Planning a season

The first thing you need to do is take a look at your riders to know what are their strengs and weaknesses, who's a leader, a protected rider or a team mate, what are their favorite races, etc...

Next look at your sponsors objetives or set your own, because sometimes they aren't very realistic. This way you'll have an idea of what races are more important and you need to study them so you know what riders are going to be leaders for those races.

I usually have a excel sheet where I write down the name of the riders and their roles so I can make several groups where I would have an leader (not necessarily an absolute leader), his protected riders and his teammates. I do this before I go to the planner because that gives me an overall idea of the team I have.

Normally I make 5 to 6 groups of riders:

G1: Early season Hilly Classics (Like Milan San Remo) and small Stage races (Like Paris Nice).

G2: Early season and Cobblestone Classics (Like Paris Roubaix or the belgium classics).

--- Normally these riders will rest from May to August to avoid fatigue from long periods of training--- And the will ride La Vuelta or the late season Classics and Small Stage Races, unless they except to ride the Tour of France as teammates and are good on TT (like Cancellara), but don't expect them to be leaders there.

G3: The Giro de Italia bunch, normally made of good climbers and a couple of Sprinter, TT specialist that will peak there training schedule by the Giro. They will begin a bit later then the first two groups and will ride Short Hilly and Mountain Stage races until they are fit for the Giro in May. These riders could also be good teammates for the Tour or La Vuelta but you have to plan carefully in that case so they don't race a lot before the Giro (15 to 18 days close to the Giro the best) so they are in good shape when the other big tour comes.

G4: The TDF bunch, there are three groups here:

G4 Sprinters: Normally fit for the early flat stages of the tour.
G4 TT Specialist: Pure Time Trial guys. I like to find the TT Races (ex: PTDBenelux) best suited for the before and after the TDF so they can be leaders there and I use the to win stages and help in the Team TT in the tour.
G4 Stage Race specialist and Climbers: Normally the leader(s) and his protective riders. They reach their peak in the last two weeks of the tour.

These guys will have the most diverse season, cause the can ride in early hilly classics and rest before getting ready for the tour, and continue till they drop there from on august, or they can rest again an finish the season strong.

G5: The Vuelta and late season bunch. Normally the smallest group cause some riders come from G2, G3 or G4 groups to race in La Vuelta. The leader could be a teammate in the tour for example because if you don't race him to much before the tour he could be good in the TDF and great in La Vuelta.

G6: Some all round riders and youngsters who have to be ready to jump whenever and are not expected to be the best. This is an optional group and if you plan your team carefully you want all the guys to have a role, but is handy to fill in for injured riders and so.

Once you've made your groups and know the races you have to focus and the riders that are going to lead them you just have to begin planning with Lachi's tool.

When you finish selecting the races and riders, you have to choose a training schedule for each rider. Its easy if you set the peaks for the the moment his racing his GOAL race(s) and rest him when his not riding. If your groups are Ok for most riders you just need to copy their leaders FT program and tweak it a little.

Be sure to take in account that you need to leave gaps in the calendar for training camps cause they will be vital in getting an upper-hand.

To avoid fatigue you need to avoid long periods of hard training (if you zoom on a riders fitness schedule in the game you can check the accumulated fatigue from training). Normally is best to have two different periods of training in a season so the can rest in the middle, but is not always possible.

Also when you reach 60 days raced, you'll lose two Race Training Points for every other day race. So be sure to pass the 60th day mark after the rider has race his goal race(s).

60 Days race is very good but if you want more point for the rankings of your riders you have to race them more. 75 or 76 is normal more than that and your risk burning them out.

The best thing is to play a couple of seasons without much expectation and you'll get the hang of it and follow your own strategies. Is part of the fun of the game so feel free to experiment.
