I'm not sure this is the place, but I thought I'd post it, since the photos remind me of the defining moments that I have watched in cycling.

I was young back then. very young. but I was amazed at it. for you see..I wasn't that young that I couldn't understand the immensity of the moment.

picture the moment:

Miguel Indurain is the big, unflappable, powerful rider that has dominated recently and won the last five tours. there seems to be no shaking him.
Berzin, Ugrumov, Bugno, Chiapucci, Rominger, Pantani,Zulle, Riis, Jalabert. all have tried, none has even managed to slightly shake him.
he always seemed at ease and able to follow everything.

it was 1996 and he seemed destined to win what would be a record 6th tour in a row.

first real mountain stage, and only halfway through....this happens.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=VnKhhfX5tEQ

you can't see it in the video, but I distinctly remember Riis' words "we couldn't even attack him for a few seconds...we just stood there not believing what we were seeing...it was as if the sun had not risen or some unlikely event. finally we managed to wake up and ride faster"

for you see....no one saw it coming. most didn't even think it was possible.

the first reaction I remember from the local TV commentator was "Indurain has had a mechanical failure"

Isso you definatly have strong backround following cycling..First sports event what I remember wached was 1986 mexico football wc final..
In cycling I am kind of newborn..I have to be creatful to cyanide..when I got from friend CYM 3 (he sayd try it ..maybe you gonna like it-if someone is right then he was)..here all started. Now -has problematic cycling is those days this is sport nr. 1 for me.

as I said, I was VERY young. oldest thing I remember in terms of sports is Senna's death live.

issoisso: Actually, that "episode" with Indurain is one of my first cycling memories, too. Didn't really care about it until then.

Ooh, what a moment. My first memory must be Hautacam the same year:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDCGSs...DCGSsOaLDA

I remember Riis going to the back of the group looking for Indurain and Leblanc, then making the move that sealed his victory. Still love this, even though he cheated

For the danish guys there's a video with commentary (Mader/Leth):

since we're into historic moments, how about the 1989 Tour that was won by 8 seconds?

https://youtube.com/watch?v=AyvwtOQYQ-E

the Tour that was won by someone (won't want to name and spoil the suspense for those who don't know the story) due to innovative material.

Roo's posted Riis attack was terrific..(yes i know about EPO)..
How well he controlled everything..like Lance philosophy- ok it's time to go..who can follow ,they follow.
Lot in tactics are also changed- those days they pushed so hard...how long they can take it. Now they calculate more: Ok I can follow with this tempo thrue the end,I have to set own pace to limit loses.

I like this thread. Great moments, and in some way, it really makes me forget all about doping for once. Even though that we know all those guys from back then (and now) are doped, cycling is still a really beautiful sport, full of great moments.

But back then i suppose the doctors called it enhancing your performance. maybe the cyclists didnt realise it was doping. I dont think Riis should have been taken off.
