. That said we are approaching the crest so the KoM points attract i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png McCarthy, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Rabon and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Bobridge to push on.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3t-fourridersclearwith1kmleft_zps41c2ad69.jpg

An interesting group of riders emerge including i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Wallays, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/kng_zpsafcfbe9d.png Van den Hugenhaben, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Burghardt, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Mancuso, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Tamouridis, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Gilbert and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3u-RabonclearasCunegomakesasneakymove_zpsbeac4f08.jpg

This is soon neutralised as they go through the prime with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Rabon ahead. KoM holder i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pro_zpsc5cfa503.png Vanendert attacks following the prime looking to go into the descent in the lead. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png McCarthy and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Bobridge are on his tail.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3v-Vanendertalso_zps2c429cd4.jpg

There is a lip before the descent and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Bobridge steams past with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Nibali looking to go with the Australian.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3w-Boboagain_zpse79ba0d6.jpg

13km left and these two have been joined by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png McCarthy.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3x-Fourclearondescent_zps029c9a2b.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Passalacqua leads the pack of about 60 containing all the favourites behind.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3y-Venchiocomebacktofront_zps456861d8.jpg

7km to go and they have been reeled in.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3z-fourreeledin_zpsb0865388.png

A quick check on the favourites and we can see i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Cunego, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Hagen, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pearl.png Bakelandts, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Ponzi, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Van Garderan and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Sagan all present near the front.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3za-Favsnearfront_zps7f83dab2.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Caruso tries to nip off the front once again with 5.5km left.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3zb-Carusogoes_zps741c7a70.jpg

He is a good descender and will enjoy the little last 3km uphill sprint. However i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Venchi reel the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Wiggle wriggler in, but there goes the Luxembourg championship jersey.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3zc-Schlecklaunches_zpscb4b9551.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Schleck puts in a big attack.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/MG2013/ProTour/3zd-SchleckindistanceasCunegoresponds_zps50da6029.jpg

Stage result
We do get some gaps today, Schleck of course was supreme but a good day for the favourites with that monster day to Chieti to come. Lotto and Vespa do espiecially well to get two guys in the lead positions.

GC
Sagan hangs on to second place behind Schleck and his powerful team. We still have a stack of riders in the same time behind the riders who have taken bonuses - but that is quite usual in these hilly affairs.

Points
You'd fancy stage 4 is a sprinters affair so they will get the chance to snatch the points jersey. Sagan will wear it for tomorrow.

Mountains
Delage narrowly failed to take the KoM jersey outright. You know the score with jersey rights the first to get it keeps it in the case of a tie. WT points of course are shared. McEvoy moves up in this with Sinkeldam only able to take a single point today.

Youth
Sagan winning the race would have been a stretch - how about the Youth jersey? He lost a small amount of time to TvG and teammate Di Maggio here but impressively finished alongside Ulissi. Guldhammer did nothing but gained over the attacking Bobridge and McCarthy who look keen.

Teams
Our first look at the teams classification. It's a tight one between Vespa and Wiggle, you'd expect these two to be prominent being the two best pure Italian teams in the world.
