I didn't know that. I figure most Protestants/Anglicans represent GB, whereas most Catholics represent Eire ?

Normally, although I'm a Protestant who could hypothetically represent both and I'd probably chose Ireland. Pfft

As expected The Usa took gold at Team Final Gymnastics (W). Russia second and Romania third. China very dissapointed fourth. Canada doing great ending up fifth. (:
Russian last two athletes failed at Floor as Chinees last athlete failed at Jump.
Good work Raismann, Wieber, Douglas, Maroney and Ross

I don't know about the Olympians this year really. It might still be true in that regard. In golf Graeme McDowell represented Ireland under the Irish tricolour despite being Protestant. Likewise Rory McIlroy (Catholic) is leaning towards representing Great Britain in Rio when golf returns to the games. So it does happen. To be honest though I believe they're putting sport above politics or religion. Smile

To explain it further, the Republic gave up it's claim on Northern Ireland in the Good Friday Agreement. However if someone in the North said "I wish to be considered an Irish citizen" then the Dublin government would agree. When the last census was collected, I declared myself Irish (and I have an Irish passport). If I wanted to I could say I'm also British (Irish-British or whatever) and both the governments in Dublin and London would accept it. Therefore sports stars in Northern Ireland can opt to represent one or the other without much fuss (except football as a number of Northern Ireland players switched to the Republic at senior level).

Anybody knows why a goal in hockey can only be scored against the board at the bottom of the goal, and not in the net? Belgium's women hockey team played 0-0 against China, but actually scored.. The goal wasn't approved though because the ball was scored 'too high'.. Sad

Spoiler:

That rule only applies on short/penalty corners, its due to safety.

Otherwise people would be running out at the hitter who could flick the ball into the top corner (and at their heads)

A quick Wikipedia research:

For safety reasons, the first shot of a penalty corner must not exceed 460 mm high (the height of the "backboard" of the goal) at the point it crosses the goal line if it is hit. However, if the ball is deemed to be below backboard height, the ball can be subsequently deflected above this height by another player (defender or attacker), providing that this deflection does not lead to danger.

A victory against 2008 Olympic finalist China would have been great, and deserved, because Belgium really dominated.. But yeah I'll just dream on Pfft Better luck next time against Team GB (another tough challenge probably?)

Belgium-Netherlands tomorrow in the men's competition, I'm very interested to see what the Red Lions can do Grin It will be a very exciting derby Grin

GB women should win that but it will be close (4-2 with late winners)

Netherlands are the world number one so I expect you to lose 4-1 (sorry)
