you've been on vacation, so:
ASO has been pitching that idea for days now. nobody really wants it. it would mean a boost for cycling in 3/4 countries and the opposite everywhere else.

i don't understand how it would work anyway
would there be a lot more teams in the Tour, would these national teams, replace wildcards etc.
or would it just be national teams on their own, any of the ways i think it is a bad idea

the idea is that instead of the regular sponsored teams, there would be, for instance, the italian national team. or the spanish national team.
the positive points
- fans would identify themselves with "their" team unlike now when most identify themselves with one single rider;
- supposedly it's a deterrent against doping because if anyone were to be caught it would be to huge shame of the country and not just "some team". in reality, the athletes dope in the olympics and such, where national teams compete;
the negative points
- less exposure for "sponsored" teams, therefore less sponsors coming into cycling;
- the teams would have to cooperate. all of a sudden Valverde and Contador in the same team for the Tour? yeah, right...as if that is going to turn out nicely. etc.;
-only a few countries would be able to field full teams. we would have the "Luxembourg/Switzerland/Britain team", for example. |

What I read today was that the idea was to have a mix of national teams and sponsored teams. |

that's not what Patrice Clerc was pitching a few days ago...
I'm not saying it isn't what he's on about now though. |

Plus less money in the sport due to a lack of sponsors, even further domination by some countries, and a dent into inter-racial links.
But apart from, seems fine to me

inter-racial links? how many non-white riders are there now? |

Inter-racial means: "Links between a group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution: the German race."
Sorry for not being so clear, that's what I was aiming at. If we had a just French team or just German team, I would be angry if we Brits lost to them

I'd be confused. I'd want every single team to lose at the same time |

considering the amount grand tour stage wins England have, I'd shut up if I were you
EDIT: besides, I'm happy to be watching out national tour that is about to start with an enormous amount of possible contenders, including guys from ProTour teams and all the top Continental ones

I see...we get Koldo Gil and Damiano Cunego...
but I couldn't care less about that. all I want is close racing. which fortunately is practically guaranteed
especially with a TT on the last day. |

the nearest i get is Sheffield which is about 1hr away, but when i stay with my grandma and grandad in Spain, a tour goes up their road, so all you have to do is walk to the end of the road
it gets all the Spanish riders like Mayo, Valverde etc. as it is in a valley

all I got was a stage of the Volta going past my street last year. no emotion, though. it was about 2km after the start of the stage... |

yes but i've only ever seen that race once as i have only been over there at the same time as the race once
at least you get to see some racing, you can hardly call the tour of britain racing, unless the big names that occasionally come actually try, last year Boonen did nothing at all apart from the last stage, he tried on one stage but completley messed his sprint up
many riders are put off it because everyone says it is the most dangerous bike race in the world, as all the cars are on the road, no roads are closed fully etc
but this isn't really July news, so i apologize for that
