Team D2 Struggles in Stage 2

Team D2 came out as aggressive as they were in Stage #1. Wegelius jumps first and starts the days breakaway. He was able to stay with the lead group all day but much like Colby yesterday did not have the legs in the last Kilometer to stay up front. Tony Colby stayed near the front of the peleton all day. Both Wegelius and Colby finished the race in the same time as the stage winner.

Tony Colby is the teams top ranked in the GC at 22nd but still just +0'32 - all from time bonuses.

Dennis Van Niekirk and David Belda came in with the second pack at +3'49 and Kristen Fajt, Angel Mangel, who made an attack before the last climb but could not keep pace and Idan Iriondo all struggled in with the sprinters at +5'02.

Tony Colby appears to be the best all-around rider of the D2 riders and it looks like he will have to ride at his best and with a home country advantage just to finish in the top 25. The D2 riders need to pick thier spots and try to make the most of the days breakaway attempts. Colby is the only D2 rider who still has reason to try and slug it out in the peleton.

All but Colby have lost timeby now, but at least the team was aggressive again. If they keep being aggressive, I think the team will get something, obviously not a stage win, but at least some top placings in stages.

And go Colby, get that top 20! Smile

The team is going strong, hopefully one of them makes a clean break on the future mountain stages.

That's what I wanted to see from Lewis, attacking early Smile Too bad it didn't work though, but at least he's trying.

So much for that Pfft

Very nice stage and report - this is shaping up to be quite a solid race already.

Marzano stepping up to deliver VW some much needed success

But now he has the race lead, and assuming he keeps it through the TT, that is sure to improve the breakways chances in later stages. Weak support for him really.

Glad to see Belda in the breakaway. D2 team disintegrated on the mountain side, but hopfully more breakaways.
Very interesting fight for GC,nice win for Marzano though Nazaret was blocked

Would've been very nice if Agudelo and Vasquez switched places, both on the stage and on the overall ranking I must admit. But I won't complain, having to riders in the mix for a top 5 overall is great, eventhough Vasquez most likely will loose lots of time in the MTT, as his TT/flat is too weak.

And I really enjoy your reports, Mresuperstar, it feels like you write about all that should be written about, and adds a little bit more aswell, like a great spice to the soup.

Top 40? Pfft

Great victory for Marzano though, very close with Krasnoperov, but he held on nicely. GC fight is looking interesting at the moment.

Osella is doing great so far. Brilliant 4th overall at the moment, although he'll fall down like a rock after the MTT. A shame that he isn't better in TT.

Marzano, Nazaret and Krasnoperov seems to be the strongest. Will be interesting to see how that battle unfolds later in the race.

Nice active stage from Bosisio. I hope he loses just enough time for them to let him go on one stage.

I both hoped and not hoped to take the lead here, as already mentioned the support Marzano will get from my team is weak. Best helper is Pfannberger... So will be interesting to see how this goes, I fear a double attack from Emu

I hope Marzano will be able to do well in the TT, seems like a mountain TT to me? So hopefully he will be among the top 3 there aswell, "free" points Grin I need them, this race might save my hopes for promotion

Bit disappointing for D2, but Belda and Colby attacking is nice. I think points should be awarded for attacks, to encourage good racing - and benefit Team D2. Wink

Team D2 Implodes on Colorado Mountainside

After two relatively good showing on stages 1 & 2, Team D2 tried to ride the Colorado mountains with the CT riders. The pressure was too much for the D2 riders and one by one they imploded.

Angel Mangel who showed some aggressive riding on stage one struggled the worst finishing +14'54. Dennis Van Niekirk who had several good D2 finishes was also left far behind finishing at +14'06. Idan Iriondo wobbled at +12'40. Charles Wegelius tired from his breakaway ride in Stage 2 was able to end up +7'47. Kristian Fajt a solid D2 rouler did not loose the pace until the steep sections of the last climb finishing at +5'47.

Coming into the stage David Belda and Tony Colby were the top 2 riders on the team and again today they exerted that same skill set and confidence. Colby for the 2nd time in 3 stages jumped into the day first breakaway only to be caught. After his breakaway try Colby managed to stay with the peleton until the steeper sections of the final climb, by stage end he was in at +5'28.

David Belda attacked in the day's 2nd breakaway but they were also riden down before the final climb. Belda appeared stronger on the day than Colby and finished at 3'23.

Belda and Colby are still the Team D2 GC leaders.
Tony Colby 36th +6'02
David Belda 45th +7'52
Followed by
Charles Wegelius 53rd +10'01
Kristian Fajt 56th +11'29
With
Idan Iriondo 65th +18'22
Dennis Van Niekirk 66th +18'35
Angel Mangel 67th +20'36

Stage #4 is a 16km ITT which is all uphill. The best Belda and Colby can hope for is that they can claw back 2-3 slots in the GC.
