And after all the transfer excitement it's back to racing with this double header. The GP Nobili features a hilly course and one more suited for sprinters the day after.

The line up for both races will be the same, but on the hilly course Mazzanti will be our leader of course, helped by Ascani.

The race #1
An early break goes, but is caught as the pack reaches the hilly circuit. Here we decide to send Ascani into the break. And this works, he and 2 others build up almost 5 minutes advantage over the next few laps. But the pack responds in time. Mazzanti is dropped over the last full climb, but Ascani is only caught on the downhill towards the finish and sprints with the 30 odd best riders. He's completely empty though and fades badly. Pozzovivo looks to be winning it, but at the very last moment Paterski pushes his wheel in front of the Italian pocket climber.
Final classification
| 1 | Maciej Paterski | Liquigas - Cannondale | 4h46'05 | | 2 | Domenico Pozzovivo | Colnago - CSF Inox | s.t. | | 3 | Eros Capecchi | Liquigas - Cannondale | s.t. | | 4 | Dimitriy Muravyev | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | | 5 | Paolo Tiralongo | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | | 6 | Daniele Callegarin | Team Type 1 - Sanofi | s.t. | | 7 | Daniele Pietropolli | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | | 8 | Maxim Iglinskiy | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | | 9 | Andrey Kashechkin | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | | 10 | Dario Cataldo | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. | | 31 | Luca Ascani | Farnese Vini - Selle Italia | + 55 |

On day 2 we put our money on Guardini of course. Liquigas rider Viviani looks to be his biggest competitor.

The race #2
The early break doesn't stand a chance, as Liquigas, Colnago and Lampre work hard in the peloton. Leading up to the sprint Modolo crashes out. The pace is pushed so high in the final kilometers that no trains are formed and everyone has to sprint on his own. It's Colli who profits from the chaos, Guardini is still building his form, but manages a decent 7th place.
Final classification
| 1 | Daniele Colli | Team Type 1 - Sanofi | 4h00'02 | | 2 | Manuel Cardoso | Caja Rural | s.t. | | 3 | Elia Viviani | Liquigas - Cannondale | s.t. | | 4 | Daniele Pietropolli | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | | 5 | Manuele Mori | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | | 6 | Zdenek Stybar | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. | | 7 | Andrea Guardini | Farnese Vini - Selle Italia | s.t. | | 8 | Iljo Keisse | Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. | | 9 | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | | 10 | Julien Antomarchi | Team Type 1 - Sanofi | s.t. |

Yes, gonna be slow in July. But we're getting ready for glory in August and September again.
In other news we have been able to sign a star to our team for next season. As became clear in the Tirreno it takes something else to compete in the ProTour. As such we have signed Giovanni Visconti. After a bad first half of 2012 he gladly returns to his old team after only 1 season in Spain. His best results so far was 10th in Milano - San Remo, but with us he feels he can use his potential better.
We don't have to say how big this signing is for us, Visconti will be a clear leader in everything with hills. He will give us a chance to shine in the Ardennes classics.

Welcome back!

Time for another stage race in Italy. The Brixia Tour combines mountains and flat stages and mixes things up with a TTT. We hoe Guardini can already show himself in the sprints. With the likes of Pozzovivo, Garzelli and Szmyd here we don't have much hope for the mountains.

Stage 1

Things start of with a TTT. OPQS, led by Grabsch, proves the strongest. We don't perform well, finishing over 1'30" down on place 8.
Stage 2

Stage 2 heads into the mountains, but the stage isn't long and the final climb isn't very steep. Betancourt surprises everyone by attacking early, but that turns out to be an attempt at hiding bad form. Everything comes together on the last climb. Ascani can't follow the best 20 riders. Ulissi wins the stage solo and takes the leader jersey.
Stage 3

Time for the sprinters. Liquigas, Bank BGZ and Farnese keep a tight rein on the break. The stage predictably ends in a mass sprint. Guardini chooses the right wheel as he latches onto Smolen. The Liquigas train for Viviani fails. Viviani manages to win anyhow, Guardini can only hold on for 3rd behind Smolen.
Stage 4

Two hard climbs in the final quarter of this stage will decide the overall. Garzelli tries a long range attack today, but he is caught on the second to last climb. Everything blows up there as just 13 riders stay in the front group. Ascani was feeling very strong (+5) but still couldn't keep up. On the last climb Ulissi gets into trouble as Szmyd and Pozzovivo attack. Pozzovivo proves the strongest and takes the stage and the GC.
Stage 5

Again a tightly controlled race, even though the break contained over 20 riders at some point. Everything comes together and we have another mass sprint. Guardini tries to position himself on Smolens wheel, but gets boxed in. Viviani doesn't compete and so it's an easy win for the Pole. Guardini salvages a 9th spot.
Final classification
| 1 | Domenico Pozzovivo | Colnago - CSF Inox | 16h36´14¨ | | 2 | Sylwester Szmyd | Liquigas - Cannondale | + 24¨ | | 3 | Diego Ulissi | Lampre - ISD | + 1´41¨ | | 19 | Luca Ascani | Farnese Vini - Selle Italia | + 7´40¨ |
(forgot to export, so just top 3)

Will have to plan the season better next year, kinda annoying riding without form.
In other news, the Eneco Tour has denied us a wildcard. So bad news for Guardini.

