Rafal Majka
| Country: | Poland | | Born: | 12.09.1989 | | Team: | Saxo Bank | | Pro since: | 2011 | | Height: | 173cm | | Weight: | 62kg |
The only 22-year-old Polish Rafal Majka is considered to be one of the greatest talents but at the same time, he's still a blank sheet within the world of cycling. However, the young and slim Pole is riding fast in hilly terrain and if he plays his cards right, Rafal will soon be a contender to be at the top step of the podium.
But he's also a solid card to have in the mountains in the grand tours. Already in his very first protour season, he did tremendously well in the Vuelta and only time will show how far he can take his talents.
With his eagerness for adventure, Rafal is quite entertaining to watch as a fan of cycling and the road doesn't have to be that steep before he takes on a challenge in the front of the race.

Thanks everyone, hope you'll enjoy this story
Polish rider a leader of Saxo Bank in Giro 2012
Rafal Majka will lead the team Saxo Bank in the Giro d'Italia 2012. Polish rider will be leading the team of last year's winner. Is he able to replace Alberto Contador? Group Director, Bjarne Riis, believes in his talent.
- One of the goals for the upcoming season is to surprise opponents and do our best in the Giro with a young Pole, Majka, in the role of leader. He will fight for us, for the highest position in the overall standings. We also want Juan José Haedo to win for us a stage. I believe that we will go for both riders. This will be our goal - said Riise.
Rumor has it that during the training camp, Majka was the only rider, which could hold Contador's wheel. Pole impressed the heads of Saxo Bank and the Spaniard himself. - He is a great rider for Grand Tours - Riise said.
The best results in 2011 are:
- 24th overall in Tour de Pologne,
- 34th place in the Criterium du Dauphine,
- 36th in Tour de Romandie.

@PCMrulezz: Thanks!
@franki28: Thanks, I will wait for the final version
Majka surprised by the Riis decision
Where and when you heard about the nomination for the Saxo Bank team leader for next year's Giro d'Italia?
- Bjarne Riis said it to the reporters during the presentation of the group in Copenhagen, but I heard it this week during training camp in Israel. I have read about this a few articles on the internet, I was completely surprised.
What did you think after reading the statements of the group's director?
- At first, I was bit scared (laughs). I spend only a year racing with elite. But then I realized how great is this award. I am very pleased with the trust that gave me Riis. Now I have to work hard. I won't run out of motivation for sure.
What in your opinion, decided that Riis has entrusted this responsible role to the young rider?
- As far as I know, the decision was made after my show in the Vuelta. Perhaps, it was influenced by my ride during the Tour de Pologne too.
Your teammate - Alberto Contador - has won the race twice (2008 and 2011). Have you already asked him for some valuable advice?
- I didn't talk about it with Alberto. However, I had a valuable conversation with Bjarne Riis.
So what can we expect from you in the Giro?
- I'm very young cyclist and the first three places in the overall classification are almost impossible. We agreed that my goal is to finish on the highest possible place. For sure we want to fight for a white shirt - the leader of the youth classification. Maybe I would try to win a stage, but the most important is general classification.
The first training camp before the new season is already behind you. Was it good for you?
- Absolutely. Every day the sun was shining. We weren't training all the time. We had a great opportunity to swim in the Dead Sea. The salinity of the water is amazing. We were also jumping with a parachute from a height of 4000 m. This was quite fun.

Very interested. Maybe you know some races that you will use to prepare for Giro? I guess Tirreno could be on your schedule.

@FreitasPCM: Thanks!
@I_Mayo: Tirreno will be there for sure I will post the whole schedule before the first race. Some of the races are included in this interview.
Majka's plans for season 2012
The first starts in 2012 is yet to come, but from the beginning of January, you are very busy.
- Indeed. We just came to the training camp in the Canary Islands. We have a solid training here, even for six and a half hours a day!
Did you have a chance to race with Alberto Contador?
- Yes. I spend some time on his wheel. Alberto is a very nice man and he was impressed by my ride.
What did he say?
- He joked that since the beginning of the season, I am in such form, that at the end of the season, he will need to watch out for me. The guy that I admired on television, the great master, treated me like a friend. Incredible.
What are your plans to prepare for Giro?
- I will probably start with Tour Méditeranéen and in March I will start in Tirreno-Adriatico. Then I will probably race in Trentino or Romandie.
