What about Francais des Juex. Isn't that gambling.
The ASO just want to make a stand against the UCI. If they don't like the way the UCI works then quit the pro tour. The TDF etc. will still be great races without the Pro Tour. |

french law states there can only be a certain number of gambling houses in france. either 2 or 3, can't remember. that law even states which companies those are.
FDJ is one of them.
by the way, that law is from the mid-1800s

There is a battle of powers in cycling. UCI vs ASO, and Unibet.com is unfortunately in the middle.
UCI imposed Pro Tour league. And ASO look it as a threat, because all Pro Tour teams are allow to participate in the big events and these event organizers must accept them.
I think this have an advantage because teams turn to be more profissional and sponsors extend the contracts because the big initial investement.
However as you saw in Giro there were some teams that were just walking because it wasn't for their major interest. (this is the point of the ASO)
Conclusion: Who has the right to choose the participants?
I agree on both points, but the thing is that ASO above all wants the power to say "we choose who participates. if we don't like a team, we won't invite them and they'll never be big"
before the protour, every year 2 or 3 FRENCH teams would be invited to the Tour that would make everyone go "what the f***????"
then those teams would get big sponsor contracts because they participated in the tour, and the french just kept helping each other.
it would be the equivalent of Auber 93 being invited for this year's tour.

Thats the thing. The Giro did make great choices, but the ASO want to help French teams get into the pro tour.
As most of us know 95% of the time when a french time is invited we don't even see them on the TV, so why invite them. |

To be honest, some French are great riders. However France isn't the only nation with good riders. |

yes, but if they could freely choose whichever teams they wanted, they'd choose a few french teams that no-one would even think of choosing.
this way, only choosing a few, they choose the bigger ones.
Agritubel, though has been chosen.
there are arguably better teams, but it's a perfectly acceptable decision

are you sure?
Liberty Seguros is a very small portuguese team (the biggest portuguese one, but small in the big scheme of things) that has never entered the Tour
don't you mean another team?

Glad that cleared everything up. I think the two thingy's (ASO and USI) need to work together to try and get cyclings reputation back, (just clear everyone who took doping and put them on exstreme caution) then just dont tell anyone and everything is a ok. |

Ivan Basso has received a 24 month ban. That means he will be out until the 28th of October, 2008. |
