Stage 4 - ITT

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/7-1.jpg

Arguably the most important stage in the entire Tour de San Luis, the individual time trial will truly sort out who is in contention for the top 10. Most of those who are in contention for a podium place are considered favourites today, and it seems unlikely that anyone can bridge the time to Knees, as he is an above average time trialist.

As for our team, we don’t hold out much hope for anyone doing well at all today. Dekkers currently sits in 7th, after he gained time for 2nd place yesterday. Our best hope comes from Delfosse, who we hope can crack the top 20. Even then, he might struggle on the hill. As it happens, Delfosse was the third man down the ramp and we hope we can put in a rather competitive time.

Unfortunately he never found his rhythm on the uphill and this continued through to the end. After he had finished he was a whole 31 seconds behind Engoulvent’s time of 26’41”. There goes our only real hope for a top 20.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/7-2.jpg

Delfosse comes through with an incredibly disappointing time.

Scheirlinkx was 41” behind Engoulvent. Barbe looked good after the climb, but the finale proved to be too much and he was ultimately 51” behind Engoulvent.

The first real favourite to cross the line was Rory Sutherland, who managed to beat Engoulvent’s time, setting his own time of 26’31”. This was a really good time from the UnitedHealtcare cyclist, but this did not last long.

In quick succession the time was beaten again and again. Kessiakoff (Astana) beat his time by a single second and then soon afterwards Bulgarelli (Farnese Vini) set the best time by another second. This was remarkable because he isn’t actually a time trialist.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/7-3.jpg

Bulgarelli puts several time trialists to shame.

The times continued to tumble, with De Waele coming through as our best rider with 27’04”, sitting an unremarkable 24th at the time he crossed the line. At this point the competition started to heat up, as Froome (Sky) and Barbosa (Tavira) both cut the time at the half way mark, and Froome set a new best time by another 3”.

Then the news came over the radio – Traksel had set a new best time after the first climb, by a massive 12 seconds! My head starts spinning – does Traksel really have a chance at this? Surely he can’t lose that much time over the line?!

Sure enough, Traksel came through 3 seconds slower than De Waele.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/7-4.jpg

Traksel gets my hopes up, then dashes them.

From this point it was only a matter of watching the real GC contenders tear each other apart. Both Jufre (Astana) and Zwianski (UHC) set times up the hill that almost matched Traksel’s effort, but both of them are capable of time trialing. Jufre set the new best by a whoping 15”, but Zwianski, the very next rider through, beat him by another 2”. Joly, following Zwianski, beat his time by yet another second.

Then Knees crossed the line with the best time, managing to come through a full 15” faster than Joly.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/7-5.jpg

Knees wins the time trial and maintains the leader’s jersey.

Nothing should stop Knees from winning the overall now. We came out of the day quite terribly – Stallaert and Dekkers were second last and last respectively.

Stage 5

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/8-1.jpg

The second summit finish of the tour involves an 8.4km climb that averages 7% - the Mirador del Sol. There’s no reason why Knees can’t perform strongly here, but it is the best chance that all the other GC contenders have for taking a stage or trying to put time into each other. Other favourites include Joly (currently in the mountain jersey), Zwizanski (now the undisputed leader of UnitedHealthcare after his excellent performance in the time trial) and even non-GC contenders such as GC. For our part DeWaele will be looking to get himself into a breakaway and Traksel will be our protected rider, hoping he can stick with the favourites up the climb.

It took 20km for an 8 man group to form. The group was De Backer (Skil), Cardoso (Tavira), Randazzo (Miche), Buchácek (Whirlpool), Pirazzi (Colnago), Morajko (CCC Polsat), Cappelle (Veranda's) and our own Barbe. The group pulled out over a minute very quickly and that is when De Waele saw his opportunity. With Di Gregorio (Astana) and Furdi (Adria) he managed to bridge to the front group. It now consisted of 11 riders, including 2 of our own.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/8-2.jpg

De Waele lead the bridging attempted.