Welcome to Italy for the Coppa Placci. Ascani will be our race leader, while Gatto and Pozzato race for the first time since April.

The course is standard hilly Italian race. We start at the coast, heading inland at several points to ride up some hills. Finally we return to the coast where some minor bumps are all that's left between the riders and the finish.

The race
With Lampre, Liquigas, Astana and Colnago controlling the peloton the break doesn't stand a chance. Instead it's a race of attrition. 30 odd riders are left in the front group at the last climb. Here Pozzovivo is the only one who puts in a half hearted attack, but most riders are afraid to go to early. So this group of 30, including Ricci Bitti and Ascani will sprint for the victory. The sprint is mayhem carried out over the full width of the road. Surprise victor is Lagutin, Ascani gets a very nice 2nd and Ricci Bitti comes in 14th. Not bad after working all day for Ascani.
Final classification
| 1 | Sergey Lagutin | Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team | 5h36'06 | | 2 | Luca Ascani | Farnese Vini - Selle Italia | s.t. | | 3 | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | | 4 | Maciej Paterski | Liquigas - Cannondale | s.t. | | 5 | Jure Kocjan | Team Type 1 - Sanofi | s.t. | | 6 | Marcel Wyss | Atlas Personal - Jakroo | s.t. | | 7 | Rasmus Guldhammer | Christina Watches - Onfone | s.t. | | 8 | Julien El Fares | Team Type 1 - Sanofi | s.t. | | 9 | Diego Ulissi | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | | 10 | Daniel Oss | Liquigas - Cannondale | s.t. |

Thanks for the comments all. I figure in about 2-3 weeks we're gonna get a lot of wins again. Will be nice to see how Pozzato does outside of cobbled races. He only has one win so far so he'll be hot for more.

The last day of July has a flat Italian race. But not quite flat as the course makes 13 laps over a moderate hill. No really steep parts, but could get taxing nonetheless. The startlist isn't really strong, Pozzovivo and Bertagnolli seem to be the only threats.

After his good showing in the Coppa Placci Ascani will be allowed to show his skills. But as the hill isn't too hard we will try to keep Guardini in the game too.

The race
The first 3 laps see numerous attempts at escapes, but as the group grow to over 20 riders there's always a team that feels threatened. Andriato was in these early tries, but no luck for him.
After another of those groups has been caught a smaller group of 11 riders forms, Benenati among them. And this group is allowed 6' advantage. With 60 to go as Lampre takes up the chase, Benenati drops his fellow escapees, and continues solo. And for a long time it looks like he can make it. But at the top of the final ascent he's caught.
This is the cue for Bertagnolli to attack, he's followed by Witecki. And Benenati, still dropping back, blocks our train of Ascani, Pozzato, Guardini. The Lampre riders also drop back and so a huge gap forms in no time.
Ascani, does his best, but Bertagnolli is gone. Pozzato has the strongest sprint in the end, but is unable to catch Witecki and has to settle for third. Guardini was a bit in over his head, but still held on for a top 10 place. Gatto and Benenati make it 5 Farnese riders in the top 20.
Final Classification
| 1 | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Lampre - ISD | 4h55'19 | | 2 | Mariusz Witecki | Bank BGZ | + 21 | | 3 | Filippo Pozzato | Farnese Vini - Selle Italia | s.t. | | 4 | Maciej Paterski | Liquigas - Cannondale | s.t. | | 5 | Eros Capecchi | Liquigas - Cannondale | s.t. | | 6 | Luca Ascani | Farnese Vini - Selle Italia | s.t. | | 7 | Daniele Pietropolli | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | | 8 | Keven Lacombe | SpiderTech powered by C10 | s.t. | | 9 | Andrea Guardini | Farnese Vini - Selle Italia | s.t. | | 10 | Jure Kocjan | Team Type 1 - Sanofi | s.t. |

It's off to Spain for the Vuelta a Burgos. As we didn't get a wildcard for the Eneco Tour there will be a gap after this race. Bad news for Ascani and Guardini who had hoped to peak there. But they are in good form here as well. Although the stages might be a bit too hard for Guardini.

Biggest contenders will surely be RSNT who bring both Fuglsang and Horner to this race.<br />

A break of 12 is allowed to go clear, but is always kept within range. Their biggest advantage is 3'40. As we come to the big dual climb Benenati drives up the pace and almost catches the break. But his tempo is too high for many in the pack so they let him go solo. He reaches the break and will be the last to be caught, at 20 km from the finish. RSNT want this so they keep every attack neutralized. Ascani leads Pozzato first into the final k, but Horner can't be beaten today.

Classification
| 1 | Chris Horner | RadioShack - Nissan | 3h52'01 | | 2 | Gustavo César Veloso | AndalucÃa | s.t. | | 3 | Jakob Fuglsang | RadioShack - Nissan | s.t. |
Several splits occurred on the final climb and Ascani finished almost 1 minute down.
Stage 2

Arguably the easiest stage we will try to ride for Guardini. Gatto works hard during the stage and the breakaway is duly caught. Pozzato leads Guardini onto the final climb in a good position, but the terrain was a bit too difficult for our young sprinter. Landbouwkrediet have made an awesome train and take the stage, Ascani does a great sprint on his own and takes 5th.

Stage result
