Summary of 2011 – Part 2: Awards
Firstly, a summary of the monthly awards:
| January | Mark Cavendish | HTC - Highroad | | February | Leonardo Duque | Cofidis, le crédit en ligne | | March | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas – Cannondale | | April | Philippe Gilbert | Omega Pharma – Lotto | | May | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas – Cannondale | | June | Mark Cavendish | HTC – Highroad | | July | Alberto Contador | Saxo Bank – Sungard | | August | Tomas Vaitkus | Astana |
Then, here are some special awards:
Most Race Days
Vicente Reynes
The Spaniard collected the incredible amount of 107 race days for his team Omega Pharma – Lotto. He didn't achieve much, a Top 10 at one Tour de France stage was his highlight, still, this endurance deserves to be worshiped.
Most Wins
Vincenzo Nibali
The Italian had an amazing season! He took his 22 wins in only 4 months, among those five stage and the overall win of the Giro, and six stage races in total.
Newcomer of the Season – Best U23 Rider
 Peter Sagan
Sagan started his season calm with reasonably good places at the Giro di Sardegna (4th) and the Giro della Provincia di Grosseto (2nd) but then made his breakthrough in the late season: With 8 classic wins from his double in Canada till the Japan Cup, he really did some dominating performances and showed that he can compete with the best with his 3rd at the Giro di Lombardia.
Oldie but Goldie – Best 34+ Rider
 Carlos Sastre
His most impressive performance showed Carlos Sastre at the Vuelta a Espana, where he won a stage and finished third in front of the likes of Alberto Contador or Janez Brajkovic, but he had a great season in general: His win at the GP Ouest – Plouay surprised everyone and he also convinced with a third place overall in the Österreich-Rundfahrt or a fourth at the Tour de Langkawi.
Most Outstanding Performance
The tenth stage was one of the hardest stages of the Tour, 204 kilometers and 4 of the hardest mountains should sow the seeds for the showdown of the favorites. And indeed, Alberto Contador and Sammy Sanchez laid the foundation for their first and second places overall. But one man spoiled the real big party: Yury Trofimov! He was in the breakaway for about 170 km and saved 1'15' into the finish – the polkadot being another reward for his extraordinary performance!
Vélo d'Or
Place 3:
 Vincenzo Nibali
He already was mentioned on another occasion: His 22 wins, most important the very dominant win at the Giro, qualify him for this award. Also, Vincenzo Nibali is the rider with the most CQ points in relation to the days raced.
Place 2:
 Samuel Sanchez
Not much to say, the results speak for themselves: Winning both the Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco and the Vuelta a Espana and finishing second in the Tour de France, Samuel Sanchez was one of the top stage racers of the season.
Place 1:
Alberto Contador
In 2011, the Spaniard again proved to be the best stage racer in the world. He did not only win the Tour de France in a very dominant way, but also the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, the Tour de Suisse, the Clasica San Sebastian - thus being the only rider who won more than two Pro Tour races during the season – and the Vuelta a Burgos and finished on top of the CQ ranking. A well deserved Vélo d'Or.

Nice overview. Especially the smaller ones like Reynes, Trofimov or Sastre.
This "background" info makes stories really great.

I would be honoured to finish 2nd or 3rd behind your story, as One Rider Story of the year.
Such amazing overviews you have here. And I agree with roturn.

Couldn't agree more, again. Great overview, well sorted (if that's an english phrase ..) You made a really nice story here and I'm looking forward to this being converted to PCM11 (if that's remembered right by me ...)

Again, thanks
@ FreitasPCM: Yeah, I thought it would be a nice idea to have another team similar to Euskaltel. Plus, by friends, I have sort of a "relationship" to Catalunya, so I hope they're successful

Hey guys,
this is my last entry for this year. I would like to use it to thank all the constant (and the non-constant ) followers of my career. Your support kept my motivation high to continue this website and blog all the way through the whole season.
From your comments, I understood that you mostly enjoyed following me and my team. As you know, I will continue this website next year as well, I even bought a new camera to give you photos of higher quality
I hope that you'll be with me next season as well and that you keep on liking this website.
That's it from me in 2011,
See you,
Dominik!