No one in the front group was happy with this new state of affairs and Cardoso was the first to attack. Barbe was forced to pull along the entire group to chase him down. He was caught, but this did not change anything. A long string of riders tried their own attacks: Furdi, Di Gregorio, Pirrazi and finally De Backer. All but the last of these attacks was pulled back.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/8-3.jpg

Cardoso attacks out of the lead group.

De Backer pulled out a4” gap and Barbe decided to attack to him, refusing to bring the group with him and abandoning De Waele to his own devices. De Waele’s plan to get into a successful breakaway had proven unsuccessful.

However, the Barbe and De Backer combination had only a minute by the time they got to the sprint point, and indeed they were caught just before the base of the climb. Veranda’s Willems and Saur-Sojasun were doing most of the work for S. Scheirlinckx and Joly respectively. Traksel is our new plan for the stage.

As the mountain started to rise Scheirlinckx jumped out from the peleton, seeking the mountain points. Traksel followed on his wheel and as soon as it finished, he attacked over the top. Joly and Knees followed.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/8-4.jpg

Traksel attacks and leads the race onto the mountain.

A gapped opened quickly as Saur stopped working and Sky was unwilling to pick up the pace. Zwizanski, Scheirlinckx and Jufre all attacked out from the peleton, but Jufre could not catch the other two. Knees could not keep pace with Joly, either.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/8-5.jpg

Joly dropped Knees in the steepest sections of the climb.

As the climb started to flatten out in the last two kilometres, the five lead riders had a chance to come together and it was just going to be a matter of who was best on the day.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/8-6.jpg

The front 5 riders come together in the final kilometre.

The acceleration for the final sprint began...

And Joly won a fantastic victory.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/8-7.jpg

Traksel held on for a magnificent third, a reward for his aggression. He also moved up into 5th place overall, though well behind the true GC riders. Though, with one mountain stage left to ride, it is questionable whether he can hold this position. De Waele also lead the pack in for 9th.

Stage 6

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/9-1.jpg

After the tough stage yesterday, today brings another mountainous stage that should sort out for sure who will be in the top 10. Traksel has a 5th place overall to defend, with Scheirlinckx being the only person who could realistically take that from him, as long as Traksel climbs decently. The two climbs are the 15.2km climb of the Alto de Nogoli and the 14.8km Cerra del Amago. There’s 14km of relatively flat terrain after the final climb of the day before the finish line, with a final kick up in the last kilometre before the finish line. The winner today will be a mountain climber. That means it really comes down to either Joly or Knees, yet again.

Breaks were forming all through the morning in the blistering 33 degree heat but finally after 37km, right before hitting the climb, a final group of 8 got away, including Delfosse.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/9-2.jpg

8 riders go clear, Delfosse amongst them.

At the base of the climb, 4 riders tried to bridge up to them – Di Gregorio (Astana), Moreno (Caja), Jarc (Adria) and Shmidt (TT1). The pack did not like the presence of these riders and accelerated to try to chase them down.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/9-3.jpg

4 riders try to bridge, but the pack doesn’t like this.

Over the top of the climb the pack was together and it was going to come down to a showdown on the final major climb of the tour.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/9-4.jpg

Sky leads the pack up the first climb of the day.

On the flat Mazzanti (Farnese) attacks alone, but can only pull out a maximum gap of 4’30”. By the time the group hits the base of the final climb of the day his lead has been reduced to 2’10”, and it is almost certain that he is not going to stay away. The GC riders want this victory.

As soon as the climb started to ramp up, Astana and Sky started working, and the numbers in the lead group dropped very quickly. None of our riders could keep pace as it went through the sections over 10%, with only 12 riders able to keep the pace. Knees, Joly, Sutherland, Jufre, Tiralongo, Zwianski and, unfortunately, Scheirlinckx were all up here.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/9-5.jpg

The lead group forms, and none of our riders make the cut.

Caja Rural lead the chase from those who were caught behind, but it made little difference as the front group accelerated to the top of the climb, and only 8 riders remain, including 3 Astana riders. Traksel tried to jump out of his group of 31 but couldn’t manage it at all.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/9-6.jpg

The lead group forms, and none of our riders make the cut.

