Since I didn't watch it, could anyone tell me what kind of mistake or misdoing it was that got them relegated?

2nd rider finishing the first lap ahead of the 1st rider
This is supposed to happen in the 50m after the timing line, and the start of the turn.
Both Pendelton and the chinese one were ahead at the timing line. Albeit only by 1/4 of a wheel at best.

Seeing as the forum patrol looks a bit lazy this evening, I'd read it was a fault at the change-over for both.

It's not about knowing them or not, it's about stopping your effort, or producing it at the right moment, with the smallest possible margin. When margins are too short, sometimes you fail.

Btw, how about the British males team sprint, whose starter purposely fell in the qualifications to be given another chance after he'd screw his own start ?

So much for UCI discretion. Well done to the Germans, but China and GB were the better teams on the day.

As for Hindes deliberately falling, the rules don't say you can't and Hoy and Kenny had their hands up before Hindes was even off the track suggesting they thought it was a mechanical.

To be fair to the British team despite slightly ugly baldy Brailsford arguing with the judges - both Pendleton and Chris Boardman are saying the rules are the rules. It is a Team sprint, much like a relay in swimming and athletics and the fastest team does not necessarily win.

I think it would be nice though if the 'foul' were to be done electronically or something so it was immediately flagged up - rather than by these judges just viewing a TV monitor. The Chinese seemed to be very very close to a good change.

I have to say I think it is pretty much against the 'Olympic spirit' to deliberately fall off like the young German lad did. You could argue that Philip Hindes deliberately 'lost'. It is a very ugly way of doing it but again the rules are the rules - love the fact that Hindes completely admitted it instead of lying it would have been easy to come up with a mechanical issue.

Still a compelling first night on the track, no doubt we could get controversy with the sprints. The British team look bang on form in the men's and Pendleton looks at her peak also.
