It sucks big time.
I mean, the ProTour was the perfect format of the Pro Cycling Calendar. It was a great feature that teams could get promoted and relegated, but through some stupid bureaucracy these rules weren't even followed as Unibet weren't even allowed to the ProTour races. It's like there was no real foundation in this format, eventhough it's perfect in theory. Now, the ProTour is nothing without the GTs and apparently almost every single April classics aren't going to feature on the PT calendar either anymore.

I would like to see the big teams boycott the ASO races. As much as it would hurt to do that, i would think they would have to accept the pro tour.

they go there every year, so there's no reason they would stop going now.

Pro Tour in its current format sucks balls anyway. It makes no sense to force Euskaltel to ride Paris-Roubaix, to force team to go to Plouay, or to have Bouygues in the Vuelta. It doesn't make more sense to get a classification to compare sprinters with GT riders and classics men.
Teams are interested in being part of the Pro Tour, just because it makes them sure they'll get a TDF spot. No TDF = (almost) no interest in Pro Tour.
And stop saying ASO quitted the Pro Tour to get Agritubel in the TDF. Agritubel fits there, they're the best French Continental Pro team. I can't see any other CP French team being in TDF. Don't kid me with Bretagne - Armor Lux or Roubaix, please.
Nobody complains about smaller Italian or Spanish teams being in Giro or Vuelta, what's wrong with Agritubel in TDF ?

It's the same for most contiental teams : remove their best riders and they will suck.
Feillu got top 5 and won a couple of races in the Contiental calendar too. Vogondy behaved well a couple of times as well. And I didn't check all their results. |

I agree with you that the current format needs to be tweeked. I think the pro tour should be like this:
-When you get a pro tour license i think you should be able to compete in any of the pro tour events. (When i say events i mean the pro tour events of say this year, not the new calendar) This would allow your team to compete in any of the events they wanted to, and they could skips events that don't suit them, say Euskatel in P-R. And when a team decides not to ride a race for any particualar reason, that slot can then be used on a wild card team that the organizers choose.
And in cases when all pro tour teams are there, the race organizers can still add an extra wild card spot if they want to.
I think promotion and relegation is also an accept that i would look at but that is for another time and date.
I would think both parties would be happy with this, because teams have that guarantee of getting in the races they want, and the organizers would have to ability to invite teams they would want.

I agree with that, but with at least three things to be tweaked again :
- some races have nothing to do in the Pro Tour : Plouay, Poland, etc.
- there are too many teams in the Pro Tour. 16 to 12 would be enough, let the other spots be for wild-cards
- a minimum of participations would be mandatory. A team shouldn't be Pro Tour and withdraw their participation to all events if they wanted to, which would be case with your system. |
