well...shock having somewhat passed....he does fit in on our more technical league. it's a good fit for him to one day, if he fulfills even a small part of the humoungous gargantuan hype, step on to a bigger league.
but I just never thought this possible...
this is seriously weird... |

why the hell has Freddy Adu gone to Benfica, loads of Premiership clubs were after him but he decides to go to Benfica, that's a waste of a great talent

uhh...definitely not the Prem....for 2 reasons:
1. he doesn't qualify for a work permit. he tried anyway. was rejected.
2. english league's very physical, non-technical game is bad for an 18 year old. especially one whose game is 100% technical.
but...we're all just stunned over here...
and it's very bad for his development to go to a club that is extremely disorganized and everyone that leaves claims they were treated unfairly
things aren't exactly looking up for him. |

I think it was Diego, big talent who signed for a russian club... can't remember if it was diego, but it was a big talent.
But benfica has lots of talents, and I think its a great move by him.. He should not stress himself to much.. He will sign a big club some day, he has a lot of time yet.

honestly, looking at him...I doubt he's really 18.
but he was impressive at the u-20 world cup last month.
I think with the right supervision he'll be a player for a top club. just not a superstar. |

I think it was when he moved to Salt Lake from Dallas that people questioned his talent, over here as his performances seemed to drop, or what we saw of him anyway
obviously lets not shy away from the fact it's a great signing for Benfica

there's always that hype and they rarely make it.
it's very different being excellent when you're 17 years old when you can afford to be a one-dimensional player and being excellent or even good in the seniors. it's a whole different game.
look at Porto's Vieirinha....unbelievable skills and vision. every youth competition, always best player award every time.
now in his third senior season, he's still struggling to adapt. now he's going on loan to a top division club to try to adapt to the senior game.
prospects are one thing.
actually turning into a good player is something completely different. |

yes i agree, it is the same in cycling as i have mentioned before although more prominent in football,
Theo Walcott is tipped to be a great star for Arsenal and England yet all i've seen of him so far is run really, really fast but he's still only 18 like Adu

all i can find are sites saying that Adu doesn't want to go to Benfica even though a fee has been agreed, but i won't disagree with isso, he is Portuguese after all

Adu's U-20 W.C. re-solidified his ability ... he lead the U.S. team and in the game the U.S. got eliminated in he almost single handedly saved the U.S. |
