Yep..i have reed it..and seen both. Yes Tarkovski version was much..much better. Tarkovksi was really something..also If you see and like solaris..there is another one what you should see "Stalker"..there is blenty more..but others "Ivan childhood" and "Mirror" is bit hard to follow..
Somethimes it's great to see movie where director have lot of time to shoot. Not has now use to shaky handcam and greazy-fast montage.

problem is I've never even heard of Tarkovski. I've read the book by Stanisław Lem and loved it. I'll try to find a copy of the movie. but it's going to be hard.

He is a kind of russian Kurosawa... He totaly different movies compared to fellow directors and lot of critics (soviet union) just hated him. But he doesn't cared about this..he just stayed in own world and dont rush with general needs. And result was he is well known outside his own homeland. Even big names like Bergman and Kurosawa had sayd that they admire that man. |

The greatest film I've ever watched at the cinema has been the first Lord of the Rings - the sheer suspense was incredible, and the first time experience was edge of the seat stuff. Out of the cinema, the atmosphere wasn't nearly as good, but at the cinema, it was simply incredible.
For some strange reason, I can hardly think of any movies at the moment. The only ones which pop into my head are Green Mile as it is a superbly executed piece, Zulu, because it's Britain at its best, Monty Python's Life of Brian because it's the funniest film of all time, and the Italian Job, if only for the line, "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!" Love it

strangely enough, I didn't find it very funny. ask anyone around here what they think of it. "meh...."
ask what they think of the Holy Grail....you'll immediatelly get answered with a bunch of quotes from the movie. we all love it.

In England, the Life of Brian was the voted the funniest film of all time. And yes, it was a hard toss up for me between the Holy Grail, which I should have mentioned. Its a great film, especially the well... I want to list to many things, but the introductory scene (and the opening credits at that) are just superb. The discussion about the coconuts is absolutely hilarious.
The 6 Pythons were truly great comic geniuses. They made a lot of rubbish in the Flying Circus, but the good stuff was just in its own level. And they were British, which makes it even better (in fact, how many great comedians aren't British (or Irish))

I remember how one of my teachers (brilliant man. famous throughout europe in his department of work) who taught us everything about business and human relations (all practical, nothing theoretical) always said you can detect if a person has a sense of humor in one simple step:
show them monty python's "the fish slapping dance" skit. and see if the laugh out loud.
I sure did

I remember watching that, hilarious. But for something better, watch the Gumbies, which are pure comic gold here:

It's so funny, even Michael Palin laughs - now that's funny

Take your time..Tarkovski can be quite depressive somethimes. But one I promise...you will remember that movie...
Talking about Kurosawa, you father have exelent taste. "Seven samurays" one when I was kid I was waching it...I just love it..now almost 20 years later...I bought it..and still it was great.
Monthy python's are the best. They beat any american comedian movie...so classy

seven samurais. I've lost count of the times I've seen my father watching that movie.
funny you should mention Tartovski's film Stalker a few posts back. a game was made based on that movie. it was in production for six years. it was made fun of because no one believed it would ever come out. finally, a couple of months ago it was released. if people took a look at it, they would definitely stop calling PCM "bugged".
something tells me I'm going to bed reading Solaris tonight.

was Life of Brian, the one where there was a kind of time machine in a church,
if so i didn't find that funny at all, i have loads of favourite films, like
Italian job (the original of course)
Armageddon (can't spell)
and others that i can't remember, they're obviously not as good as i thought |

Btw. pretty good choises...
competitor to Schindler list ..can be another geto movie "Pianist"
apocalypse now is absolute top for Vietnam war movies (once i read the based novel.."Black heart" (first anounced 1920-s.). That was first time I ever so that how well can screenwrighter handle old (out of actuality) book to great movie.
Prison movie competitor for Papillon can only be Alan Parker's "Midnight express" |

actually, Guido, it's "The Heart Of Darkness". not meaning that the heart is black, but "being in the heart of something" meaning they're deep into the something. in this case, "darkness", meaning both the jungle and the human mind in times of war. also, the book is VERY old. it's from 1899!!
have you ever seen "apocalypse now redux"? it's the director's cut, meaning it has a few more scenes that had to be removed from the movie when it was released, otherwise it would be too long. about 40 minutes more film I think.
in the original, the final scenes seem forced. the things that are done seem to not make that much sense.
in the "Redux" version, with the added scenes, it makes perfect sense.

I'm bit shamed about Conrad bad knowledge..
And yes I own both versions..this movie I kind of doping movie. Lets take almost first scene when Martin Sheen wakes in hotel...this was reality: guy was drunk, under narcotics and naked. He realy crashed the mirror with hand...Coppola sayd that crew was pit sceared that Martin gonna attack them. Later on Martin had some small heart attack and they stoped all project for few months.
Explosive- they had taken a conteiners of explosion effects with them..and thought that this will be enough thrue the end. After few weeks all was gone. |

I had no idea he was actually stoned. I do know that the filming took forever.
Lawrence Fishburne was 15 when it started, 18 when it finished.
