Preparation races
MartijnVDD
Hi guys,

I was wondering if someone could provide me with a list of traditional preparation races for bigger races as far as they exist.

E.g. Dauphiné Libéré / Tour de Suisse => Tour de France

Also, do sprinters use the same preparation as climbers?
And which are usually the first races of the season for sprinters, climbers etc.?

Thanks in advance!

This is what we got so far:
Spoiler
Milano-San Remo: Paris-Nice / Tirreno-Adriatico
Ronde van Vlaanderen, Paris-Roubaix: Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde
Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège: Vuelta a Pais Vasco
Giro d'Italia: Giro del Trentino / Tour de Romandie
Tour de France: Tour of California / Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré / Tour de Suisse / Ster ZLM Tour (Sprinters) / Route du Sud / National Championships
Vuelta a España: Vuelta a Burgos / Eneco Tour
World Championships: Vuelta a España

Giro del Trentino -> Giro d'Italia

Paris - Nice, Tirreno - Adriatico -> Milano - San Remo

Vuelta a Pais Vasco -> Ardennes Classics.

E3 Harelbeke, 3Daagse Panne - Koksijde -> Ronde van Vlaanderen

Most riders start their season between half january and half February in races like Tour Down Under, Etoile de Besseges, Trofeo Mallorca or the Volta de Algarve.

Tour de Romandie is also considered a preparation race for the Giro d'Italia.

Edit: And there's the Ster ZLM toer which was used by most sprinters this year as preparation to the Tour de France.

Edit2: And let's not forget that the Vuelta is used by many riders as preparation for the World Championships.

Route du Sud is also sometimes used as preparation for Tour de France for riders who couldn't make it to Dauphiné or had to abandon early there.
National championships are also a preparation race for TDF, to some extent. Especially the NC ITT/TDF prologue (works for NC held on the last week-end of June).

I would not follow this plan, if you dont have really good side-preparation. Cool
I'll be back

Trentino is too tiring to do as preparation for LBL, most do Amstel and maybe Fleche. And ToB isn't the best warm up for the Worlds at all. Not enough hard racing.

Do riders actually use a complete stage race just for one Ardennes Classic?
I'd say they ride one stage race (Vuelta a Pais Vasco) in preparation of the Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne AND Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

Trentino - Nibali - 2nd in LBL 2012
ToB - Cavendish - 1st in WCRR 2011
was my thinking

The worlds is usually much harder than last year's lame course though.

It's not like Nibali was clearly too tired in the last 15 kms in Liege. Pfft
