Not so shortly I think. In the end he has over 60 years of time left to be even allowed to compete against this time Grin

Lieuwe Westra retires due to mental health issues. Wanty's former press officer thinks he may come back to this decision.

Sad. I remember he was extremely fucking strong during de Panne and I remember him winning on top of that evil, evil Finhaut-Emosson climb.

Only a week to go for the season to start! Damn, Im usually never excited at this point of the year, I've gone cycling mad lately..

EDIT: I will go to Innsbruck on this route. Holy moly the slaughter this will turn out to be. Evil race. Don't mess this up, UCI, please, don't mess this up: https://twitter.c...6542573568

I think he needs to concentrate on getting into the top 25 before making statements about going for the GC Smile

A lot of the time i do try and defend the UCI. Then, far too often, they are intent on shooting themselves in the foot...

So the growing saga of the Para-cycling Track Worlds is a prime example of this...

9th Jan - UCI announces that LA will host the 2017 Para-Cycling World Track Championship from March 2-5.
Seems reasonable. The LA velodrome is often used and a good venue. This will be the first Para Track Worlds in a post-Olympic year, so that's progress. Right?

Well turns out the UCI forgot to tell anyone this was coming. Until the 9th there was no major Para Track event scheduled for 2017 at all. So the UCI in all their wisdom decide to host one and give athletes and federations just about 8 weeks notice of a World Championship

10th Jan - Expected outcry from athletes and federations. Multiple Olympic medalists say they won't be attending due to the short notice. Federations scrambe to try and find funding, with several saying athletes will probably have to self fund.
Universal condemnation of the UCI and its decision from pretty much all areas.

UCI even admits it knows some athletes wouldn't be able to attend or would attend in poor shape.

Someone please tell me the UCI hasn't been this genuinely inept? This really ranks amongst their all time greatest f*ck ups....

Have to agree that the UCI is an absolute shambles, they fail to make decisions and when they actually do its a mess. Cookson is up for re-election this year and he really shouldn't be re-elected as he has been a failure but this being the UCI he will get another 4 year term.

Wow, that's really quite a fuck-up from the UCI... Sad

Landa and Thomas to share Team Sky leadership in the Giro d'Italia. I'll leave the analysis of this to others. Ringo?

Anyone know when the colombian NC's are happening? If there's one thing PCM has made me realize, it's that I miss the Colombian tricolore in a peloton with so many Colombian superstars

Landa makes sense as a leader at the Giro and I'm curious to see if he's actually the real deal because I have my doubts. Thomas will get killed at the Giro, this years Giro is shaping as a high quality GC battle so once the race heats up Thomas will drop like a stone.

In my expert opinion Smile

I agree with Strydz. Landa has got the better potential however has a massive point to prove following his performances last year.
Thomas is a super domestique. Can mix it with the big guns over a week but I don't think he is capable of maintaining that over the 3 weeks of a grand tour.

Landa possible top 5.
Thomas will turn into Landa's super domestique in the last week or two and finish in the top 20 or so.
The potential strength of the field will also be a massive factor.

I think thats very harsh.

Izagirre has never been in it for the GC, maybe apart from Giro 2015 (I can't remember his ambitions, but I assume he tried it there). However, he has progressed massively over the past 2-3 years.

But you are right: Chances are he will end up burning his fingers and end up like Rui Costa, a rider he anyways is very similar to. But you never know until you try it and stranger things have definitely happened. He will still focus on the week long races and if he fails relatively early in TdF, he will still have plenty of time to try to grab a stage.

Germany lost so many good PCT riders this year that the lack of a PCT team is really hurting: Nerz (injury), Voss, Matzka, Gretsch, Wegmann, Gerdemann,...

They would make a great small team from Germany, sponsors anyone? Smile

Route presentation for the Vuelta today at 19.00 CET! Pretty much all details are known by now, but it will interesting to see the stages.

It will look a lot like recent Vueltas, opening TTT, many uphill finishes and a 40 km ITT in the last week. The HTFs/MTFs are Cumbre del Sol, Xorret del Cati (I think there will be 3-4 km downhill at the end like always), Calar Alto, La Pandera, Sierra Nevada, Los Machucos, Sto. Toribio and Angliru. It will definitely be a hard route, but once again, not very balanced, altho there are rumoured a 2-4 downhill finishes which is kinda surprising for the Vuelta and Guillén!

Unfortunately, no multi mountain stage like Els Cortals in 2015 or even Aubisque in 2016. I think the closest will be stage 20 with Angliru, Cordal and maybe Cobortoria, but with Angliru, everything will come down to that climb anyways.

The one thing Im very interested about is how the Calar Alto and Sierra Nevada stage will look like. Hopefully the Sierra Nevada-stage will just be an extension of the stage in 2013 42 y/o Horner molested Nibali, Rodriguez and Valv in the primes.
