Bauke Mollema is a class act:
-winner circuito montanes (by winning the hardest mountain stage and finishing 2nd in the TT)
-3rd in Tour l'Ain (just behind Gadret and Turpin)
and now possibly winner of Tour l'Avenir.
He's having a great season.
About time a Rabobank Continental would win the Tour l'Avenir:
2004 - Thomas Dekker leader, but crashed out
2005 - Kai Reus in 2nd position with the hardest stages to come, crashed out
2006 - Gesink 2nd after 25 year old Duenas

Herreda won the stage yesterday, Mollema remains leader.
Ubelievable really, I read an article about how he started cycling in 2004. He had a pink rusty bike and had no good cycling clothes. They local team had to learn him everything, from material to steering and such, and within 3 years this guy wins the Circuito Montañes and probably Tour l'Avenir. |

Mollema took more time on his opponents by simply riding away on the last climb, impressive! Today is the last stage and he's sure of victory. |

remember when Bak won the Tour de l'Avenir and he was supposed to be Denmark's next GC hope?
meaning: don't get your hopes up. take the guys who are the world's best at any point, and you'll see that half of them didn't impress at all in the junior categories

Has anything changed? Bak's still a great talent
But yes, I know. In Chris Anker Sørensen we do have a new Bjarne Riis |

he's a good talent. but he'll never be the GC rider he was supposed to be

you'll never learn, will you??
Riis could time trial

I've honestly never thought that Bak would become a (good) GC-rider. He might win a few stages once in a while, but that's it.
Chris will learn to time trial - wait and see |

Thats a shame, I was hoping Sorenson would be a clean rider.

Bak was 25 were most of his opponents where 20/19/21. It says much more who did well the entire season and what age they were. To me, Mollema, Boasson and Tony Martin are THE u23 riders of the season.
Bak also ONLY won the Tour l'Avenir that year. While for instance Mollema won Circuito Montanes (with mountain finish up to 2000 meter!) and finished 3rd in Tour l'Ain, between pro's as Gadret and co.
I'm very very certain Mollema will make it. For Steensen I don't know, he has showed more this season, so he must be capable of doing well at the pro's, but I don't have a good view on foreign U23 racers (except the very world top)as I cannot follow their homeland races. (I can't follow EVERY race ) |

you never heard me say that Bak would be a GC rider. however, the hype at the time was quite a bit. which is VERY stupid. which is what I was poking fun at.
the point I was making, if you try reading carefully is that no matter how good anyone is in youth categories or in his first years as a professional, you simply cannot judge how good he will be in the future, while a very big number of riders who show enormous potential never deliver.

Yeah and you have some who have enormous potential and keep up and actually do break through. Just check the podium or top 5 of the last 10 years. There are more riders who DID break through then who didn't.
Lars Bak was awfully lucky in the edition he won, because Thomas Dekker was the leader in the race, but literally fell out. And the last couple of days the race was shit (no mountains or medium mountains unlike this year or last year). |
