USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 2

August 23, 2011

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/Profile.jpg

The climbs come fast and early,
as the riders head right into the Rocky mountains.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/1.jpg

Andrew Talansky attacks at the gun.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/2.jpg

And outclimbs everyone to take the maximum KoM points.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/3.jpg

The peloton is really chasing hard after Talansky,
riders are scattered all over the road.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/4.jpg

The biggest favourite caught behind is Rory Sutherland.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/5.jpg

On the flat section Talansky throws in the towel
and heads back to the peloton.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/6.jpg

This allows many of the groups behind to catch up including Sutherland.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/7.jpg

At the first sprint point, Gretsch grabs a few bonus seconds in front of Talansky.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/8.jpg

Dalivier Ospina is the first attacker once we reach the climb,
Kessiakoff decides to go with this move.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/9.jpg

But these riders are all pulled back by Volodymir Gustov.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/10.jpg

With 10kms to go all the favourites are in one group,
expect for Kessiakoff who is dropped
after his first attack drained all the energy from his legs.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/11.jpg

At the top Jurgen Van Goolen opens a small advantage.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/12.jpg

But his lead doesn't last long as Jesús Hernández goes storming by.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/13.jpg

And it turns out to be the winning move of the day!

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%202/14.jpg

Everyone else shortly follows around the one minute mark.
The overall picture is totally reshaped by the results today.

Interview - Andrew Talansky

Q: Hernández really rode away from everybody today, do you think anybody could take yellow away from him?
A: Yes. The course today really was more of a mental game then anything else. He just found the perfect spot to attack and no one could match. So it should be fun to see how he will ride when chasing and not attacking.

USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 3

August 24, 2011

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/Profile.jpg

Jesús Hernández took yellow on stage 2,
who is going to challenge him for it today?

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/1.jpg

Taylor Phinney along with 8 others create the BOTD.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/2.jpg

But they are keep in check the entire day,
so when Peterson attacks early into the final climb
he quickly joins up with them.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/3.jpg

Peterson is soon all by himself with the peloton chasing right behind.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/4.jpg

10kms from the top and attacks start to occur in the peloton.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/5.jpg

But Peterson just keeps turning the pedals over and maintaining a two minute lead.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/6.jpg

As the pavement turns to dirt Kanstantsin Siutsou puts in a powerful attack, followed by Hernández, that not only reaches Peterson but passes him.
Behind everyone is riding for themselves.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/7.jpg

And Hernández and Siutsou get to the top together.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/8.jpg

A minute later comes this 4 man group of Talansky, Morris Possoni,
Jurgen Van Goolen, and Rory Sutherland.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/9.jpg

Talansky is taking a lot of risks on the downhill ...

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/10.jpg

But it wasn't enough, Hernández holds off Siutsou for the win.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/11.jpg

Talansky (3rd) and Sutherland (4th)
are given the same time as Hernández.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%203/12.jpg

Most of the other favourites come in at +1'23".

Interview - Andrew Talansky

Q: You are really climbing well here on home soil, any reason behind it?
A: I don't really know, it's always great race here in the United States but I would have to give most of the credit to Kessiakoff for looking after and protecting me in the peloton.

USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 4

August 25, 2011

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%204/Profile.jpg

A tough 15kms mountain ITT should allow
both Van Garderen and Talansky to make up some time.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%204/1.jpg

This course is perfect for Tejay, and he doesn't let us down.
He posts the fastest time by far at 23'36".

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%204/2.jpg

Sutherland, another pre-race favourite,
is 19 seconds slower then Van Garderen.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%204/3.jpg

Talansky continues his great race so far by losing out to Tejay by a second.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%204/4.jpg

Kanstantsin Siutsou finally takes EA-Sony off the top spot
by beating Van Garderen by 3 seconds.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%204/5.jpg

Last but not least, Jesús Hernández reminds everyone he isn't
a great time trialer even if it is through the mountains.
He is way off the pace, 1'06" behind Siutsou.
Which means Siutsou is the new overall leader by 3 seconds.

Q: You and Talansky are really starting to turn into great riders, what is your career goal?
A: I always dreamed of standing on the podium in a grand tour, but if that doesn't work out I would want to win the Amgen Tour of California a few times before I retire.

USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 5

August 26, 2011

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%205/Profile.jpg

The only stage suited for the sprinters,
so look for Jimmy Casper, Taylor Phinney, and Davide Appollonio
to fight for the stage win as the top favourites.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%205/1.jpg

The breakaway is a popular place today with numerous 15-20 rider groups trying to get away. But they are all pulled back throughout the first 35kms.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%205/2.jpg

Finally this 7 man group gets free,
2nd year youngster Richard Ackerman represents EA-Sony.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%205/3.jpg

At the second KoM, which is 50kms from the finish,
the breakaway leads by 7 minutes!

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%205/4.jpg

8 minutes by the sprint point, the peloton isn't chasing at all.
The sprinters are giving their stage away to the breakaway!

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%205/5.jpg

10kms to go, still a 5 minute lead. The breakaway is going to make it!

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%205/6.jpg

Thibault Turpin starts the sprint, Ackerman sits 2nd wheel.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%205/7.jpg

But Richard isn't a sprinter and gets blown out of the water.
But does beat Turpin to take 6th.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%205/8.jpg

American team BMC gets the stage win with Martin Kohler.
The peloton comes through 3'37" later,
but the top of the overall picture goes unchanged.

Q: Lucky day, jumping in on a sucessful breakaway. Lately you have been overshadowed by Licina, do you think you have the same talent as Jimmy?
A: He is developing faster and also in an area where you can see progression, climbing. I'm working hard but it's going to take a while before I hit my potential. So your question is rather unfair, we will see in a few years down the road.

Think you need to figure out what smilies to use.... Why the sad face, while Talansky will be happy to stay in 3rd?

To me it means more of a satisfied face than sad Frown

Frown is concerned/worried, rather than satisfied: Smile

Talansky should do well the rest of the race. Smile
Rest in Peace Wouter Weylandt and Xavi Tondo Sad

USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Stage 6

August 27, 2011

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%206/Profile.jpg

The last mountain stage before the hilly circuit
in the Colorado capital of Denver to finish the tour tomorrow.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%206/1.jpg

We will skip right over the first climb
with the only news being the formation of the morning breakaway.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%206/2.jpg

At the KoM on climb two the breakaway has fallen apart
and are slowly being reeled in by the peloton.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%206/3.jpg

Peterson puts in his attack with 16kms to go.
But the peloton increases the tempo,
and the attack just brings everyone together in one group with 7kms to go.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%206/4.jpg

Then goes the future American superstar Tejay Van Garderen
with 6kms to go, the yellow jersey counters.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%206/5.jpg

The last section of this climb hits percentages around 17%.
Jesús Hernández isn't backing down though
as he tries to bridge the gap with Oliver Zaugg.
Morris Possoni and Andrew Talansky also start
pulling away from the peloton.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%206/6.jpg

Hernández makes the catch with 1200 meters to the line.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/Stage%206/7.jpg

But just didn't have the energy to make the pass,
Kanstantsin Siutsou gets another win.
Van Garderen with a nice ride for 3rd, moving him into 4th overall.
While Talansky loses some time but keeps 3rd overall.

Interview - Andrew Talansky

Q: Siutsou and Hernández rode away from you today, what happened?
A: I had a really bad day, I'm thankful I didn't drop any GC spots and for Kessiakoff for dragging me up the mountain for the majority of the time.
