General Ignorance Quiz
stuartmcstuart
I actually hope to do not too badly here, since I'm a geographer/geomatmatician, but if I do horribly then I wont be surprised either. Didn't have a clue for number four, but I think I've got at least question 5 correct. I better have, or I'll have a lot of swotting up to do before my exam! Wink

Well, 17 of you participated GrinGrinGrin, and you in total got -197 points.

Worst off were three people SidGarcia, Balaverde and A_Schleck, who not only got no answers, but fell into 4 traps, giving them -40 points

Here's your table of results:

Question 1: What's the name of the tallest mountain in Europe?

It's not Mont Blanc, if that's what you put. These people fell for the trap

At 5,633 meters (18,481 ft) Mount Elbrus, in Russia, is the tallest mountain in Europe. It is part of the Caucasian mountains which are considered to be the border between Europe and Asia. During ancient times, Mount Elbrus was known as Strobilus and it was believed to be the location where Zeus had Prometheus chained to a rock. The highest summit of Mount Elbrus was first climbed in 1874 by F. Crauford Grove.
Mont Blanc is just 4,808 m, and is the highest mountain in Western Europe.

Question 2: What's the name of tallest mountain in the world?

Nearly everyone said Everest. They were of course, wrong.

Only stuartmcstuart and kida knew the real answer, which is Mauna Kea, and is 10,200 m tall, whilst, Everest stands at 8,848 m tall.

The key word here is tallest - the tallest mountain is measured from the bottom of the mountain to the top, whilst highest is measured from sea level to summit. Over half of Mauna Kea, in Hawaii, is under the sea.

Question 3: Which animal is the second biggest killer of humans?

Nobody got this one, and a lot of you said mosquito - that's the biggest one. Another bunch of you said hippo - a good answer, but not right I'm afraid. It is the African mammal which kills more humans than any over.

In fact, very surprisingly, in second place comes an animal that's wiped over a billion people off the map, and has spread death across whole continents and kept all in fear. I give you, the marmot

www.bcadventure.com/adventure/wilderness/animals/marmot_m_wigg.jpg

They are small members of the squirrel family, who cough people to death - you heard me, cough to death. The bobac variety found in Mongolia are particularly susceptible to the lung infection caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. You may know it as bubonic plague.
They spread it by coughing on their neighbours fleas, who went onto rats, who gave it, ultimately, to us, giving rise to all the great plagues which have swept across Asia and Europe.

So next time you see a Marmot, steer clear - it's more dangerous than you think Wink

Question 4: How do lemmings die?

Balaverde and A_Schleck fell into the trap of saying they fell off cliffs, committing mass suicide.

Disney helped evolve this myth in 1958, by showing lemmings committing suicide, working on a myth already seen by 1908, in the works of Arthur Mee.

The best answer would be to say that lemmings have a four year boom-and-bust cycle, leading to surges in population as lemmings can have 80 offspring in a year. This lemmings are forced into unfamiliar territory to find food due to overpopulation, until the pile up against cliffs and other obstacles. The lemmings keep coming, panic and violence ensues, and accidents happen - but no suicide Wink

all decided to say they thought this was flat. This is of course, preposterous - no civilisation has thought the Earth was flat since 4 BC, and only reemerged in the 19th century, when an eccentric Englishman (Samuel Birley Rowbotham) put forward the widely discredited 'Zetetic Astronomy: A Description of Several Experiments which Prove that the Earth is not a Globe'.

Columbus also did not set sail to prove the Earth was round, the false text saying this being from 1828, in "The Life and Times of Christopher Colombus", written by Washington Irving

A society still remains for people who believe the Earth is flat, and can be found at https://www.theflatearthsociety.org

Tune in next week, as we dive further into the realms of general ignorance Grin

Thats really how you win this kind of quiz. For example, on question 5, I got bonus points for explaining how the earth isnt even spherical, its a Geoid. This what I do for my masters degree so I knew a bit about this...Wink

1) Elbrus isn't part of the Urals, it's part of Caucasus.
