In my eyes, that's one way too look at it, but you'll have to consider the wage aswell. Two ways to look at how "cheap" race days/points gained have been, are wage/point or wage/race day, which says Alarcon really didn't have too many race days. Di Maggio, with the way PCM11 works, is obviously a steal, and a great, great rider to have on a team, but let's stick to Alarcon. In my opinion, that isn't really a "bad thing." I know the example isn't the very best, but it's the best I can come up with from my team, as both Roux and Alarcon are leaders. Larsson is the third leader, and costs us 4347 Euros for each race day, and 524 Euros for each point he has scored.

I think the examples shows Alarcon isn't really a bargain considering points versus wage, and I think the numbers clearly shows that it's more than possible to buy cheaper riders and get more points in total from those.

Di Maggio though, is a totally different story, but that was my five cents about Alarcon Pfft

For me, I don't think the wage should come into it at all. Wink

You're free to pay whatever you want for riders.

My point is more a reflection of the gap they're opening up at the top of the rankings. Think the headline stat should come into it (a little bit) more when race days being assigned.

Tough though to balance it....

Wage is imo the most important factor, as that is the bottleneck when building a team.

I did some calculations last year, and iirc the "best" riders for Bacardi was Kirchen and Goss, not Ricco. I beleive it is not the same for Aker this year, since Alarcon has been doing so well, but last year he was beaten by Rein Taraamae in the rankings ;-)

That's because he was riding in support of Taraamae most of last season. Pfft

Alarcon qualifies for roughly 1/3 of his teams race days. Probably a bit much for the best climber in the division I think. Pozzo worked out at around 1/5.

The gap in points gained between Alarcon and Pozzo, Valverde and Rujano I think make clear he has too many days currently.

Maybe, but Valverde won the CT with me and only 28 race days. He didn't even win all his races.

It seems the strategy of taking a leader with a high stat but low average works pretty well, as shown by Aker and Venchi with Alarcon and Di Maggio respectively.

I think it's too late for us to hold the 1st position as I guess Rapha Condor will overtake us. But at least 1 goal of the season is reached with Top 5 at the Overall Team Ranking, but don't know about the others as I need take some time to update my teams thread and the results/achievements part.

from another perspective: Alarcon and especially Di Maggio are TOP Class for CT, but definitely not good enough for being stars in PT (2011 - 210th Di Maggio, 134pts. I don´t know if he was already maxed out though.). So they can help to Aker and Venchi to promote, but then must be replaced by riders, who fit better for PT races.

Same stuff with Bianchi and JRB. They´ll have a lot of work to do to rebuild their teams to be competitive in PT next year. And I´m pretty sure both Smowz and Rin are really looking forward to it, as pre season is really exciting part of MG!

Personally I think the best way to do well is to have a lot of mediocre riders. Pfft

I think the season is long enough to reward the teams with lots of depth, as is the case with Rapha, Bianchi and Oz, or teams with ridiculous luck, like mine. Riders like Alarcon cost a lot of money, and hurt the ability of their teams to bring in depth. There is a tradeoff.

After all, this season CT extended to 175 race days per team rather than 150 - but the amount of race days each rider had remained the same.

I didnt really do any huge changes to my team, but Smowz and Rin seemed to figure this out the best. Meanwhile teams like Vespa and Pirelli, with a couple of standout leaders but less depth, are less successful in the team standings.

Didn't really send anyone to those races so not all that surprised by the pathetic points haul Smile

Still got quite a few race days left so don't think Top 10 is out of the question, main problem being that Davis only has the Herald Sun Tour left. Looks like my goal in the American standings should be achieved as well

I don't know if I really need to rebuild my team a lot, I just need to add some stronger riders into it for the ProTour. As my riders at the moment are good to very good helpers..

I may look out for 1-3 classics, mountain, TT riders and sprinters..

I don't know if I really need cobble riders, they take space for just some races and if they are just cobble riders they are for other races a bit useless.
But as I ignored the cobble races for the last 2 seasons, 1st season with LEGO - Capri-Sonne I had some cobble riders, I really would like to see my "new" team at cobble races..
But as it's the PT, I need to ride them but the question is at the front or at the back. Pfft

With Monfort, De la Fuente, Schwab, Lloret, Rabon and Gil I have decent helpers for the classics and mountains. Aramendia and Mazur are good as TTT helpers..
Also I get Libert, Zaini, Moschella and Stauff back.
Stauff should be now a 78SP and could help to setup now a Sprint train for Ciolek as Hochmann gets dropped everytime when a speed bump on the road is coming up next and Stauff still can progress.
Libert has now 76MO and is also a decent helper for mountain stages.
Moschella should have now 77MO now and he just needs the final step..
Zaini is now maxed out and got 79HIL now, so as good as Monfort.

So I just need some PT quality riders, the other question is how much cap space will I have left for the riders I would like to have.

Thats how I feel it is for all CT teams that can promote, they have good helpers (my team as an example, Ratiy and Marzano will be among the best domestiques, Schadlich and Reus great as the same, my talents will also be good domestiques (Bøchman, Østergaard, Preidler, Anacona, Brenes, Zabel, Zepuntke). Or look at Red Bull, they got a team of domestiques.


When it comes to cobble riders I beleive riders that also can do other things are worth it, like Cance (maybe not at his wage), Boonen, Ballan (he won Milan San Remo a season ago) etc. If I promote I feel I got to build a cobble squad, based on having Mapei as a sponsor :-p

A good cobbles rider is good to have, but not necesarilly the way to go as a promoting team imo. Carmeuse put a lot of focus on the cobbles with Cancellara, and they are probably relegating Pfft

The next update is 80% ready. Tour of America is next on my to-do list (but been away all weekend so far) and I might wait for Deutschland Tour to finish aswell - all other races have been added to the rankings file.
