Well, you could argue that selfishness, be it your own individual or the one of the entire race, is an evolutionary necessity  But then again, it's not like human kind would have to worry about its further existence, at least not in the closer future.

Edit: And about the TV thing, it is not because of poverty Baseball, but it is their choice to not have a television, as i am aware, only bullshit is going out of this machine, half of it being advertisment. So the friend who dont have it, they have more free time to do plenty of other things (going out,do some sport, play games-computer or board games, we play trading card games a lot, and many more...).And of course there are millions of people who cant afford it.
Edit2: The meat-eating, hunting thing is indeed so complex it cant be discussed on the internet much,as Ian suggested. But saying we eat meat for being selfish? That is nonsense,we eat it because of our ancestors thousands years ago did and of course they did, because human body needs it (mainly because of carbohydrates) and it is human nature to eat it.
The actual system of meat supplying is horrible for the animals, but what to do to feed billions? We can only hope that more animal-friendly (it sound bad, but you know what i mean) farms will be built, but the meat from it is expensive and it is demanding lot of space.
My imaginations are that people will trade goods with each other once again, including meat and the other food (local farmers supplying the close area). But imagine that in large cities, iam bit a Thomas Moore in this,as this would need to break our reliance on money and huge turnaround in human thinking

Of course, and it's only logical that we are to be completely selfish. After all, who do you spend your entire ilfe with? That's right, only yourself. Man is lonely, so he should think about himself.
Although "civilization" teaches us to think about others, and we think we do. But that's all bullshit in the end.
However, trough our selfishness we can help others. And that is a necessity, I believe. Why do most people help others? To make them look good (social power), to feel good about themselves or if they want something in return. I have no problem with the first two. Some would argue: but you don't really care for the person you're helping, but that's not necessarily through. And if it is to be true, well, at least that person is helped, either way.
But to tell everyone: I am not selfish.
That's not natural
(although selfish has gotten a different meaning in our individualistic way of living, we simply mean more and less selfish, I think )

To come back to the hunting thing : Avin, carbohydrates are mostly coming from vegetables and cereals (do those count as vegetables ?), potatoes, rice, wheat and its derivations (bread, etc.).
Meat is mainly used for proteins.
Thing about animals, especially mammals, is that their nervous system is very much like ours. So, most likely, they feel pain, stress, etc. like we do. This comes to say that shooting a mammal is like shooting a human being, in terms of suffering caused.
Another aspect about meat is that the production of 1 kg of meat requires huge amounts of CO2 and water. It's an incredible source of pollution.
And people can be healthy without eating meat, just check the number of famous vegetaians or vegans around, including famous sportsmen and women.
As for myself, I've reduced my consumption, but it seems I shouldn't go too far with it, being an endurance athlete (at my own modest level) at the same time, it tends to make my hematocrit level drop. It fell beneath 40 % last March... Lack of iron was the most probable cause.

Mine is rather average (naturally), around 45 % when I was 15-16. Some people have naturally around 52 %, so a 5% loss doesn't affect them as much. Below 40 for men and 38 for women starts being critical.
And it's even worse for athletes, since endurance efforts virtually slaughter red cells.
I've been taking artificial iron as a supplement since March, no milk based products at noon (when I take iron) and extra vitamin C to assimilate iron better.
Other solutions were too expensive for me : EPO or blood transfusions.
