It's that time of year again, the Tour de France is here! The biggest race on Earth is upon us, and a new set of riders, young and old, are ready to battle it out for the Maillot Jaune.

www.letour.fr/2005/images/carte_2005.gif

Spoiler:

This year's route is one for a rider whose team is committed to winning. The famous climbs will obviously greet us once we enter the second week, but before that starts, the time-triallist's will have their time to shine with 76kms of racing against the clock in the first week alone.

But let's not forget the sprinters. They will have many opportunities to raise their arms in celebration as they fight for the Maillot Vert, the green points jersey.

Ever since Lance Armstrong ended the media game of "will he/won't he?" by announcing back in February that he was going to ride this year's Tour de France, the focus has been on the Texan and his team in search of signs of the strength or weakness that will determine the outcome of this year's Tour.

Last year, Armstrong achieved an unprecedented feat when he surpassed the Tour records of Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain to win his sixth Tour, and with the discipline and dominance of his US Postal team, Armstrong almost made it look easy.

If that achievement was astounding, what Armstrong aims to do this year is almost unthinkable: a seventh consecutive victory. That would make Armstrong's domination of the Tour almost unparalleled in cycling history. Sean Kelly's 1982 to 1988 sequence of wins in Paris-Nice is the only similar run of consecutive victories in a major stage race that we can think of - and there is a very big difference between a one-week stage race and grand tour.

Armstrong's form is an enigma, though. On the one hand, his 2004 win was preceded by a dominant ride in the Tour of Georgia; this year he looked less strong in April and victory went to his team-mate Tom Danielson.

On the other hand Armstrong also looked unimpressive in the 2004 Dauphine Libere, as he did this year. But he hit last year's Tour on rising form as riders who had previously been strong fell away, and by the time the 2004 Tour hit the mountains there was no doubt who was in charge.

Both Armstrong's coach Chris Carmichael and directeur sportif Johan Bruyneel have expressed their complete confidence in their man's ability to be ready on July 2. However his form appears in the run up to a Tour, and even with the decline that comes to all riders as they get into their 30s, it would be very foolish to discount Armstrong as the favourite once again this year, especially when you consider the sheer firepower of his Discovery Channel team.

The biggest threat to Armstrong's hopes of a seventh Tour win comes from the T-mobile team. The German outfit will throw three of the world's strongest stage racers against Armstrong: Jan Ullrich, Andreas Klöden and Alexandre Vinokourov. Here they are, and a few others who may surprise:

fotos.imagenesdeposito.com/imagenes/l/lance_armstrong_el_tour_de_france-23177.jpg

www.gigabike.be/common/flags/USA.gif Lance Armstrong - Discovery Channel

The unbackable favourite. The best climber in the world, the best time-triallist in the world. The team to back him up all the way, led by the veteran George Hincapie. What can stop him from making it 7 in a row?

cdn1.media.cyclingnews.futurecdn.net/photos/2006/jun06/suisse06/suisse066/FS011_600.jpg

www.gigabike.be/common/flags/GER.gif Jan Ullrich - T-Mobile Team

If anyone can beat the champion, it's Ullrich. For the first time he has full support from one of the best squads in Tour history, and he will need them if he's to drop Armstrong. He can just about match Lance on the TT, it's the mountains where his team will support him the most.

www.meteoweb.it/images/ciclismo4.jpg

www.gigabike.be/common/flags/ITA.gif Ivan Basso - Team CSC

From Ullrich on, these riders are outsiders. The strongest of the bunch seems to be the Giro revelation Ivan Basso. A monumental climber, the question is whether he can keep up after putting in a strong ride in the leg-sapping Giro, where a stomach-bug hindered his chances for the overall.

www.cyclinghalloffame.com/riders/pics/rasmussen_m%20reduced.jpg

www.gigabike.be/common/flags/DEN.gif Michael Rasmussen - Team Rabobank

"The Chicken", Rasmussen is one of the strongest climbers of his generation. A favourite for the Polka-Dot jersey, Rasmussen will have to make up lots of time with one of his signature breaks because come the time-trial, he will be near the bottom of the pack. Hard-to-tell how he'll go.

cdn3.media.cyclingnews.futurecdn.net/photos/2005/features/tmobtour/40DC3016_600.jpg

www.gigabike.be/common/flags/GER.gif Andreas Kloden and www.gigabike.be/common/flags/KAZ.gif Alexandre Vinokourov - T-Mobile Team

These two are paired together as possible winners, if Ullrich fails. They've shown ability to podium GTs in the past, but working for Ullrich means that a high-finish may be out of reach. Both similar riders with great ability against the clock, and uphilll.

