Doping in the Giro 07
CrueTrue
According to German media have reported that the "Oil For Drugs" (aka. the Santuccione case) doping investigation have been launched again by CONI. It contains 14.000 documents (the Puerto-affair has 8000 documents), and in these documents you will - according to ADR - that Di Luca used Santuccione as his doctor, and that he also refers to him as "his friend". Furthermore, these documents should accordingly include a telephone conversation between Di Luca and Santuccione in which Di Luca asks Santuccione how to blur certain drugs in the doping control.

Mazzoleni is also a part of this. There's also a telephone conversation with him. In that he mentions a new non-traceable drug which his girlfriend, Elisa Basso -- sister of Ivan Basso - was supposed to get for him in England.

Etorre Tori, the accuser of CONI, says that he will be done with looking through the documents at the end of this year - and by that time, several charges will have started.

For some strange reason you kind of expect this every time after a Grand Tour. A big surprise is pulled off, and you find that doping is the only reason why.
Such a shame, it was nice to see Di Luca silence his critics, although is he did it by doping, I hope he gets the full force of the law thrwon at him. You'd think riders would start to learn and try and clean up this sport

in italy has anything been done? not so far. so they still have to learn. and after that, I guess it's to spain, where despite Puerto, not much has happened.

now about Di Luca and Mazzoleni. honestly, did anyone not see this coming?
especially after what happened with Paolini.

I won't be very surprised if a lot more well know italians are in on this. ...well...I'll keep quiet, since I don't have any proof.

What's your source Mike? I haven't seen any mention of this in Eurosports, Velonews or Cyclingnews.com. Perhaps something will come out tomorrow?

it's what cycling gets for pursuing dopers. other sports just sweep it under the rug. remember what happened when at the start of the Puerto thing, it was reported Barcelona, Sevilla , Valencia and Real Madrid along with Rafael Nadal and others were no doubt involved? where did that go?

conveniently away, that's where it went...

My primary source is Feltet.dk, Denmarks biggest cycling website. They refer to "German media such as ADR". I'm sure it will be reported on other websites too, soon. We can't conclude anything yet. After all, this is only rumours - but then again, Di Luca was excluded from the TdF in 2004 or 2005 (I'm not sure, but it happened a few years ago), because of this doping investigation. So it's not just pure fabrication.

About the other sports, I agree completely. There's doping in a lot of other sports, but cycling and athletics are the only sports where you really try do something about it. Sepp Blatter did ask for the Puerto-documents a week ago, though. So something might happen soon.

I suppose the main reason why the spotlight is on athletics and cycling is because doping has such a huge effect on performance. In other sports, it may have some, but ability and skill related fitness (fitness which cannot be improved) pay a far more pivotal role

why are the UCI and ProTour not hiring these doctors?? if they are involved in something like doping then it can only be for the money. if the UCI put all sponsor money into anti-doping they could at least stay up to date with counter measures. any loss in money would easily be made up for sponsors gained when eveyone knows the sport is clean.

dissapointing to see this appear again as i thought after all the admissions and investigations the bad seeds had finally been excluded. Sad now there will always be a wonder if someone performs really well.

at a lasts resort what if doping was made legal controlled by the UCI, then at least for a few years we can know everyone is on the same field.

Uh..uh terrible. I wanna say :thats why he didnt crack..but I wont to that before that news get confirmation.

Could your roughly translate it?

It says that ricco, simoni, di luca and mazzoleni is involved in a old doping case, and CONI will report back i few days.

And now cyclingnews reports that Bob Stapleton has said about Gonchar (who was withdrawn from the Giro team for abnormal blood levels) that they'll make a decision on the next few days about firing him or not.

Also that in any case, it's his last season with the team and he was never intended to ride this year's TDF.

things look bleak for Serhiy...

the official explanation was he had a cold....Gonchar hadn't read that and told the journalists it was because he had tendonitis.

obviously lousy excuses. that put the suspicion on him right away.

after a few days, the team announced that the truth was he had been suspended by T-Mobile, since the team's own doping tests apparently showed that despite his values being within the allowed limits, they were far from his normal values.

now, the team says they will evaluate the new results (whatever those might be), and then make a decision on whether or not to fire him immediately.

Suddenly the words of last year's Tour de France commentator ring in my mind "it's unbelievable how anyone, let alone Gonchar, can stand such a huge gear for so long"
