August 16th Play-off Round
FC København 1-3 FC Viktoria Plzen
FC BATE Borisov 1-1 SK Sturm Graz
FC Twente 2-2 SL Benfica
Arsenal FC 1-0 Udinese Calcio
Olympique Lyonnais 3-1 FC Rubin Kazan
August 17th
Wisla Krakow 20:45 APOEL FC
Maccabi Haifa FC 20:45 KRC Genk
NK Dinamo Zagreb 20:45 Malmo FF
Odense BK 20:45 Villarreal CF
FC Bayern München 20:45 FC Zürich
With the first legs of the champions league play-off round starting I think its time to open up the thread. I was shocked that Plzen were able to upset Copenhagen and I think they have a good chance of making the group stage.

The 3rd goal of Viktoria Plzen was really awesome.

København was a joke, the first 20 min of second half, they were sleep walking.. The were only playing on corners and cross ins.. I was definetly desapointed. |

Another stunner with Odense beating Villarreal. The goal was because of a mistake, but the Danish side has a good start with this win.

If Villarreal don't screw up, they should go through for the group phase.

Yesterday's disappointing Copenhagen game was forgotten after Odense's performance
However, Denmark will probably end up with 0 teams in the CL group phase this year.
Concerning Copenhagen, it should be mentioned that you can't really compare last season's team with this year's. Five players from the starting line up, including Jesper Grønkjær and the team's (now ex) captain, William Kvist, and the coach have left the club. It takes time to get the new bunch of players working properly together.

I also read it today. Was worth a German report as Wessels is German.
I don`t understand why he isn`t playing in a bigger club. He is very strong.
He made brilliant games for Bayern but of course never had a chacne with KAhn as nr.1. When he signed for Cologne, he did great things, although later when he played in England.
2-3 years ago he had no club and was playing in the 5th league or so until a benefiz game where he played for Cologne again and was still brilliant. Now hopefully he can show himself in the CL with Odense.

Wisla might be the First Polish team in Champions League in long time.... if yet they don't screw up

I hope Villarreal screw up, tbh. That amount of arrogance only 60km away is surely not good for my health.

Twente is screwed after 2-2 at home against Benfica. So there'll be only one Dutch team in the CL, unless some miracle happens. |

Wessels? Oh dear. He sucks. Not in the game against Villareal, obviously, but in general, he seems extremely insecure. He was very nervous against Panathinaikos (the last goal was his fault), he can't catch a ball etc., etc. It's a miracle that he's still on the 1st team.

To be honest, I haven`t seen him playing in the last 2-3 years except of this one friendly match, where he convinced me once again.
But always when I saw him playing he was a great goalie.

Speaking of CL clubs, this year's edition of the yearly "Porto sells a player for a ludicrous profit" is Falcão to Atlético de Madrid for €40 Million, with an extra €7 million depending on performance clauses.

I don't understand why he signed for Atlético. He had the chance to play the Champions and the European Supercup, but he decides to join a side who will play the Europa League. What does he want to, win it again? I don't know, he deserve better, imo.
EDIT: And even if he wouldn't play the Champions with Porto, he could have with Chelsea, who seemed interested in him a while ago.

Frankly, I'm happy with the sale. He cost 6 million and was sold for a 34 million profit, possibly rising to a 41 million profit. Awesome.
Meanwhile Ruben was bought for 3 and sold for 5. I'm unhappy about that, he has a lot of untapped potential he hasn't reached yet.
Still, at least we still have Moutinho and Defour in the midfield.
Now, no more sales until we sell Hulk next season for a similarly ridiculous amount
EDIT: Or James in a few years. There's zero doubt James is a future superstar of world football. The kid is possibly the most talented footballer Porto have had since Futre

It's Atlético we're talking about, the performance clauses will never be fulfilled.
I guess he signed for Atlético to play in Spain, a stronger league which also assures him two extra holiday weeks (well, sort of) In a direct club to club comparison, Porto is a better place than Atlético. One has to admit that Porto knows how to move in the market, so different from Benfica's 'let's pay a ridiculous amount of money for an even more ridiculous goalie' or Sporting's 'let's PAY for Capel' (a guy I wouldn't want for free in my team). No wonder they dominate the Primeira Liga.

It didn't turn out so bad! They bought him by 8.5M and sold him for 8.6M! Which is clearly, even stranger.

Yep, they sold him for 8.6M to a team who is in voluntary bankrupcy, in an operation where, at best, they are laundering money. I wouldn't be surprised if Benfica never received the whole 8.6M, though.