And let's not forget guys like:

Levi Leipheimer - Gerolsteiner

Alejandro Valverde and Francisco Mancebo - Illes Balears-Caisse d'Epargne

Cadel Evans - Davitamon - Lotto

Floyd Landis and Oscar Pereiro - Team Phonak

Roberto Heras - Liberty - Seguros

and Bradley McGee - FDJ who could all suprise us and end up on the podium in Paris.

www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2005/07/07/0707tour_mcewen1_wideweb__430x326.jpg

A quick look at the Green Jersey battle sees three riders at the top of our list:

Thor Hushovd - Credit Agricole

Tom Boonen - QuickStep

and Robbie McEwen - Davitamon - Lotto

Hushovd and Boonen have strong teams surrounding them, looking to guide them to the green jersey, while McEwen is all alone, but he will have no problems winning sprints I'm sure. It's getting over the mountains that will be his obstacle. If he makes it all the way to Paris, the Australian may be draped in green for the second year running.

Here is the full startlist for this year.

This year's grand depart is in the Vendee region of France, specifically the town of Fromentine. A long prologue awaits the riders, with 19kms of road to decide who will wear the first maillot jaune. The course will suit a rider like Fabian Cancellara, last year's prologue winner, or the ever-consistent Lance. Ullrich and Basso will have a chance to flex their muscles and distance some of the other sompetitors.

For the fifth year in it's history, the Tour stars here, in the Vendee region of France. For the first time though, we're in the small western town of Fromentine, with a 19km time-trial replacing the traditional short prologue.

All eyes are on Lance to see if he can take the maillot jaune on day one, or will a challenge come from a younger rider looking to change the guard. We'll have to see.
i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/stage1-1.jpg

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/th_karpets.jpg The day started with the 4-time Tour starter Ludovic Turpin (AGP) rolling off the ramp to kick off the 92nd Tour de France. The Frenchman was greeted with cheers from the large crowd, but he would obviously not win today.

As some notable names began their ride, few caught the eye as much as the Maillot Blan contender Vladimir Karpets. The Iles Balears rider stormed through the course with the wind on his side and set a new best time, that many saw as a serious threat for the day. This was backed up by the rides of Floyd Landis (PHO) and Jens Voigt (CSC), two specialists who couldn't knock the 24-year old from his perch on top, despite very fast rides. A new force perhaps?

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/landis.jpg

Landis had no answer for the Russian..

More riders were reeled off one by one, none able to pass Karpets. The closest was Andrey Kashechkin (CRE), a consistent time-triallist and prologue rider, who's best efforts were still 11 seconds shy of Karpets. The Russian's case was helped by the sudden change of weather, with rain beggining to fall as Sylvain Chavanel (COF) left the gates.

In this rainy period, some big names left the starthouse. Alexandre Vinokourov and Andreas Kloden (TMO), Fabian Cancellara (FAS), Dave Zabriskie (CSC), World Champ Michael Rogers (QST), Laszlo Bodrogi (CRE) and Yaroslav Popovych (DSC) all leaving in the rain, putting their chances of a win and the yellow jersey in the bin. None could match Karpets.

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/chavane.jpg

Chava chose a bad time to start his ride...

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/hinapei.jpg It seemed as the final bunch of riders left the start, fortunes were changing. The sun began to shine, the roads began to dry and the crowds began to build. The big guns would be out soon. The first out was George Hincapie (DSC). Lance's right hand man was a prologue specialist, and had worn the yellow jersey before. It seemed though that the longer distance hurt him, and he finished 42 seconds behind Karpets, who was looking ever strong.

Now the last 10 riders were starting their rides. Cadel Evans (LOT) and Levi Leipheimer (GER) both left, neither could touch Karpets. Bobby Julich (CSC) next. Close, but not yet. Salvodelli, Botero and Basso all left. At the first check, they weren't even near. Basso had a reported stomach bug, and it showed. Finally, it was Jan Ulrich and Lance Armstrong. Ullrich had requested to start last and Armstrong agreed, so it was the American out first, and he didn't dissapoint, equalling Karpets at the halfway point.

Into the second half of the course for Lance, and he had Basso in his sights, as well as the time of Karpets. Ullrich was slow over the first 7kms.

And Lance pulled out a spectacular ride, coming to the line with Basso, and securing the maillot jaune by 8 seconds over Karpets. Ullrich was way off, 53 seconds back.

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/armstrong.jpg

The first road stage of the Tour hugs the west coast for about half the stage before heading inland for the finish in Les Essarts, a town associated with battles during the French Revolution. There's sure to be a battle royale going on at about 5pm on Sunday as Davitamon-Lotto's Robbie McEwen, Quickstep's Tom Boonen and Credit Agricole's Thor Hushovd have their first hit-out at the end of this flat stage, which shouldn't pose too many problems for any of the riders.

