they're my hopes too, but I'd consider it a small miracle if Barbosa managed to stay with Azevedo today or on the Torre climb. and even if he manages to do it, he's going to lose about two minutes to Azevedo in the time trial. |

Well, I prefer Azevedo to Candido, because Azevedo is riding on Benfica, And the team seems to be in a great form.

heh, I just realised that the average gradient of the final climb is only 7.5%
but without the two downhill sections of 400m each, it's an average of 10.9%
there's definitely going to be fireworks now |

Candido continues in yellow, Jimenez 2nd and Azevedo goes 3rd 22 seconds away. He can win that seconds in TT, but I think he will attack again in Torre. Let's see if Candido win another stage tomorrow or Monday...

he probably will win. he's a ProTour quality sprinter in a continental team. he doesn't have much opposition in this race when it comes to sprints. |

Agreed. Just Parede Grillo and one or two more. Benitez is out of form.

yup. BenÃtez was excellent in the early season, but now he's faded dramatically. |

It was like André Vital...He won in Torre 2 months ago and today he lost the contact in the start of the final climb.

Benitez is nowhere to be seen. High hopes from everybody at the start of the Volta and now, nobody ever sees him.
As for Cândido, the man is one of the best all round sprinters in existence, when I saw Jimenez and then Azevedo crossing the line I was thinking "Whoa, I hope Azevedo can get more time out from Barbosa". The instance I finish this thought there I see Barbosa in a sprint getting his 3rd place.
Azevedo's effort was a bit risky, but doable, for the 6 seconds he won over Barbosa. He can probably make it up in the time trial and/or any other attack in the Alto da Torre, of Tuesday's stage finish, of +2000 meters. That will be truly exciting.
And Jimenez in 2nd overall, watch out... Blanco isn't over yet.
Great race by Cardoso too...
I'll post full standings in a while.

Dan_Grr, are you portuguese or just a guy who is watching the race?
Well, like Vidal Fitas said, this climb was a sort ofCandido's way, and he'll get much more trouble in Torre. Let's wait.

I'm portuguese
I don't think a lot of people out there are interested in Volta, although it's a very old race. Just like I'm not interested in say, Tour of Denmark, not because I don't like Danish people (I want to visit Scandinavian countries someday) but because their whole tour is boring as hell. All the stages are flat with one or two time trials in the middle time, thats it.
Here we have flat, hilly and mountainous terrain mixed up with quite some cobblestone sections mixed with all of that, which atest to the hardness of the terrain, the riders, and the excitment of the race.
This was a mountainous terrain, but not very extense into the climbs, so that's probably why Barbosa managed. Even so, it's quite remarkable him managing to make it. But tuesday he will be in great difficulty.
Just look at today's stage and tuesday's stage. At least it's not a very long race, although it more then compensates in sheer awesomeness:
Today's stage (Saturday)
Tuesday's stage

even the danish agree with that:

spot on. on the climb to Torre he'll struggle. add to that the fact that both Blanco and Azevedo are much better than him on the time trial and you get why I'm saying he doesn't have much chance.
but of course, it's cycling, so anything can happen |

Absolutely agreed. What interest does have in watching a stage with 200kms with the peloton chasing the breakaway to a mass sprint? At least we have an awesome race.
Just looks bad not to have great teams participating...
9 or 8 years ago, we saw Beloki, the old Liquigas, Euskatel (a team I would love to see in Volta), Mapei-Quickstep, Lampre with great riders, Cofidis and so on...