As the front group goes under the 1km mark the road started to ramp up and Knees kicked out of it, with a devastating acceleration.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/9-7.jpg

Knees kicks with 1km to go.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/9-8.jpg

And no one can follow him.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/9-9.jpg

His third stage victory of the race, and his GC is secure.

Traksel came in 3’33” down on Knees, in 12th place. The climb was just too steep for him, but he did manage to kick in the final kilometre to secure this position. He dropped to 8th place in the GC, losing a lot of time to Scheirlinckx and Tiralongo.

Glad to hear it. Etoile and Tour Med, as well as the French semi-classics. Lots of warm-up races.

nice races, but you don't have really someone who can go up high in the mountains and get a good GC (I mean being good every day, like contador), hope you can buy one next season.

I'm also reading this. It's a good counter to my attempt at playing a smaller team (Saur-Sojasun) and watching Traksel beat Casper at every race.

Yeah I hope to have a decent climber next year, but it is rather difficult to find one that I can get at a good price, because I'm not sure what my budget for next year will be like - I guess it depends on my results in the classics.

Thanks. I'm surprised by that, Traksel is a great all-rounder but lacks the ability to climb mountains.

Stage 7

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/10-1.jpg

This is going to be a very easy day – three laps of an easy enough course. The climb isn’t steep at all. Traksel might try something in the finale, but it is highly unlikely. More likely, Dekkers will be sprinting.

A group of 7 formed early. The names were Petrov, Tsatevich, Zagar, Cesara, Barry, Herrada and Buchacek. They quickly pulled out a minute by the first mountain points and it was then that De Waele took his chance. He jumped from the group, taking Smolen and Lombardi with him. They manage to bridge by the sprint point.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/10-2.jpg

The front comes together.

With some very good riders in this group in the form of Petrov, Herrada and De Waele most of the riders in the group refused to work. Nevertheless, the gap slowly grew as only Tsatevich, Barry and Herrada worked. At the base of the second climb Petrov and De Waele took their chance and attacked out of the group.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/10-3.jpg

De Waele and Petrov attack out.

The two riders managed to pull out over a minute, before Petrov took his chance and attacked again. De Waele was still recovering from the previous attack and couldn’t follow with Petrov’s acceleration.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/10-4.jpg

Petrov goes it alone.

It took a long time for Petrov to be dragged back by the chasing peleton, but it was inevitable that it would happen. It becomes apparent that the pace is too high for Traksel to attack, so he just sits in and we wait for Petrov to be dragged back. With 15.8km to go, that happens and it is going to be a bunch sprint.

With only 1.5 to go Miyazawa (Farnese) opens up the sprint with De Haes on his wheel, followed by a number of the Caja Rural riders. Dekkers jumps on Arashiro’s wheel toward the front.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/10-5.jpg

The sprint opens.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/10-6.jpg

De Haes tries to go around.

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/10-7.jpg

It will be a photo finish... who has won it?

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Landbouwkrediet/10-8.jpg

Miyazawa holds on for the win!

Dekkers managed to jump around Arashiro right on the line and came in 4th behind Moreno (Caja). He couldn’t get his sprint victory, but he has shown a lot of potential.

Tour de San Luis Wrap-Up

There is absolutely no way that anyone could claim that Christian Knees did not totally dominate this race. He won on both the mountains and the time trial. A great win for Team Sky there, and one that will take the pressure off the rest of the team to perform. Joly was the only one who ever even looked like challenging the man, and he got the mountain jersey for his trouble.

As for our own results, Traksel managed an 8th overall and a podium place on one of the uphill finishes, so he can be pleased with that. Still his abject failure in the mountains cost him a lot of time. Nevertheless, he still had a solid performance. Dekkers also failed to get his stage win but also showed some great potential and I’m sure that he is capable of a stage win later in the season as he comes into form.

Next up: January summary and February preview!

A nice result in this race. 8th overall is a good result with Traksel. Good luck in the rest of the season.