Tour de France Betting 2005

The first road stage of this Tour is a tough one to pick, as no one is sure of the sprinters' fitness and form.

The Tour's GC is obviously decided in the tall mountains, but the Points is a whole other competition, and the battle starts today. A pan-flat course should finish with a mass sprint, with a large bank of riders looking to wear Green for the first time. Today will be a great guide for the rest of the Tours sprints.
i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/stage2-2.jpg

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/voigt.jpg The first attacks of the day came straight after the start. A mainly French break based around Thomas Voeckler (BOU) was brought back by Discovery after Jens Voigt (CSC) joined in. Voigt was was only 22" behind Armstrong at the start of the day, so Lance and his teammates were having nothing of it as they were brought back.

Most riders were scared to attack, with Discovery vicious on the front, and Credit Agricole and Lotto helping on the side, but the exciting 22-year old Spaniard Luis Leon Sanchez (LIB) broke the stronghold, attacking solo to create a quick break. He was joined by 7 more riders soon, and the BOTD was formed.

It seemed today's break was a chance for TV time and nothing more...

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/boonen.jpg The rain was falling hard today in what had been a disastrous tour weather-wise so far. And while the rain falls, disasters happen. This year's first disaster occured here. Two riders had fallen on the side of the road near th efront of the peloton. One got up unscathed, the other was seriously injusred. The man on the ground was Tom Boonen (QST). The Belgian had broken his collarbone in the crash, and his Tour was over before it even started.

The break's lead was being slowly cut by the usual suspects (Discovery, Lotto, Credit Agricole) and the riders involved didn't seem excited by the idea of riding alone all day. It seemed a bunch sprint was inevitable as the peloton entered the sea-side town of La Terriere, and the loss of Tommeke was only encouraging the others.

The distinct lack of lead-out trains in this stage was strange, but it seemed to be in Robbie McEwen's (LOT) favour, as he just stuck to Hushovd's wheel, hoping to kick at the right time. 8kms left in the race and the control of the P was with Discovery still as they worked to bring back the BOTD, who were caught within the final 5kms.

i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd443/Teddy_The_Creator/valverde.jpg The final kilometre into Les Essarts was crazy. FDJ began a short train with Bernard Eisel at the front for Baden Cooke, but that failed. Hushovd and Kirsipuu were at the front at one point, but they laid back. It seemed it would be free for all. One rider who was a surprise at the front was Alejandro Valverde (ILB). The climber seemed to think he was a sprinter, as he hit the front and began his sprint first.

And it was working well! The Spaniard was driving the sprinters to the front, and as Hushovd and O'Grady kicked, with McEwen out of position, He stayed at the front. Who would win?

O'Grady! The 3-time stage winner had the luck to win today, as Hushovd closed. Valverde rode admirably to third, while McEwen seemed very fast but bad positioning cost him. Crazy sprint.

Stuey didn't risk a celebration, but teammate Sylvain Chavanel could!

Tour de France Betting 2005

A surpise stage winner today in O'Grady, and it seemed no one predicted it! Baden Cooke did very well, while Davis struggled, so our second bet seems to have some winners though. The loss of Boonen is tough, and anybody who bet on him for the Green Jersey will be refunded immediately.

Please don't put up bets at early in the moring and end them while I'm watching the Olympic race. Rolling Eyes I know it's a timezone issue but give us all a chance! Pfft

Edit: Well, I guess it actually helped me so whatever.

Okay I'll post the new bets in an hour or so and then I'll post th race in bout 12 hours. Is that okay?

Also, I'm putting a lot of effort into this, with only a few followers (thanks so much!). I was expecting a larger betting crowd but I guess not. Maybe it's too similar to Squires? Or people don't like PCM 10?

The tour continues to head east towards Germany, and today we finish in the finishing town of the famous Paris -Tours classics, Tours. Some CAT4 climbs will tests the legs of the sprinters, and with some riders out of form, and others out altogether (Boonen), the sprints are as open as they've been in years. Look for the likes of Wrolich, Forster and Cooke to have a red-hot go in today's sprint. One man that won't figure in the sprint is Alejandro Valverde, he admitted he only sprinted yesterday when he realized teammate Isaac Galvez Lopez wasn't on his wheel.

Tour de France Betting 2005

One man must be today's favourite, but the rest are very open. Will O'Grady cement his lead in green? Will McEwen bounce back? Or maybe a surprise?

Stage Winner - Stage 3
2.50 - Thor Hushovd
2.75 - Stuart O'Grady
3.00 - Robbie McEwen
4.50 - Baden Cooke
5.00 - Robert Forster

9.00 - Allan Davis

Match-Up - Stage 3

These guys haven't figured yet in the sprints, but have expressed their desire to win today. Who will finish faster?

2.80 - Robert Forster
3.25 - Peter Wrolich
