In other news: ASO will announce the wild cards for the Tour de France in a couple of weeks.

French website cyclismactu got the news first: the Tour de France will announce the wildcard selections for the 2011 season in only a couple of weeks' time.
18 World Tour teams are pre-selected but there are four invitations left for ASO to decide on. "We're doing it to avoid people asking questions for too long, and also so the teams don't dither too much. Getting such certainty so early on, this will allow them to plan their season differently, whether they're invited or not" said race director Jean Francois Pescheux to velochronno.fr.

The Inner Ring speculates that Saxo Bank may not be invited due to UCI rules (and to allow one more French team):
ASO could rip up the rulebook and declare Saxo Bank doesn't have enough points to merit inclusion if you strip out Contador. Indeed you can run with this and say Astana have blown too many chances as well. But means feeding the UCI rulebook into the shredder. You'd need to do this very early in the season so the fuss can die down.

Obviously not very likely to happen, but still interesting.

Also, ASO says there'll be "several surprises":

Me too. Pfft

Anyway, another team I'd like to see be given a wildcard is Bretagne-Schuller.
Rest in Peace Wouter Weylandt and Xavi Tondo Sad

Would be very nice to see Sastre and Menchov at the Giro and Vuelta.

Nygaard is (in)famous for being the king of pompous bullshit. This guy is educated in marketing and communication, and still treats press releases like he owns the world.

Someone needs to slap him in the face. Twice. With a broom.

Having purchased some of the best riders and put them into one team, TEAM Leo-tard Trick actually have a chance of succeeding in their pompous rant...

Cav is in a good mood for once - "Some of you don't know, we [Greipel] are actually lovers. We both refrain from saying that," Cavendish said. "There you go, you got your headline."

...and how many chances he had yet...
But before we argue Germany vs. Britain stuff Grin
I have nothing against Cavendish, but I think that he is not in form so early and Greipel looks extremely good prepared for the TDU. He is much thinner than normally to climb Willunga Hill perfectly.
So Davis and Goss are in my eyes stronger than Cavendish in January. No question Cav will beat these 2 later easily.
Just my impression -.-

Indeed, and I dont think Cavendish would mind too much if say, the roles reverse, and he lead out Goss in this race only - he is often on about thanking his teammates, and he wanted to try to help Goss take a Vuelta stage last year, only the opportunity didnt arise (remember the stage where Goss gave him an awesome leadout and then sat up, and Cav gestured to say dont sit up!), and we cant forget of course his last gift to Greipel before that particular relationship went completely pear-shaped - but I suspect that the team get more publicity for a Cavendish win than having Goss win, even in Australia. Especially with the media hype re: Greipel.

Also, your argument implies that Greipel has looked to peak in some way for TDU - whereas the better sprinters like Cavendish, Farrar, Petacchi (if not banned) etc have got their focus on more important races: MSR/TDF/Worlds etc

And if Greipel was good enough he would have had a chance to do the Tour, but he's not as good as Cavendish, yet wanted to be treated equally, hence the lack of TDF experience he has. He cant complain about HTC not giving him opportunities though, they gave him the train to win in so many of the smaller races.

Greipel is good enough to race the TDF, he just isn't as good as Cav and their fight meant Greipel could only race small races.

EDIT: and he can complain about HTC, they didn't give him a chance to race the top sprinters

Fair enough

But he could have left HTC earlier had he particularly wanted a shot at the Tour, rather than winning the smaller races.

Tbh, even though he is seen to have been successful last year with plenty of wins, I think Greipel wasted 2010 by staying with HTC - he knew by the start of last year he wasnt going to get the big opportunities. He just waited til this season to make his much needed move

wielerland.nl wrote that the Mallorca Challenge is in danger this year because of financial problems.
If this becomes true, it would be a debacle for many teams and riders, who start the season there. Especially these few Pro Tour teams without an invitation for Quatar and Oman would have big problems.

Obviously they got some bonus finances and there will definitely be a 2011 Mallorca Challenge. But they need more sponsors to secure this race in the next years.

@SN: Totally agree with that. 2010 was wasting time for him. With any other team he would have ridden most big races especially MSR and TDF.

Wow, Andy and Frank really don't like Sastre:

.
"I don't see him as a threat for the GC. It was a fluke year and he had good teammates and although he won't say it he won the Tour because of us."

and

"We let go of the jersey for him," said Fränk.

yes Frank, you gave him victory, you would have won had it not been for him...
